I need the communal brain on this, as my search-fu only seems to be finding SEO-spam and content marketing.

Has anyone written in depth about how data privacy concerns and regulation are contributing to software re-shoring efforts?

I still think about that alternate universe where Disney acquired Twitter.

Linkedin is so weird. It's not a place I feel comfortable in, is it meant to be?

matthew,
@matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

@darrel_miller @ewebber I like the word "preening". The kind of performative professional wonkery resulting in drag-like artifice but with zero % of the fun.

@matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

@darrel_miller @ewebber I actually "unconnected" from someone just this morning on that network. I had worked at a company with them before but over the past week or two they started publishing these hustle-culture confessionals. I'm sure they thought they were being "real" but it was so cringe: Extolling the virtues of 4:30am meditation and journaling, turning a vet's PTSD into "a heartfelt 5:30am gym revelation", etc.

What's worse than the attention sponging are the folks that reward it tho.

@darrel_miller @ewebber I'm guessing that LinkedIn's algorithm is partially to blame, as it knows these sorts of things tend to do well in the feed, so it promotes them, so those looking for clicks and reposts are quick to copy.

But it isn't a closed system. Those things wouldn't be amplified without the people providing "engagement" in the first place.

I'm there because I feel like I have to be. But I'm grumpy about it.

@darrel_miller LOL! Me too. "Am this all I am to you?"

It gets worse. I asked write a LinkedIn bio for me. While the results were professional and truthful, it caused a moment of existential panic - that my entire time online, the causes I promote, and the relationships I seek out and maintain might be summarized as "just another API guy". Maybe it is just my version of a midlife crisis, but that reductionism isn't the legacy I hope people remember me by. Still thinking about it.

I was today years old when I realized I don't think I've ever had a dream with a mobile phone in it. Is this the same for other people?

@darrel_miller as a kid through preteen, were there computers around? Or did those come later?

One of the things really lacking for me in Mastodon is positive feedback for editorial work. I love following people who boost good stuff. On Twitter, a big part of why I "liked" something was to let them know I liked their choice. Here that information is kept from them and that seems a waste to me.

@williampietri If someone stars something I've written it shows up in my notifications. I don't understand - what information is kept from people?

Is it true that with Mastodon/ActivityPub, if you have N followers and you make a post, your home instance has to make N separate HTTP requests to individually notify your followers’ instances about the post? I wonder what thought has been given to scalability — if, say, Barack Obama were to join Mastodon.

@darren @arcanum maybe they're saving that for an expansion between Grand Forks and Winnipeg 😂

Wading into the scads of royalty-free music sites to trying and find some background for a sample project. If anyone has one that they would recommend, I'll all ears.
