It’s been 5 months since we finally both got to Chicago. Oh how I love being in a city again. One thing I had missed was good public transit. There was virtually no public transit to speak of where we were in Florida and we had to drive everywhere. Here our car only goes to our family visits deep in the summer and we’ve been taking the CTA, Metra and Pace everywhere else. It’s been great. Cheap, no stress of traffic and gets us where we need. I so missed that.

What was the cheapest price you remember paying for gas? I’ll go first. I remember 78¢/gallon.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@Ronnie $0.95 or so in Chicago in the late 90s

This article is a great reminder for many of us. I know perfectionism is one of my worst enemies and I don't think I'm alone in that: https://branch.climateaction.tech/issues/issue-8/the-perfect-site-doesnt-exist/

We're making up for the great weather yesterday with a rainy morning today. Thankfully this should mean the construction work will be a lot quieter today.

Thought experiment: what do you think would happen to our systems, political and otherwise, if unlimited free energy was real and accessible to everyone independently. Would governments collapse? Would it create world peace? Would it be a net positive or a net negative?

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@johnstonphilip look at @pluralistic ‘s first book on Disney. I think that is probably about right.

Wow, if you hop on a Mullvad vpn endpoint that exits in Switzerland, the YouTube ads are WAAAAAY more entertaining. 👀

I really dislike social media during presidential election years. We're not even half way through 2024 and it's already gotten so weird and exhausting.

chris,

@bryanruby I am using ivory for the fediverse and the filters helps with this so very much. I have over 200 of them

So many have been saying this for so long and it all falls on deaf ears but the premise is still correct: FOSS is in danger because no one wants to pay for anything. https://thenewstack.io/open-source-is-at-a-crossroads/

My Apple Watch says the noise in my office, from the construction at my window, is 135 dB right now. Thank god for noise cancelling headphones but, even with those, I think we're going to find somewhere to escape to this afternoon.

The drilling outside my office window is getting REALLY annoying and I really don't want to have to work from Starbucks again all afternoon :/

Oh nice! Quicken added support for the Euro in their latest update. Iv'e been using Quicken since the 90s. Every time I switch something always brings me back a few months later. While I don't need the new feature today, it very well might come in handy in the future.

I haven't dug deep into its functionality yet, but I'm really excited, so far, about the new Sonos app. Here's why. https://chriswiegman.com/2024/05/the-new-sonos-app-is-a-welcome-upgrade/

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@lhengstmengel Thankfully I've already uploaded my local music o Apple Music and the new app seems fine with all of it.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@lhengstmengel Oye. I guess I'm really lucky then. For a host of reasons I switched to Apple Music a while back and uploaded my MP3 collection just to it (I had about 1,500 CDs I ripped to get the collection). For that use it's a win, especially with the ability to control it from my Linux machine. For the rest... here's to hoping they fill in some of the holes they dug.

The movie "Top Gun" has always been a favorite of mine. It was one of the first movies I saw in the theatre as a child and it was largely responsible for a path that eventually saw me working as an airline captain On merit it is a horrible movie in so many ways but I didn't know that as a kid. Now I just consider it one of those “guilty pleasure" movies.

What is a horribly movie that you can just watch over and over?

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@SnerkRabbledauber Oh yeah. That's another one that so bad it's great! Now I want to watch it agian!

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@tezoatlipoca Not sure I've seen either... I'll have to fix that.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@stirrell42 Ha! The great thing about bad movies we like in 2024 is that we don't need to go to the rental counter with them anymore!

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@Octale Oh wow! That’s pretty awesome. It was the first movie my parents bought on VHS when they bought their first player

For the folks: What am I missing?

I'm trying to save a web app in Epiphany in Ubuntu 24.04. (Epihpany and Gnome 46). I've tried both the Flatpak and Snap versions of the browser and nothing happens. It simply never creates the app. No errors, no nothing. Looked for bugs on it but didn't see anything reported. Anyone else seen this?

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@charadon hmm. Had someone else say they could do it (https://mamot.fr/@gnomelibre/112401748258800100) though I did suspect this was the issue.

chris,
@chris@mastodon.chriswiegman.com avatar

@gnomelibre @hirozed interesting. Thank you.

I think what saddens me most about the growing number of takes like this is the gaslighting by the "community" which insists everything is awesome. What is worse is the "if you don't like it, fix it" garbage from the same people. WordPress, as a project, has never been good about taking contributions that don't align with the goals of a very few. Today's WP is no different. You cannot fix this by contributing to a project that doesn't want your contribution. https://dbushell.com/2024/05/07/modern-wordpress-themes-yikes/

@joshuaiz HA! Happy to help if I can. A better spot than me, though, might be to join our headless Discord channel. Lots of folks helping run a wide array of projects on Atlas and elsewhere. https://discord.gg/J2khkF9XYK
