Interesting story of Etak and in-car navigation.

https://maphappenings.com/2024/04/11/story-of-etak/

I worked at Etak in the 90’s, just before the internet took off. We were a remote office, making a “business intelligence" application that leveraged Etak's maps with 3rd party business data. I wrote a visual basic frontend, another guy designed spatial db queries, and others worked on geocoding. At one point a couple of us experimented with an online map search, a friend wrote some frontend web code and I made an api into the VB spatial engine. We showed it to a few folks, but there really wasn't any interest “why would you use the internet for this? how do you make money?”
The three of us eventually joined a startup of former Etak folks making online maps, driving directions, and business finders (which eventually got sold to MS).
I'd always thought the company name was someone's wife's name spelled backwards. 🙃
Also, the one and only time I worked (albeit indirectly) for Rupert Murdoch. 🙄

@jerzone The Weather Company has flight planning tools that help pilots choose a route in three dimensions, modeling the weather for the path at the time of the flight. it’s pretty amazing to see.

Ephemeral ice texture from back in March. I'm used to finding ice with crystalline patterns but this looks so much like veins and skin texture.

as I get older, I find myself doing certain things more deliberately that I used to do without any forethought. Like picking things up.

mikesusz,

I have joked that, depending on my current state, picking up an object that has fallen becomes a project management process:
first, let’s identify all possible outcomes – perhaps this thing is better on the floor?

Went to fill the espresso grinder last night and one thing led to another. You know, take the top plastic off to clean accumulated oils, which exposes burr area rimmed with over a decade of caked on oils and grounds, and before I knew it the whole top mechanism is disassembled on kitchen counter with parts soaking in hot soapy water.
Essentially this thing is a giant motor thinly covered in stainless steel with grinder and bean holder parked on top. A friend gave it to me over ten years ago when he upgraded (!) and it hasn't skipped a beat since. My espresso machine, from the same company, is getting close to its 20th birthday. Solid built units.

the “burr” grinder blades

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone looks like yours is a flat burr grinder, and i’m wondering if i made the wrong choice (or another ‘upgrade’ is in my future) i recently moved to a baratza virtuoso+ conical, and while baratza sells repair parts (big reason i switched to this one) it still becomes less and less effective as the burr dulls.

looking at your pictures, i could take my tiny chainsaw tooth sharpening file to the edges of those burr teeth and make it last a zillion years :)

snow turned to freezing rain and ice accumulation. 2,151 households in my town without power. (71%). i’d rather have just snow like they’re getting up north.

Eleven years ago, after getting back into mt biking for a couple years, I decided to buy a new MTB. Compared to the 13+ year old 26” hardtail the full suspension 29’er was like cheating (totally appreciated cheating).
I told my wife, “Now that I’m 53 this will probably be the last bike I'll buy”.
There's been a few new mtb and fat bikes since then. 😉
Just bought my first gravel bike today. It's not that I’m going to stop mt biking, but I'm interested in exploring, maybe some bike packing, but certainly long meandering rides on gravel roads and woods trails in and .

Anyone know of esoteric/cool transit related things for the teen to check out in NYC? He's been pouring over Atlas Obscura and found a few so far.

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone i don’t think you can pass through the abandoned city hall station anymore without being a scofflaw. but that would be quite cool.

Apple maps on the mac ticks me off for a variety of reasons (primarily that mouse scroll doesn't zoom), but the real head scratcher is that no matter where I navigate the map to in the US, if I do a “nearby hotels" it jumps to Boston. I have to go through extra hoops to fabricate a specific search term combo for the area I'm at to get it working.

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone i, too, am still trying to figure out the magical incantation to make it do that also. like “search within the visible bounds”

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone wait i may have figured it out! not ‘here’ but ‘there’

Winter in our house includes figuring out what the ladybugs are doing. They sneak inside late fall, somehow, and the reminder of winter will find them doing ladybug things like circling the rim of a water glass for a few hours or dropping into your latte just as you finish making it.
Here we find an odd pyramid of plastic bottle caps with a ladybug on the third tier. The day before it was on the first tier. Did it really spend twenty four hours scaling bottle caps? Will it summit??

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone also cats seem useless to help us deal with the ladybug plague. i’ve seen my cats try to eat them and become instantly and deeply offended. i guess they taste bad.

You know that part in the earlier post where I said at least it's snow? Hahahahahahaha....

Well, it’s deeper than expected in spots, probably from drifting. And man oh man is it soggy. Like, the kind of stuff you'll throw your back out trying to shovel or shear the pins off your snowblower. Footprints fill with water immediately.

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@jerzone i shoveled my driveway yesterday just as it was rising above freezing. snow was super heavy but not yet saturated/slush. i probably could have just left it to melt today but i tend to err on the side of action.

Anyone got tips on a -ray player or external drive? Turns out some films we'd like to access are cheaper as Blu-ray discs than via streaming services.

mikesusz,
@mikesusz@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw i don’t know if they do the same over there, but a lot of public libraries in the US have discs to lend
