Experiencing some data loss that’s resulted in the loss of four novels, a big stack of art, and some songs. I’m going through the stages of grief and I’m astounded at the feelings I’m having. Don’t trust yourself to automate your backups. Make a manual backup right now.

I’ve recovered the first draft of three out of four novels, final renderings of most of the art, but none of the song demos. I’m very heartbroken.

@mykie Oof, that’s devastating. I’m backing stuff up right now.

composergreg,

@mykie

I'm so so so sorry. Unspeakably awful.

I experienced a similar loss last year and have still not recovered. But in time I was also able to see it as a chance to start again with new eyes.

Even as you grieve I hope you realize you grew from what you created and nothing can take that away. :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@composergreg Thank you. The novels will probably be better for it. I’m thankful to have been able to recover a draft from my favorite, which I intend to publish. The one that’s a total loss was my wife’s favorite. But it’ll be much improved when I rewrite it, since I only remember the good parts.

There are two things that I often tell people: you can’t help what can’t be helped, and every mistake is a lesson.

@mykie @composergreg Arq Backup for MacOs and Windows. Local and network backups. We use TrueNAS Mini for local NAS storage. 2 actually, first replicates to second. 3 copies locally and one offsite. Also local usb backup.

TruNAS set up for RAiDZ2 dual redundancy. Is Arq spool volume. Also a TimeMachine spool. And photos and audio stores.

Have replaced disks in the older machine. Drives last 5ish years so when, not if. System rebuilds failed volume on the replacement.

@DismalManorGang @composergreg My goal this week is to come up with a better backup system. I’ve long joked with my neighbor (down the street) about hosting a backup for each other. I think I might see that through, finally.

@mykie @composergreg TrueNAS makes that trivial! Other than IP addresss. Your server replicates to his. Https://ixsystems.com/

We have a home brew and a mini+ here at dismal manor.

@DismalManorGang @mykie @composergreg sync is not a backup. If your files go corrupt for some reason or get deleted, that will sync as well. By the time you find out, it could be too late.
You need a true backup, that allows you to go back in time if things go wrong.
Check out Duplicati. I've been using it for a while now, and I used it to recover accidentally deleted files.

A cloud backup like Backblaze is also good. If you have the storage, you can have Duplicati sync to offsite storage to.

@DismalManorGang @mykie @composergreg I follow the rule of 3 for backups btw.

It's also called the 3-2-1 rule.
3 copies
2 different media
1 off site backup

Ps: sucks to hear you lost so much of your creative works. Those are the worst to lose, together with memories like photos.
Other stuff you can find or download again, but not that.

@n3wjack @mykie @composergreg

The catch in all this is that the system has to detect the corruption before the last good copy is overwritten

That’s why the backups are on ZFS with checksummed data and metadata at the file system in addition to the disk’s error correction.

ZFS is scrubbed periodically to confirm data integrity and periodic snapshots taken. These serve as recovery points.

The TrueNAS FreeBSD used also keeps boot volume snapshots (boot environments).

@DismalManorGang @mykie @composergreg True. Duplicati has a smart backup retention setting. It keeps at least a copy of that's a week old, a month old and a year old. When I check my restore options now, I have multiple checkpoints where changes happened, so that's reasonable for me.
