UPDATE: Finished the book and would highly recommend this fascinating history of Psychedelics in America. So many parallels to today...this NYT review sums it up better than I can if you want to know more.
It's kind of amazing how much people disparage work that's really intentionally about helping people. I don't even think people know they're doing it. Even when people emphasize the care aspect it's almost always at the cost of acting like you're less intelligent
@grimalkina so you're speaking here about the perceptions of scientists by others rather than how the scientists perceive themselves, yes? Interesting, because I don't think I've ever examined my own assumptions on the matter. When I think about it, I suppose my default assumption is that everyone in a given specialty must have a combination of personality and ability traits that match the needs of that field, but that the specifics can't be predicted (and make a lovely topic for conversation)
@paninid I recently listened to an episode of the superb Empire podcast that covered this moment, which led to the end of the EIC and start of the imperial Raj proper. Many of the iconic stories of this era turn out to be apocryphal but def seems like the belief they were going to be made to use pig grease was the flash point for the rebelling troops; it was linked to a current rumor or belief that the (increasingly evangelical) British were going to start forcible religious conversions.
just learned that it's illegal for people who live in Oregon and New Jersey to write their own posts and that they have to wait for an internet attendant to do it for them
Will future scholars of the Grateful Dead look upon post-Jerry incarnations with the same reverence and analysis as is done for the classic era? If not, what is the demarcation for exclusion? Jerry? Original music? Level of sincerity/authenticity? Not looking for a Mayer bash, genuinely curious as to what and how different eras of the conceptual through line make the cut for obsession > scholarship.
@spacefuzz depends on whether you mean the sociology or the music. From a sociological standpoint it's a continuum. I don't know about reverence but it's certainly interesting. Musically I think with few exceptions there's much less to engage with in detail. Don't have time to expand on it today but will catch up more tomorrow
@chopaganda@richkny batteries are expensive enough I think that makes sense, plus at some point wrangling all the different chargers becomes annoying. I do have different brands for yard and construction work
If it’s not preventing him from running or landing him in jail, I don’t want to hear about Trump’s convictions. Like I don’t give a flying fuq! What an annoying day seeing people celebrate like it’s the Super Bowl. It’s only going to further embolden his supporters. He won’t lose a single vote over it and might even gain a bunch. Meanwhile Biden continues to lose supporters over Gaza. This is all so stupid. (1/2)
