As a social scientist, I keep getting invites from one of the most prestigious journals in my field for papers from the natural sciences, i.e. concerning the content of some chemical etc. Anyone who has looked at even a single one of my publications, or my profile on any website, or my CV would know immediately there is no way I can review these papers. So what does this tell about the quality of the ? πŸ€”
@academicchatter

mfi,

@academicchatter

Worse, I have contacted the journal several times via e-mail and through their online system to let them know this is not at all my field of research and that I will be happy to review papers in my field. But I keep getting several such natural science requests per month. It's starting to feel quite like spam. I have considered ignoring them, but that would be unfair to the authors who deserve a timely peer review.

mfi,

@David_Gregory @academicchatter
It's double blind peer review. But also, it's one of the most prestigious journals in my field. This is what shocks me. I wouldn't be surprised about this kind of practice in a predatory journal but at this level?

Question for my fellow academics:

How many concurrent projects is a comfortable number for you (i.e., allows you to work without feeling rushed)?

And what is the optimal number of meetings a day (i.e., that allows you to move things along, but also leaves you enough time for other things)?

#AcademicMastodon #Academia @academicchatter

mfi,

@JoranJongerling @mengel @academicchatter

Optimal number of meetings per day: 0 πŸ˜‰

I think there is no universal answer to your question. It depends on what you are working on, what your tasks and responsibilities are, how much you depend on others' inputs for your work etc.

mfi,

@JoranJongerling @mengel @academicchatter

I.e., I am in the final stage of my PhD where I am writing everything up. I do this alone, so except for occasional meetings with my supervisor, all other meetings just keep me from getting my work done.

However, I have also been responsible for the admin of a research project. There, I depended on others to work with me and regular meetings were saving me a lot of time in e-mail communication.

Do you collect bloopers from your #PhD / #research project?

I just tried to google a paper via its #DOI and google helpfully offered this:

Sometimes the trivial questions are the most tricky ones. I'm looking for a reference to a short, citable definition of "" (as in social actor). Any ideas?

Very proud to share my newly published paper on πŸ₯³ We used () to determine which conditions explain latent, collaborative, or escalated dynamics in (and how to get people to work together more often in these conflicts). It's the centerpiece of my PhD project. Feels amazing to have this milestone finished 😊

Good to know there are databases that collect newspaper articles! I will try to find out if something similar exists in Germany.

mfi,

Thanks so much everyone for the advice! To summarize the central points (in case others have the same questions): There are databases that collect newspaper articles for different regions, accessible through university and/or public libraries. This legally circumnavigates paywalls & makes searching/downloading articles easier than individual searches on newspapers websites, for which it is advisable to get papers' consent first.

So my timeline has become a bit of a downer because it's full with depressing content about the climate crisis and how poltics fails to adress it. I don't want to unfollow because it's so important. But it would be nice if it was mixed with other topics from time to time, or just with something uplifting/fun.

So: Any suggestion who to follow for interesting/fun/trivial content? Cool maps, nerdy facts, photo projects, memes, you name it?

@academicchatter @linguisticsmemes @academiamemes

Thanks so much everyone! I have received so many suggestions for humorous, interesting, trivial and nonsensical content, it's amazing! Now following a bunch of them, excited to try my new timeline.

(Also, is this the way to reply to everyone who replyed to my initial post? Still learning)

mfi,

@melle
After a week of testing it, I can confidently say it is still usable, and so much more diverse in terms of topics. πŸ‘
