@mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo

I build guitars and make music about monsters and spooky creeps. Kind of goth, kind of western.

I'm migrating from https://‪musicians.today/@mykie‬ and my old posts can be viewed there.

    @chris that is absurdly loud. How much longer is it supposed to last?

    @chris how big that building? must be huge

    Are there any modern browsers that can replicate that cozy feeling of way too many toolbars like we had back on IE 6? Where you only had a tiny little space to actually browse websites.

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @gilesdring 😆true. The toolbars don't feel as bad to me though. Don't know if that's just the passage of timing softening it or if the toolbars weren't as bad since they didn't jitter and jank around all over the place when you tried to interact with a website.

    Nothing like the good old days when a family member asked for computer help and the first thing you saw was the toolbar stack.

    On Friday I sat the whole band down and did something I should have done a long time ago. I had us all listen to all of my demos and rate them 1-5 at the same time. 1 being “I don’t want to work on this one” and 5 being “can’t wait to finish this one”. Told them I wouldn’t feel bad or question their reasoning. We had far more 5s than I expected and everybody left feeling like we had a powerful and positive future. And I have a ton of work ahead of me to finish these things.

    Decided today that I wanted to write and record a single for a near-ish release so that I can have the satisfaction of actually completing something. Too many big projects at once makes for slow going.

    Ended up with something much more dramatic than I expected and it's already got a good sound and direction.

    Last boost: friend of mine has a whole slew of images where he photoshopped presidents holding food for some reason. This masterpiece lives rent free in my head: https://formerpresidentsholdingfood.com/posts/33/

    Decided I’m going to save up some money and finally stop dreaming and get myself a White Falcon

    So I saved up to buy a new guitar amp, but bought a Tone Master Pro instead. One of the cool things is that you can assign control groups to the foot switches and then give them a label that displays on the board above each switch.

    So I got:
    Slap (slapback delay timing)
    Drip (spring reverb mix amount)
    Sketty (fuzz + tremolo, like a spaghetti western)

    Experiencing some data loss that’s resulted in the loss of four novels, a big stack of art, and some songs. I’m going through the stages of grief and I’m astounded at the feelings I’m having. Don’t trust yourself to automate your backups. Make a manual backup right now.

    I’ve recovered the first draft of three out of four novels, final renderings of most of the art, but none of the song demos. I’m very heartbroken.

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @composergreg Thank you. The novels will probably be better for it. I’m thankful to have been able to recover a draft from my favorite, which I intend to publish. The one that’s a total loss was my wife’s favorite. But it’ll be much improved when I rewrite it, since I only remember the good parts.

    There are two things that I often tell people: you can’t help what can’t be helped, and every mistake is a lesson.

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @DismalManorGang @composergreg My goal this week is to come up with a better backup system. I’ve long joked with my neighbor (down the street) about hosting a backup for each other. I think I might see that through, finally.

    Inspired by @m2m , I started making changes to the ways I present myself on my website and the internet in general. So, I have a new bio on Mastodon, and new wording on my website’s home page. It’ll be a long process, but is good

    @michal_zelazny I think the main reason I didn't stick to the forum was because I kept forgetting about it. I do my internet socializing through my phone these days, and forums don't seem to be well suited to phone use. I have fond memories of forums, but I'm no longer the same person, I guess.

    I did a cover of one of @jessica's songs as a gift. I was asked if it could be included on Jessica B Kelly and the Void Conspiracy's charity album. It's some of my best work.

    Please consider picking up this EP ($3) in support of One Voice Chorus.

    You can listen on the Void's peer tube here ahead of release:

    And you can pre-order the charity EP on Bandcamp here:

    Bonk and Bass is THE look for 2024.

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @mxtthxw oh I've got a Steinberger tip for you I probably should have remembered sooner. Always keep a phillips screwdriver near it (like the case) so that you can tune it when the knobs get crazy stiff. (I probably just need to lubricate)

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @mxtthxw my D string will get stiff if it hasn't been tuned for a month (which is easy to do with the stable tuning 😁). I'll have had it 20 years come February and it's never gotten more stiff or more loose. But I think that kind of consistency is worth the slight inconvenience of a stiff knob

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @mxtthxw only time I ever have to tune it is when the weather changes. I live in a dry climate that gets very hot and very cold. Depending on your climate you might be lucky enough to tune even less

    Ergh what an ugly bass guitar....

    I'll take it!

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @mxtthxw I’ve got a five string bass. It’s the XZ-2 model they used to make about 20 years ago that’s a little more traditional. Fantastic instrument.

    mykie,
    @mykie@haunt.graveyard.boo avatar

    @mxtthxw Gibson seems to only release the same guitar over and over. Fender seems to do a little bit more with theirs, but nothing too crazy. I'm not really sure who's doing modern stuff since I prefer a big body Gretsch which are pretty much grandpa guitars 😆

    I'm excited for you to sink your teeth into that new bass

    Howdy and happy . At this point last year I began to form ideas for a new album. My goal was “more goth, more western” and the result was my most recent release, “Walk the Earth”. You can find it on Bandcamp or any of the major streaming platforms.

    For those who would like a copy but don’t want to feed any money into Bandcamp, I set it to a zero dollar minimum. Feel free to help yourself to a free copy.

    As always, your listens mean a lot to me, thanks.
