If purchasing isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing (fosstodon.org)
I am ashamed that I hadn’t reasoned this through given all the rubbish digital services have pulled with “purchases” being lies.
Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
I think I’ve settled on the latter. Disagreement is maybe best communicated by the absence of an upvote? And downvotes work best when they signal something that is just off base, and while not reportable, is not appreciated at a broad cultural level.
How Many Star Trek Episodes Pass the Bechdel Test? (TOS to ENT) | The Mary Sue (www.themarysue.com)
I found this after reading and responding to this post here about early Trek fans’ prejudicial negative reaction to TNG. One of my responses (see here) was to point out that any fans of the progressiveness of Trek ought to have been mindful of the room for improvement over TOS, with female representation being an obvious...
Omegle has shutdown with a thoughtful farewell from the founder (www.omegle.com)
Failed replication of claimed superconductor reported on arxiv (arxiv.org)
Can any music experts explain to me why the TNG theme is so good?
There’s something about the TNG theme (played during the opening credits) that seems unique and special to my ear. But I don’t know about music and orchestral production to make sense of it....
Ok, as a user on lemmy.ml, I'm pretty sure none, or close to, of my posts and comments are being federated.
I've been monitoring, checking whether my posts or comments appear on external instances, including mastodon, and it doesn't seem to be happening....
Is decentralised federated social media over engineered?

Would you say Apple is in a slump?
With the VisionPro hype already dead (maybe forever?), bad or tasteless iPad ads, purposeless updates to iPad, Apple dropping their car project, and reaching out to OpenAI or Google for AI services … it certainly feels like it to me. They’ve at least run into their limitations recently however much they want to find the...
Foundation’s showrunner explains why big book adaptations start so dang slow (www.theverge.com)
Why FRINGE is Scifi's Forgotten MASTERPIECE! 🧬 (www.youtube.com)
Huuuge deep dive on the show and awesome nostalgia fest for lovers of this (probably underrated) show!
The Worst Product I've Ever Reviewed... For Now (www.youtube.com)
Oooff … I don’t think it’s like MKBHD to come down so hard on a product. But this thing seemed weird (and probably dumb) when it was launched and so I guess this lines up....
Community Boundaries and the All feed
It recently struck me recently that a number of users mostly scroll the All feed. This came up in a conversation where people were discussing how their main usage of lemmy was to scroll All and then rely entirely on blocking to refine their feed....
How much are link aggregator platforms struggling with the quality of the "general internet"?
It struck me recently that as the quality of content on the internet has arguably gone to shit, in the form of increasingly frequent ads plastered everywhere, paywalls or superficial/dumb blog posts or mainstream media articles, the basic idea of a link aggregator platform can naturally lose its quality, or struggle to maintain...
‘Dune: Messiah’ Greenlit by Warner Bros, 2027 Release Date Eyed — World of Reel (www.worldofreel.com)

Suggestion: An ActivityPub and Lemmy codebase reading club

How resource intensive is the federation part of running a lemmy server?
I ask generally out of curiosity. I was just thinking that as big social media fractures, old school isolated forums might become “cool again”, and that one of the achievements of lemmy might be as a nice platform for simply running a forum for whatever community you want all without needing to worry about federation....
If you’ve heard that people have problems with the head of mastodon (gargron) this recent little incident might be an example. (github.com)
The link is to a GitHub discussion, where gargron shuts down a discussion because he’s made a unilateral decision and then locks the thread to avoid debate....
The creator of Pixelfed announced an upcoming encrypted messenger for the fediverse that will work across the fediverse (mastodon.social)

How well can an employer be certain of a remote employee's geographical location?
FWIW, this isn’t to do with me personally at all, I’m not looking to do anything dodgy here, but this came up as a theoretical question about remote work and geographical security, and I realised I didn’t know enough about this (as an infosec noob)...
Establishing a norm around karma calculations being opt-in across the fediverse
RIght now lemmy doesn’t calculate or display a user’s “karma”. And many think this a good thing (me included)....

Don’t wanna bash on Discovery … but is there notable disengagement around the final season?
I’m personally not watching it (you could call me a bit of a disco “hater” and s4 really kinda bummed me out) … but thought I’d see how people are enjoying it and think about getting a paramount subscription....
