On the topic of antisemitism and the Western left: One of the reasons that Jews are disappointed in liberal or progressive groups, who we previously considered allies, is because in the face rising antisemitism we are being 'splained on what antisemitism is (or isn't), how we should be feeling, and being gaslit and suggested the we are misinterpreting or exaggerating the behavior of others. It's exhausting.

Folks it's not enough to stand up against the AfD. You need to explicitly stand up for Jews in both word AND action. If you feel uncomfortable doing this openly and publicly, then you know why the garden of the Righteous Among the Nations only has so many trees.

It appears hostage square in Berlin has already been defaced. What can I say, Berlin. If you really want Jews to leave the city then we will eventually have to oblige.

I was 18 during the second intifada and a suicide bomber had just blown themselves and others up at the shawarma place a block away. Luckily my brother, who was heading in that direction, decided at the last minute to grab dinner elsewhere. When I see posters like this in Germany about "globalizing the intifada" (HT @nadav @Watchingyou81) I ask myself, if this came to pass - where would we be safe from violence? Nowhere. That's where.

In case it bears repeating: protesting Netanyahu's government or his cabinet's decisions is NOT antisemitism, nor is it anti-Zionism. Plenty of Zionists, Jews, and Israelis have been protesting his policies before the war. Netanyahu and his messianic government do not have a monopoly over Zionism and conflating his actions with Zionism and protesting his policies in the name of anti-Zionism only serves his political purpose.

Denying Jewish students access to campus? THAT'S antisemitism.

If you force people to fight (for) you, your cause can never be wholly just.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@larsmb Is that a comment in regards to conscription? I was in the military for two years despite fighting the draft feverishly, and eventually convinced myself that it was a type of "tax". But even I can't deny that if the IDF didn't exist - especially as a people's army - neither would Israel. I suppose the situation might be different for countries that don't experience wartime as frequently.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@larsmb I don't know how it is in other countries but in the IDF, combat service is voluntary. Everyone (all genders and communities excluding ultra-orthodox Jews and Muslims) must serve but if you want to serve in a combat unit specifically you must volunteer and, if you are an only child, your parents need to consent.

Jewish students are being barred by protesters from entering buildings at UCLA and the university has instructed the LAPD not to intervene. Having a hard time consolidating these protests as "pro-Palestinian" when they are so simply anti-Israeli and anti-Jewish.

Das muss diese Faulheit der GenZ sein. Sofort Leistungen kürzen 👍

@larsmb Welp if Bird Flu ever becomes infectious from one human to another, the average age will end up dropping to ~40 as only that demographic and below will stay home.

@larsmb I'm terrified of Bird Flu honestly, not only because of how dangerous it is but because of how little of a shit people care about getting themselves or others infected.

This is scary to me. I travel quite a bit for work on an Israeli passport, including to the UK, not to mention my Israeli family who visits me in Europe and hence goes through local border control. We've already mostly stopped speaking Hebrew in public for fear of being harassed but we can't hide our passports at the airport. What now? https://www.ynetnews.com/article/h1zhg0011c

@larsmb (very) Generally speaking, experiences with high complexity and too much choice increase the cognitive load for the user, leading to bad experiences. It's not about reducing choice but providing the -right- level of choice for the core user experience and core user group. if you find it frustrating then possibly the designer did a poor job at understanding user needs, or you're an outlier for the service you're trying to use.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@larsmb That entire screen has a ton of UX issues and problems with the information architecture, my eyes are twitching.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@larsmb At the risk of sounding pedantic, the user group to ultimately target is a business decision and not a design decision since it's more related to resources and impact. I feel like designers often take the blame for product decisions beyond their control.

The conservative death toll count for Gaza stands at over 28.000 (of Gaza's total population of ~2.3 mio) in the past 4 months.

A majority of the population of Gaza has fled their homes, is suffering shortages of food, water and medical services. Many have lived in temporary shelters for months. Of those, 1.5 mio are said to currently shelter in the Rafah area.

Imagining larger scale military operations in that area is disturbing, to say the least.

@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@hko I have no idea if you intended to omit that information. But it’s misleading nonetheless.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@hko but these are the official numbers released by Hamas’ Health Ministry, I’m not making it up. They omit the ~12k militants which are part of that number. It doesn’t sit well with me either but I keep seeing it everywhere.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@hko Hamas is a terror organization which exists for a stated purpose, which is to destroy the state of Israel (see charter). It has attempted to further this by activities that go beyond direct military action, by forming a political party and becoming a pseudo government. Their health ministry is part of this agenda, as is every related group, and is not an independent organization. What they release and how they release information is not independent from the organization’s goals.

lirontocker,
@lirontocker@mastodon.design avatar

@hko I think you’re missing my point, which was that quoting numbers released by Hamas, regardless of how accurate they ultimately are or aren’t, without mentioning at all that it includes a large percentage of militants, makes it appear like they are civilian deaths (which is what Hamas ultimately wants since it itself is not reporting militant deaths).
