I'm reading On Stalin's Team: Years of Living Dangerously in Soviet Politics by Sheila Fitzpatrick, and I think this quote from her foreword contains wisdom applicable to any workplace:

"Both independence and team spirit were high in the early 1930s, and both were much reduced in the late 1930s as a result of the Great Purges."

Remember, guys, micromanagement and sending people to gulags is bad for morale!

What a day to learn that Paul Stamets, the real person after whom the fictional Star Trek character is named, is widely considered the Elon Musk of mycology by experts in the field. The Neil DeGrass Tyson of fungi. Probably a candidate for one of the snake oil salesman episodes of Behind the Bastards, except Robert would have bad opinions about Discovery so let's not.

Since learning to drive and hanging out in car corners of the internet, I've discovered that Americans cherish their right to speed almost as much as they love their guns. Like, to the point of claiming that the right to speed is a social justice issue. IT IS STRANGE AND SCARY and also explains a lot about my time in Detroit.

Tuesday night: I impulsively decided to get Taco Bell for me and my flatmate. She's vegetarian, so I get a chicken burrito for myself and a black bean burrito for her. Go through the drive-through, get home. There's chicken in her bean burrito.

Gotta embed this toot since I can't quote-toot: lotta Australians giving ourselves credit for Melbourne's great public transport, but:

  • there IS parking underneath the whole stadium precinct
  • a lot of people who don't live near stations will drive in, park outside the city and take PT the rest of the way
  • the weak spot in Melbourne's PT is buses, so a lot of people drove to train stations or took a bus planning to Uber home after the show
  • but also, how many private jet trips are balanced out by roughly 90K people taking public transport, asking for a friend

Post Superbowl, my TikTok feed is dominated by Australian women who watched it for the first time for Taylor Swift reasons, all going, "Soooooooooooo this is NRL but shit and the players wear pantaloons? This is the Worst Football!" And at first it was amusing, but by the fourth video it was the funniest thing I had seen in days.
