I’m a composer in love with synthesizers & lyrical melody, an artist fascinated by the interplay of pattern & decay. I work in technology as well, see my alt

I live on the southern coast of the Salish Sea, parent in a nuerospicy household, and otherwise deal with #CPTSD & autoimmune skin conditions

What’s your favorite “Challenging but Fun” album? Something that’s always a bit difficult to listen to and sometimes hesitate to put on, but you’re always glad you did?

Currently listening to “The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth of the Beast” by Matmos, which is very much in this category for me

actually thinking about building my own MIDI controller with an arduino with knobs / lit buttons for a transport controller paired with a Bitwig script

mattly,
@mattly@social.bitwig.community avatar

so I have an Icon Platform Nano (Mackie MCU protocol) and a MidiFighter Twister, and don’t particularly love either. I don’t use the fader or like 2/3ds the stuff on the nano, but the jog wheel & play / record arm are essential, as are buttons mapped to forward/back cue

the MF Twister is cool, but some stuff is better handled by buttons than pushable encoders. I’m thinking I could do an arduino controller with a display

sketch of an idea for a control surface that would replace both these devices for me

I'm at an odd place with my personal website. Before Dec. 2023, it was a "professional portfolio" for my compositions. Now that I'm interested in the IndieWeb community, I want to make something more personal. I don't think I want to make two sites, but I do still need a portfolio for my composition work.

I just read @maggie's post on "digital gardens" and I really like that idea. (1/n)

@reillypascal @maggie I too am trying to figure out what it looks like to move my website from a collection of essays into something more freeform. I started putting up pages for random things & then realized I needed some form of organization. I’m still figuring it out but it’s fun to watch other people go through this as well

Added a cheat sheet for the QuBit Nautilus, whose various chroma/feedback paths/delay modes I had been constantly looking up

mattly,
@mattly@social.bitwig.community avatar

@etherdiver curious what you think about this one, I made some changes to the pen modes in my drawing program with the aim of making the text less dense and easier on the eyes

mattly,
@mattly@social.bitwig.community avatar

@etherdiver I’ve thought about doing this in a page layout program with actual typeset text but it’s a lot more work and the result feels repulsively sterile

It’s kinda fun to just do these on the iPad in a program that lets me mix media a lot easier

perhaps overdue, I’ve finally cleaned up some printable cheat sheets I made for some Eurorack modules & put them on my website

  • MI Marbles
  • MI Tides v2
  • MI Plaits v1.2

I’ll probably make & post more. I’m curious what people think of the format

@etherdiver it’s not a font, it’s handwritten

mattly,
@mattly@social.bitwig.community avatar

@etherdiver my handwriting has evolved over time from my training in architect (aka Tekton) towards a Unicase designed for speed & disambiguation, w/ particulars for writing on low-friction surfaces like whiteboards or ipads

I see your point though, especially on the Marbles & Plaits ones, where things are fairly compact; IDK I may take a stab at redoing one of those with some type

the only Make Noise I have are Maths & Mimeophon, I’ve found both straightforward enough

> Neuromancer should be a period piece, because Cyberpunk is of the past, just as (even modern) industrial music is now properly retconned to be a subclass of "90s synthpop".

The new version of Audio Damage’s FM Percussion synth / neural sequencer Axon is out, I have some presets in. AD’s stuff has worked its way into nearly everything I’ve done, and I’m thinking about how to work this into a track idea for the album I’m working on

The previous track I was working on, which had 12 individual tracks feeding into a giant reverb wash, along with quite a lot of glitchy percussion (linked) was the most technically challenging thing I’ve done
https://social.bitwig.community/@mattly/111837610513452236

The one I’m working on now uses deliberately out-of-control feedback loops and, oof, a whole ‘nother set of technical challenges. I think I got it tho

between the corporate survellience capitalism, the creeping authoritarianism, UAV warfare, plagues, and power grid / infrastructure hacking, i feel like we're living in a timeline ... without any of the awesome kung fu, of course, and an extra helping of all of the crappy tech ...

I’ve got a track on this compilation “Music for Lunar Halflight” coming out next week from Triplicate Records, I’m really happy with all this,

my track on this is also the first taste of the full-length album I’m working on, which so far is a deeply personal work and is, in its way, helping me grow as a person

Announcing our new static site generator! It is coded in Blow but uses the Moist Templating Language to generate pages, except where it uses WriteUp files except where it uses FLAML data files. It also has plugin support and those are written in Turqoise. It's easily installed with just one command in the Flour package manager (but it's like 50 powershell commands to install that if you're one of the few people on the planet who doesn't have it already installed) and you can also use that to install third party plugins. Unfortunately Turqoise installs aren't portable so if you ever have to move dev machines you're SOL, good luck getting all the right versions of everything reinstalled. Really you should just update everything to latest and fix every broken thing on your site every time that happens anyway. Oh and there is no way to alter the extension of the generated files because why would you ever want to put php or asp in a static site? .htm should be fine for everyone

^ every static site generator ever
