By all accounts, 2023 was a banner year. Which makes leaving Substack all the more important to do sooner, rather than later:

"It’s simple, it’s meaningful, it has just three colors. It has no lettering or seal on it and it’s very distinctive, you should be able to make it out at a distance it should be discernible."

"This design accomplishes those things. At the same time, this is the only flag that I know of certainly in common use, that makes use of that shape that echoes the shape of the state of Minnesota."

A good sign for any symbol is just how well it lends itself for reinterpretation. Considering the "Captain Minnesota" memes are already popping off on Reddit, I assume this is a good one, you betcha.

Okay, people. I need a phrase that is kinda the opposite of "Land and Expand" that big consultancies do. We want to emphasize coaching, building capability within the customer organization, acting as a TT Enabling team, etc. Sort of "consulting done right".

(We came up with "Coach and Poach" but obvs that is not exactly a good way of working! 🤣)

@matthewskelton

"SOUR AND EMPOWER!" 😜

A bit more seriously though, I'd be curious what the new year brings. Internally, what we're hearing is that 2024 is most likely to be light on "transformational" or "future forward" contracting. Despite the lessening headwinds, companies still won't be greenlighting these more speculative efforts, opting instead for clear, immediate ROI-driven or tactile (implementation-drive) engagements. I'm curious if that's what you're seeing, as well.

Chrome has started doing this thing where a tab seems to "drop" its contents - it's noted by a little circle with dotted lines on one half. When I click back to the tab, the page then needs to reload.

I assume that it to keep overall memory down, but I find I can't toggle back and forth between references nearly as quickly anymore. Does anyone know if that is a setting I can change somewhere?

@Jeremiah Yeah, DHH is a really polarizing figure. I can't figure out if he's the one that changed since '16, if it's me, or a bit of both.

Regardless, the quote is now quite the self-own.

    What’s the verdict on ?

    matthew,
    @matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

    @bsletten Steep learning curve. Apparently, it is jam packed with callbacks that those who know their Rebels or Clone Wars can enjoy. Without that it seems like a series of pretty but head-scratching moments.

    I mentioned this on a forum and a fan started answering my questions with links - "The color of the lightsabers means this, from this show" or "here's an interview with Filoni explaining that". I was like, "You don't see a problem with this?"

    Plopped down tonight with the teen in the house and they happened to be watching , on Netflix. What a delightful, unique, and madcap animated movie. Some fantastic voice acting. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimona_(film)

    An animated GIF of Nimona's face changing from tranquility to gleeful aggressiveness. The title reads "Metal".

    I just criticized a LinkedIn post and I feel like I committed a mortal sin.

    matthew,
    @matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

    @darrel_miller After seeing that post, I had just opened up my Mastodon client to say, "I live in fear of the day I wake up to find Darrel Miller has commented on one of my posts'. 😀

    But you're right. I've grown hypersensitive to posts that start out reducing decades of emergent practice as a strawman to be easily knocked over by the author's hot take. So frustrating.

    @darrel_miller I think the industry is safe. There wasn't an infographic and an embarrassing lack of emojis to entice algorithmic favor, so the post should have a small sphere of visibility. 😜

    Gable v Gunther

    matthew,
    @matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

    @kerfuffle I love how Gunther is a heel but you have to respect his skills. When he wins it is because it is clean (usually) - he isn't reliant on winning "dirty" or cheating. Last night with the count out was a great wrinkle; he wasn't pinned and keeps the belt, but it also was a win for Gable.

    I'm glad Alpha Academy is past whatever matches against the Vikings, but I hope they still have opps to bring the silly fun even though they're up against more serious opponents.

    The problem ppl often have with Mastodon is it requires you to build something when for the last 13 years a few corporate conglomerates--using a massive shared database of user data via Google--have been doing it for you.

    Or more accurately, have been manipulating your dopamine cycle in bubbles that steer you to their advertisers.

    Fediverse isn't going away at this point, but I do think that most ppl will lack the ability to alter their expectations of social media so they can enjoy it here

    matthew,
    @matthew@opinuendo.com avatar

    @rorystarr I think that was the most important thing I had to understand when people complained about how dead or boring Mastodon was.

    People have the expectation that things just happen - that investing in a network, hunting for interesting people, boosting others - will be done for them. I enjoy that work - I find it rewarding. But it is work, and others bounce off it - hard.
