lunarul,

I don’t think anyone without color blindness would say any two colors on that drawing are the same color.

lunarul,

Those are two different people though. One thought or Terry Pratchett, the other of Douglas Adams.

lunarul,

Doesn’t the layout get designed and approved in some DTP software where it looks perfectly fine because it’s all 2D?

lunarul, (edited )

See Rich Cook’s Wizardry series. It’s about software engineers transported to a fantasy world and they start approaching magic as software. They create complex spells out of lots of smaller spells, they even create a debugger demon.

lunarul,

Fun fact: orcas are not whales. The name “killer whale” is a reversal of their previous name, “whale killers”. They’re just mean dolphins.

lunarul,

I really meant badass, but they can definitely be mean. All intelligent animals have a mean side.

So an extension of the x * 5 = x/2 * 10 shortcut

lunarul,

I like that there’s a name for it. I always try to do that if possible. Division by 25? You mean multiply by 4 and divide by 100. Convert miles to km? That’s x + x/2 + x/10.

Not sure if qualify as old geezer, you never know on the internet. I’m old for most people here, but you mention Excel, so you sound closer to my age :)

In a 2018 review, data from 12 studies (8,003 participants) showed acupuncture was more effective than no treatment for back or neck pain, and data from 10 studies (1,963 participants) showed acupuncture was more effective than sham acupuncture. The pain-relieving effect of acupuncture was comparable to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

lunarul,

That’s why wikipedia feel sluggish sometimes

Images on articles are resized. The original size of the image has no bearing on how fast the article loads.

lunarul,

The internet just allows people to find others sharing the same kind of weird. Which is both great and awful at the same time.

lunarul,

No, cats are the other way around. You’re just a human who lives in their house.

lunarul,

circa 1750 BCE

here in Ur

Wow, I never really thought about how long Ur has stood. The city was already 2000 years old in 1750 BCE

lunarul,

Tech Leads and Staff+ Engineers are still IC roles. If you’re not managing people, then you’re not in a manager role.

How do you store your grounded coffee? (slrpnk.net)

Hiya, just quickly wondering how people store their coffee? Mine is in a tin box I got second hand, cos I thought it looked nice. Any rules regarding storing grounded coffee? I don’t store much at the time, it’s just if I grind a little too much and what not. I’m assuming the general thumb rule for this is to store it in a...

lunarul,

I have a similar grinder, paid less than $20 for it, works great. I’ve been using it daily since 2019.

Unfortunately it’s not on Amazon anymore. I found it on eBay, but with a single 1 star review: www.ebay.com/itm/124212737537

How is Monkey Island missing from the list? Those games were the peak of SCUMM.

lunarul, (edited )

Add one more here. Some of the greatest games came out in that period.

I made before a list of the top 10 games that impacted me the most and a large part are from that period. In no particular order:

  • Worms (particularly Worms World Party)
  • The Settlers II
  • Master of Orion II
  • Heroes of Might and Magic (particularly the first 3)
  • Phantasmagoria
  • WWF WrestleMania
  • Little Big Adventure
  • Monkey Island (especially 1-3)
  • Dizzy (all games in the series)
  • Jet Set Willy
lunarul,

I didn’t have any consoles, so couldn’t play a lot of those games. But on PC (and on 8-bit computer before that), I played hundreds of games. There were no copyright laws in my country when I was a kid and my dad got everything he could get his hands on. In the 8-bit era he collected over 40 cassette tapes (8-10 games on each). Then when we got the PC there were boxes and boxes of floppy disks (I remember Need for Speed was on over 30 disks). Then CDs came out and I remember one CD that had 200 games on it. And as my dad collected, I tried every single one of them.

That just goes to show the sheer amount of quality gaming that there was.

I made that top 10 list years ago from some silly Facebook game that was going around at the time. The hardest part was picking just 10. My initial list had about 70 games on it.

lunarul,

Yeah, I remember when I first got ZSNES and suddenly I had access hundreds of games I wasn’t able to play before. Played through Super Mario RPG, spent so much time in Harvest Moon, and finally played the first Final Fantasy games and Legend of Zelda.

lunarul,

I like how you and FQQD each censored the other’s name in your posts.

lunarul,

What’s wrong with the 80s one? I loved that show

lunarul,

has a lotnof stuff cut out

I was surprised, because in my memory the show ran for years and was very slow paced. So I looked it up, and it seems I was thinking of a different series (Kung Fu, 1972)

lunarul, (edited )

No it doesn’t. He could have his name show up 100 times in the documents, 30 of which are misspelled. The 30 misspelled occurrences would show 14 unique spelling variations.

Edit: I see what you mean now. He spelled his name in 15 different ways if he misspelled it in 14 ways (unless he never spelled it right)

lunarul,

Yes, but 15 spelling variations doesn’t mean the name wad spelled 15 times in total (as the comment I replied to says), because each variation can be used multiple times.

Ok, I now see the discrepancy in the article (“misspelled 14 different ways” and “spelled 14 different ways”). I was confused by the commenter’s phrasing (“spelled 15 times in total”)

lunarul,

How are crashlytics and firebase analytics profiting off of users? I cannot imagine not including those in an app you’re actually hoping to improve.
