First batch of Eclipse Puzzles is already shipping. If you left a mother's day note, your order got priority.

Thinking about a ~2 week east coast road trip with our 9 & 5yo this summer, what shouldn’t we miss? Cute beach towns? Weird roadside attractions? Cool nature? Great walkable neighborhoods? Restaurants with play areas for kids? Affordable hotels with kids’ clubs or activities? Dedicated gluten free restaurants?

route is from NC to Maine and back

@jenlowe Got to hit up Nervous System 😉. We do also have one of the tallest waterfalls on the east coast

We've released a new puzzle! The Eclipse Puzzle celebrates the total eclipse we got to witness this year. The double sided, reconfigurable cut allows you to assemble it with multiple solutions: the sun, partially eclipsed, or a total eclipse featuring the moon with the corona around it

We have several other puzzles in the works, including owl and Jupiter puzzles, but when Jules got back from viewing the eclipse he insisted on making this puzzle. We thought it would be too late the cash in on eclipse hype, but who cares! We makes things because we're excited about them, not to extract as much money from the world as possible.

...

But please buy this puzzle. We think it's really cool

@lufthans I told you we missed the eclipse hype cycle!

@lufthans the galaxy is definitely one of our more challenging puzzles. This one is more on the familiar side of things for your less adventurous puzzlers interested in a double sided puzzle

There's a lot of obfuscation in scientific papers, especially when it comes to mathematification. A good one is when there is an algorithm with a magic number in it, so they just call it a "variable," and then they're like in all our examples we set this variable to SOME_VALUE. This is because arbitrary numbers are considered bad practice, but if it's a variable we've tuned then it was a scientific process.

nervous_jesse,
@nervous_jesse@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@topher_batty my problem with it is not the magic number. Magic numbers are mostly fine. The problem is that for those less familiar, all variables in an equation have the same weight to the reader. Often these things might be something like a dampening factor. This can be confusing when things are presented in a standard way of here is my equation and then here are what all the terms mean. Rather than here's the core idea of how this works, and here's some stuff we had to add to make it work. Some papers do this well, but I find that's usually the exception

nervous_jesse,
@nervous_jesse@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@topher_batty I will say computer graphics tends to handle it better than other fields in my experience

This was a pleasant surprise! MoMA is giving us a "living artist fee" for displaying our work. This is actually more than they originally paid for the work. Our Kinematics Dress has been part of the permanent collection of the MoMA since 2015 and has been on display multiple times, but this is the first time hearing about this kind of fee, which is a great boon for working artists like us.

And if you'd like you can see our dress on display until July 7 in the exhibit Life Cycles: The Materials of Contemporary Design

Our first Kinematics Dress, a custom fit 3D printed garment made from body data and wearable straight out of the printer. No assembly required.

Using AI to impersonate a human should be illegal. It's like litter. It's illegal to dump waste wherever you want. It should be illegal to dump AI generated junk info wherever you want.

I am planning to build a treehouse using trees from our property. I begin I have felled my first tree!

nervous_jesse,
@nervous_jesse@mathstodon.xyz avatar

However, I am not destined for a career as a lumberjack. I misjudged the lean of the tree and it started falling the wrong way, pinching the blade of my chainsaw. Scary! I have learned that trees are very strong and even connected by less than an inch of material, they will still stand no matter how hard you push on them.

The solution was to ratchet strap it to another tree and tighten it until it fell the way I wanted. I would say don’t try this at home but that exactly what I did.

Over a year ago we created by far our largest work ever. A sculptural work inspired by leaf venation of 224 unique pieces that climbs a 120’ wall in Charlotte, NC

We’ve just posted a write up about the project here:

How much Brandon Sanderson can I read this year before burning out? I just bought 4 of his secret novels and am on book 3 of my re-read of the Stormlight Archive before the next book comes out. I finished re-reading Mistborn last month.

@gregtatum I got burnt out on Sanderson. Jessica backed his first kickstarter and I think I listened to one book.

Sometimes we get emails about puzzles missing pieces, which is stressful. We try to ensure this doesn't happen. Luckily, most of the time it's not actually our fault. But this photo from a customer was a bit of a head scratcher. Can you find the missing piece?

We release 2 new puzzles today with art by David Goodsell. The Neuron puzzle is a watercolor painting of the cross section of an axon. It features an idea we've had for a while but never done: a multi-scale puzzle. We first grew an 8 piece "Amoeba" style puzzle, and then we blew it up and grew puzzles inside each one of those pieces. Each macro piece has a different cut style and features a unique neuron whimsy

David Goodsell is an amazing scientist and artist who has generously released many of his painting creative commons. He uses watercolor to beautifully illustrate the unseen complexities of microscopic biological machinery. His work uses information from atomic structure analysis, electron microscopy, and biochemical analysis to make these illustrations as accurate as possible.

He even has a key to all the proteins and structures featured in the image, which we include with the puzzles
