🧵 Europeans are subject to something called the Bread Tax. It's when cultures do not adapt to technological progress. European bread goes bad in a day or two, whereas American bread is good for weeks. For this reason, Europeans are forced into dense housing to be near new bread.

nebojsac,

@kot @SwiftOnSecurity Am European, can confirm.

Guard wasp, watching over the yard. Sunny day, wasp chilling, Baywatch vibes. Paid no attention to me.

The tomatoes are flowering on the window sill, but it's still a bit too cold to transplant outside - just a little bit longer!

I still haven't officially left Twitter, as this was supposed to just be a few weeks off it, to see what it's like.

Looks like I won't be going back. My mental health is better, I no longer feel the FOMO and no longer spend hours following drama & outrage on social media.

My feed on Mastodon is just... so much better. No amount of blocking and muting could fix my Twitter feed, so I'm glad I gave this a fair shot!

nebojsac,

@novarac23 Oh for sure, I'll probably leave the account up in case it's useful, but I'll probably try and avoid being logged in.

As long as I'm logged out and my brain needs to go through login, it helps breaks the habit :D

In software companies, not having a huge wall between Business and Dev is a force multiplier.

Unfortunately, Devs tend to enjoy having that wall and usually for good reason.

If you can get Devs chatting with customers you can avoid all sorts of issues with your product...

I am currently thinking about learning new programming language ecosystems and skills.

My current thoughts about #php - can one earn decent money with #php nowadays?

What does the php community say? What learning resources should I check out (for those unaware: I am a professional Rust dev and have >10 years experience in programming - no need for a beginner tutorial).

nebojsac,

@musicmatze

In terms of resources and patterns: https://phptherightway.com/

Frameworks to look at (IMHO, in this order): CakePHP, Symfony, Laravel.

What kind of projects? I'd say whatever floats your boat.

Microservices are a thing in PHP as well (with RabbitMQ or SQS), but seem to be less popular nowadays compared to a few years ago. I'd always start with a Monolith and move to microservices as needed.

nebojsac,

@musicmatze In terms of making money, you can for sure. What 'level' of money is going to depend on the company and project.

There's a lot of PHP outsource sweatshops that don't seem as lucrative (or fun) so maybe avoid those and look for Product companies.

I've been near burnout two times in my life, but I'm doing a lot more hours than I was doing then, and I don't feel close to burnout.

I attribute this to now being able to mostly not stress about the workload: There's a limit to how much I can get done in a day, and that's it.

Everything else will spill over to tomorrow / next week / next month, and I'm done stressing out over it.

nebojsac,

In terms of the hours I'm doing, I've been overdoing it for near a decade now, in perpetuity. I haven't seen an empty project "Backlog" in my life.

I think I have a year or two more in me for this pace. It should fully pay off (it mostly has already) but there's a limit. After that I'll be slowing down to a "9 to 5" rhythm. Hopefully.

nebojsac,

@novarac23 Oh for sure. Just need to promise less to others and myself to start with. One day I'll get better at estimating, but I estimate that's not any time soon :D
