I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@sundogplanets I’m reminded of the $400 fine for littering that a community in Australia sent to NASA when Skylab reentered in the late 70’s 😁

You know what they say, a frog in chime saves rhyme.

In other words,
a frog in the tube is worth two in the toot.

Ask not for whom the chime tolls,

As a caregiver of two adults with mobility devices, one of the things I love about the county where I live is the abundance of conservation parks with accessibility features.
On the downside, they’re not fully accessible. 😕 1/2

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

Many of the paved paths and boardwalks are not wide enough for two wheelchairs (or a wheelchair and a stroller) to comfortably pass each other. Which means that sometimes I have to disengage one electric wheelchair and manually backup or manoeuvre to the nearest passing area, without losing track of the person with the walker. 🙃 2/2

I had never seen such a plant until I stumbled upon this cluster growing freely next to the sidewalk in an empty lot downtown off North Jefferson Street. Apparently called "Devil's Backbone"

@RiversideBryan they grow easily and are considered invasive, but hummingbirds and other pollinators LOVE them. Our house came with a few of them established in the garden, they have shallow roots so have been easy enough to keep under control.

@masukomi just dropping in to say that I think these are hella clever and I could see them being useful in a library makerspace setting!

When they interlock with each other, do you think it would be rigid enough to work with a wheeled base plate option?
(That would make it easy to bring the supplies between workstations/room)

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi thanks, that definitely makes sense! (more curious musing than active need on my end)

For all those people out there who still claim that we are getting our kids high by giving them Adderall:

I took my dose at 6:30 AM , went back to sleep, just getting up now 10 minutes before nine.

brains are chemically different. Normal brains, get high or focused or whatever. I become slightly more able to find the thing I set down three seconds ago.

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi SAME. It doesn’t wake me up, it means I don’t have to go back to the kitchen five times before I actually bring my coffee to the living room like I wanted to instead of the five other things I did instead.

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@superball there are parts of this that really hit. My situation is a bit different since I emigrated as a kid. So it’s not so much an ancestral thing, but there’s so much that still resonates.

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@superball yeah, it’s something I’ve never been able to really resolve beyond “living in the moment mindfulness” which has always been something of a salve for that moment but never really takes root. And I feel doubly (quadruply?) displaced since the West Germany of my childhood (pre-reunification) and the Rustbelt/Appalachia of my adolescence… also don’t exist anymore in so many meaningful ways. I’ve accepted (more or less) that I’ll be perpetually unmoored. 😌

when I was younger internal consistency was important to me but that is a closed entropic loop; nowadays I try to value the messier and generative inconsistencies that come from being acted upon by external agents

Curious to see how people interpret this pattern. Is the switch on or off?

(I would have done a poll, but apparently you can't have an image and a poll in the same post.)

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman I hate these so so much, and they're often even more confusing switched between an OS light/dark mode.

Apple has a similar issues with the Show/Hide in their apple tv OS. Do they mean that when the button says SHOW that it is actively showing, or does it mean that I need to click the button to show it? Ugh.

I hadn't seen our resident otters in a while, which was giving me a sad. Today, while doing dishes, I looked up and saw two adults and three wee pups!

Apparently Emmett found a missus and started a family! We have an old cattle pond at the north corner of our property and that bank has been Emmett's preferred potty area... as you can see by this picture, he's passing that tradition on to his family :D Potato quality pic through dirty window, but glad I managed to grab the camera in time!

An adult otter in tall grasses rushes back into the pond, just out of frame to the left. It is being followed by its three young pups.

Couldn’t get focus on the nest without encroaching on someone’s campsite, but this one did not mind striking a pose.

Y’ALL

if you aren’t folowing UNITED FARM WORKERS’ @ufwupdates onhere, get on that.

they do social media the way all organizations should: show us what y’all do, don't just tell us.

micro/blogging are tools for writing & publishing. using them to REPORT what mainstream media doesn't, that's the superpower.

every post from UFW is a vignette of their members & their collective work. it’s simple, beautiful & engrossing.

so follow the union César Chávez founded & migrant farm workers built.

@blogdiva Thanks! I followed their content on previous platforms but hadn’t seen them here before your boost. I always made a point of boosting their content around thanksgiving back then to underline what goes into all that stuff on the celebration table.
