meant2live218,

This is real. I saw news about it maybe 1-2 months ago or so. Catan has largely rotated out of my group’s play pool, but I still remember it as the game that kinda got us into resource-based games 20 years ago.

meant2live218,

To be more specific, there are 4 time zones in the contiguous 48 states: Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern. Alaska is also one hour behind Pacific, and Hawaii (usually) one hour behind Alaskan. But Hawaii also doesn’t observe daylight savings time.

This also doesn’t account for how some states (like Arizona) don’t observe DST while Navajo Nation (in Arizona) does, while Hopi land (surrounded by Navajo) doesn’t.

Time is confusing.

Don’t know if these cards will show up in constructed play, but HELL YES GIVE ME MY REDWALL SET!

meant2live218,

Wait, Nate Silver isn’t part of it anymore? Well that ruined any reason for me to pay attention to it.

meant2live218,

You realize that AAA is used to refer to the budget, scale, and expectations of the game, right? And that it’s more of a reboot than a remake, meaning it’s probably not going to be an arcade style game. They’re talking about their aims for the game, and trying to justify charging $60-70 for it beforehand.

meant2live218,

I understand the plight of the union and the fear of instability, but in all honesty the biggest criticism of this move is that it’s basically a conflict of interest for Lyft. It’s mentioned in the article! Lyft wants people to pay up to get a car ride somewhere. Bikeshares encourage people to not get rides from place to place, either cycling directly to a destination or to a public transit stop. And Lyft won’t get more money from bikes than they do from car rides, so they’re basically incentivized to provide a sub-par bikeshare experience to push more Lyfts.

One of my hens came up to me as I stepped outside, but instead of following me around, she leaped at something to my left. She shredded apart a 4-inch long mantis!

meant2live218,

First, I’m glad they found the kid. No one deserves to be manipulated and taken like that.

Second, dude, wtf? He’s in his 30s and thinks that this is something he should do? The kid is literally half his age, and he seems to think that they’re in any position for a genuine romantic relationship? Gross.

meant2live218,

Great game, would highly recommend it to anyone who has fond feelings for JRPGs.

meant2live218,

I didn’t think there was any risk of them leaving, but I’m glad they’re staying where they are.

Plus, I still haven’t gone to see a game at OPACY, so this gives me another 30 years to procrastinate on that.

God of War Creator Is Unhappy With New Games and Kratos' Story (comicbook.com)

Despite being nominated for numerous awards and even winning Game of the Year in 2018, the creator of God of War, David Jaffe, is not a huge fan of the new direction the series has gone in. Jaffe himself hasn't worked on these new God of War games, but thinks that they're not staying true to the spirit of the character and the...

meant2live218,

I understand Jaffe not being happy that the games are going in a different direction than he imagined, but he’s also the guy who thought Drawn to Death needed to be made.

meant2live218,

I think it’s due to lemmy.world defederating from some of the louder instances that I’ve seen way less content of that nature. Not 0 of it, but at least it’s not shouting over the top of every single post I see while browsing the All Communities list.

meant2live218,

This is his punishment for Total Forgiveness, where he had to go up and do a stand up routine. I think the full footage of it is listed as a separate thing from the episode it happened in, though.

meant2live218,

Sorry, that’s my bad. When I see something that looks like a request for information, I try my best to answer it. Even if you personally don’t find it useful, someone else in a similar position but different perspective on learning might be interested. Sorry, hope you have a good day!

He’s saying that if you can change a hard drive, then you can always just keep a spare one (with a clean OS install) on hand to use whenever you take it in for repairs.

Changing a hard drive is basically knowing where the hard drive is, how to access it, and then unplugging and replugging some cables. Fairly easy, and most newer cases have been designed to make it easy to reach the storage bays.

Maybe I’ve forgotten my high school physics, but radio waves and light are still all EMF, right? They’re the exact same thing at different frequencies?

‘It will take years to recover’ from Tuberville blockade, top Navy nominee says (www.politico.com)

President Joe Biden’s nominee to be the Navy’s top officer, Adm. Lisa Franchetti, said it could take the service years to recover from the impacts of Sen. Tommy Tuberville‘s blockade of hundreds of senior military promotions....

meant2live218,

From what I had read somewhere, the holdup is in batching a ton of the promotions into a single voting item. Batching them together requires a unanimous vote, so by voting against it, Tuberville gets to hold the entire process hostage. Promotions can still occur, but each promotion would likely take weeks or months of work and deliberations.

This is why I’m the rules guy in my board game group. I sit down, absorb the rulebook, think about edge cases and check online for answers, simulate a game on my own, and then I get everyone together to sit down and learn the game.

Turns out the ability to hold the rules to like 6 different board games in my head, while not vital for daily life, is a superpower that I intend to fully use.

Ticket to Ride unfortunately did nothing for me.

My friends and I had been playing mostly Catan for about 5 years before we tried Ticket to Ride. It just didn’t feel very strategic, but maybe that’s because it was our first time playing. It felt like the cards you were dealt basically determined whether or not you would win, and “blocking” someone else didn’t feel like it was truly worth the effort. Years later, my CS and EE professor would say how it was a fun game because of how it actually resembled some problems in networking, but I just never grasped that level of depth.

When you use the search in Liftoff, it takes you to pick an instance that you’re searching from. It should hypothetically be a search through all the posts that insurance knows about, meaning everything on the insurance and all instances it is federated with.

In-browser, I know that Lemmy.world allows you to search among your instance’s communities or among all (known, federated) communities. It would be nice if that were an in-app option.

Will always love anything Danny and his team put out.

Do y'all pretend not to notice when the DM fudges something to keep your character alive?

Sometimes I can tell when my current DM fudges a roll to miss an attack or reduce damage. He has a tell in the specific way he pauses and breathes before announcing the roll, then tries to hurry to the next turn, which only seems to happen when someone is in a life-or-death scenario, but “luckily” survives....

meant2live218,

I’m still a pretty new player, but I’m fairly certain that in my group’s second combat encounter, our DM saw that we were going to struggle, so a few rounds before he thought we’d die, he started hinting that people on the street were hearing us. He didn’t play around with his rolls at all, which meant us getting hit by some very powerful (even permanently crippling) critical hits, and some of us rolling awfully on his critical miss table. As we started to go down, one by one, the door was getting battered, and when the crew was down to 1 member alive, the city guard arrived and intervened, scaring the remaining mobs and healing up the three of us on the floor.

To me, it meant that he cared about the dice rolls and wanted consequences and actions to feel real, but also he didn’t want our journey to end on the first night. But he didn’t make the entire encounter feel like a victory, and our characters had to deal with the repercussions of that encounter.
