“Under the shelter of each other, we survive.” -Mike Davis, RIP
Human, curious; designer, usability advocate, oss fangirl; snowboarder, Michigan kid, Motörhead fan. Former Model UN dork. Still a general dork. #nobot#noindex
Commuted to Portland today, to get my hair done. Bowled over that I used to do this EVERY DAY, for work. Here, and in the Bay Area. I think the only ppl wanting a return to work, are folks that can afford to live nearby their workplaces, never themselves expect to go into the office, or have commercial real estate investments.
Today Adobe announced its annual MAX conference would take place in Florida. A US state the NAACP has declared unsafe for Black travelers. 500 employees signed an internal letter, condemning the decision. Some PR lady responded, with a blurb saying they're "(giving money to) local LGBTQIA groups" in recognition of Florida's "challenges." One of the most explicity anti-Black actions I've seen an unrepentant tech industry do, in recent years.
Warning to friends doing DIY house painting: never, EVER use TSP, unless you HAVE to; and, are prepared to fully wash it off.
Finished our guest bath last night. For 5min it was gorgeous. Stunning. Perfect. Then, when peeling off some tape... the paint came with it. All of it, from when we first moved in.
I think I want to make a tee-shirt design based off the OreGUNian logo, and instead do OreBLENDERian. With a hand-blender instead of an AR15 in the lockup.
Saw a smug little kid today, wearing the GUN one; and the absurdity of identity-flair projecting alignment with a tool, let alone a tool for efficient mass murder, is just wack.
For the past couple weeks I've been participating in other peoples user research, on user testing dot com. I gotta say—to all my #ux and #product peeps, y'all gotta experience unmoderated user testing from the user's POV. It is very eye-opening.
AQI outside is 230. Indoors with all the windows closed, it's 119. Grateful I'd thought to replace our central air's filters, last week. Tiring of this seasonal wildfire business. Can we just fix the planet, already?!
Wishing there could be a service whereby you buy an album; get immediate access to its music digitally, and then the record or cd arrives in the mail in a few weeks.
Seriously bummed McDonalds no longer does toys, with Happy Meals. All the marketing around Grimace's birthday has me craving/willing to get a Happy Meal, just for a Grimace toy. 😭 #genxtears
Helloooo #design fediverse! For folks that still do Interaction Design—what are some good/current resources for pattern libraries? For chewy interaction design problems, not for on-boarding or "engagement." /cc @peterme@erinmalone@xian@joytrek@gretared (and anyone else?)
It's making my head spin that its ok for a SCOTUS judge to publish an opinion attempting to discredit a private press entity that wrote of him critically, on a different private press entity that's paywalled. Between Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, rapey guy and handmaid lady, we're long overdue for some clear ethics governance of SCOTUS. Confirmation hearings have devolved into performative PR stunts.
"The templates for worker control that shaped Babbage’s contributions to computing draw on technologies created on the plantation, which were already actively applied to control rebellious workers in industrial factories." A brilliant & timely read, from @Mer__edith
This year The Met Gala and International Workers Day aka #mayday, are happening on the same day. While I doubt many in the fediverse care much about couture—the overlap to me is important, but I'm sad will likely be noted.
Today for the second time this year, I had a local Clackamas County Oregonian say to me, "Y'know [a thing] wouldn't have been a problem, but with all those (air-quote) relief checks showing up for free, nobody wanted to work; so with all the trained workers refusing to work cuz they don't have to, whaddyou expect?"
My public high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has had waiting lists more than twice the size of the student roster, since a few years after I graduated. For many years after, they gave legacy preference. (1/2)
As an aspiring anarchist, I obvs love the notion that whales are rising up against humans that have colonized their oceans. Thing is, it's a lot more complicated; and it's not just boujee billionaires in yachts, that are impacted. Worse: other humans eschewing science have taken to putting spikes on their rudders, which can cause harm to the whales. Scientists hypothesize it's a natural whale behavior of play, and that it'll end, soon. Give a listen (2nd piece). (2/2)
Gobsmacked. One, the fire 8mi from my house is now the SECOND biggest fire priority IN THE COUNTRY. Two, it's not estimated to be extinguished for a full YEAR, because it's a 1900 acre fire in a forrest with 5' of ground duff.
Read the quotes. The exact same logic of "How will I explain this to my kids?" now being used to stigmatize BIPOC inclusive US history and gender studies.
Friends fluent in webdev, frontend frameworks, and a11y: I'm looking for "textbook" examples of websites coded using React components, that are also highly accessible.
Clean semantic HTML, fully keyboard navigable, clear states on interactive things, etc. No "bent to the will of flustered fullstack developers" CSS, JS, or HTML. No bloat.
Recommendations? Client I'm looking to share examples with, is accounting software for labor unions. No pictures, lots of tables, forms, and data. TIA!!!
Why yes, my family does have a ritual of everyone calling each other to dish about the game, post game. We all left A2, but we'll always be Wolverines. #GoBlue
