“Under the shelter of each other, we survive.” -Mike Davis, RIP
Human, curious; designer, usability advocate, oss fangirl; snowboarder, Michigan kid, Motörhead fan. Former Model UN dork. Still a general dork. #nobot#noindex
Today Adobe announced its annual MAX conference would take place in Florida. A US state the NAACP has declared unsafe for Black travelers. 500 employees signed an internal letter, condemning the decision. Some PR lady responded, with a blurb saying they're "(giving money to) local LGBTQIA groups" in recognition of Florida's "challenges." One of the most explicity anti-Black actions I've seen an unrepentant tech industry do, in recent years.
@QasimRashid The West Bank AND the Gaza strip were both designated Palestinian territories by the UN, until (somehow?!) the ICJ ruled in 2004 that 1/3rd of it should be under Israel's control. But, Israel has continued to terrorize it. Which I know you know, but your readers should learn more about the region's particulars. Israel has NEVER honored the 1948 Partition Plan, and has used violence throughout its existence—undermining the UN entirely. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bank
But really, what could go wrong with electing a right wing leader who needs the Presidency to stay out of Prison and has promised vengeance via violence and disenfranchisement against his enemies as a way to appease his right wing supporters?
@dalias@BlackAzizAnansi To take seriously any threat of WWIII, one must understand matters of the world; that America is not the center of the universe, and that Putin is not our friend. That the US military presents zero real threat to the nations with nuclear weapons. That Ukraine is a keystone to blocking Putin, not just some other country we want to do good deeds for.
@dalias I agree with you, but I cannot see most Americans agreeing with that. "We could whup their butts!" I could, instead, see many saying. Even if we could—why do anyone's butts deserve to be whupped? Why is butt-whupping important? Humanity at-large is not The Super Bowl. Yet our society has dumbed-down the realities of sharing this one hunk of a spinning planet, to that level.
@BlackAzizAnansi If you're cis, White, rural, or suburban, not a whole lot that most within that descriptor care enough about. The deeply depressing truth, that the rest of us need to bust our butts to flip.
It's making my head spin that its ok for a SCOTUS judge to publish an opinion attempting to discredit a private press entity that wrote of him critically, on a different private press entity that's paywalled. Between Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, rapey guy and handmaid lady, we're long overdue for some clear ethics governance of SCOTUS. Confirmation hearings have devolved into performative PR stunts.
Biden to announce that the US will build a fucking pier to deliver aid to Gaza by sea, instead of the far more obvious witholding of aid (cash, weapons) to Israel until they unblock roads. That's not even about Israel, but more about a commitment to war.
Our war-industrial-complex is such an American economic dependency, that iterrupting it to spare lives in one region, would disrupt the prosperity of another. Human life and peace, nowhere on the table as equations. As Hamas thrives, abroad.
What's up with the dudebro handshake?! Men, why do SO many of you do that? Could some of you do a solid for the rest of us, and maybe just do a normal handshake when another dude pulls one of those on you?
My fella: "Welp, looks like The Lions are back to being themselves."

This is SO rad. More allies with a platform, making movies about OURSELVES and OUR own transformation to love on our peeps, as they shoulder their own burdens pushing through theirs.
More honoring the vulnerability that we can't know what we don't know—and that true love, is giving a shit enough to f*ing ask. To learn. To honor. That real friendship is also true love. <3
Not a fan of being cooped-up all day. Thrilled by news of the Montana case. Kids today are not having any more of the GOP's bullshit. Which makes riding-out this insane PNW heatwave, easier.
Just re-watched Drumpf's education "policy" video, for his 2024 campaign. It's downright terrifying. It's Hitler & Stalin, all over again. Grateful for teachers unions, but still—please lets limit the popcorn and laughter, and not forget what's at stake. We have serious work to do, and a LOT of it.
Anchor Brewing's closure has me wondering if their product was sincerely "too expensive to make," or if SapporoUSA execs just didn't care to continue investing in a product that didn't yield high enough returns.
So much of American business has been plagued by "we can't afford that" as code for "it's not worth it to us if it can't deliver Xy returns." I miss the era of orgs more simply riding the "make cool stuff, get our bills paid, make it better!" energy. Product and purpose, over omgprofit.
Love this open letter to Queen Bey and the Country Music community, from Carlene Carter; the grand-daughter of Country's first family. Can we have more of this wonderfully warm, encouraging, and inclusive enery in our world, please? Heaven knows all of our creative work would be better, if we all just got out of our shells and supported each other, more.
A bibliophile's first nightmare: being hit by a flood. The second nightmare: being hit by a fire. The third, I think I may be living, right now: having to pack-up, move-out, then move back inside every damn book I own for ~1mo, to have our floors re-done. 😭
Friends fluent in webdev, frontend frameworks, and a11y: I'm looking for "textbook" examples of websites coded using React components, that are also highly accessible.
Clean semantic HTML, fully keyboard navigable, clear states on interactive things, etc. No "bent to the will of flustered fullstack developers" CSS, JS, or HTML. No bloat.
Recommendations? Client I'm looking to share examples with, is accounting software for labor unions. No pictures, lots of tables, forms, and data. TIA!!!
Watching "Trading Places" with my sweetie. Which we do, each Christmas season. This year it feels strangely inspiring. The twisted grounding from popular culture, via growing-up GenX in the US of A.
Man, of course Shane had to leave us the month of Christmas. Going to go make a bourbon toddy to cry into, tonight. But I'm still brushing my teeth before bed.
Okay, I switched my outlet covers to white, and these boneheads swapped them back to ivory. (I plan on swapping the plugs to match later, if I want). #disasterremodeling
@ai6yr Jeeeeze. :/ Ours forgot to patch 3 different drywall holes. I guess I'd expected them to use some kind of project management software, or to at least communicate between the "Cut stuff out" and "Patch stuff back" teams. We still have a big hole behind our fridge, that mice are now coming in with to keep warm. No, we don't have to pay more, they still gotta come back—but it's a really dumb hassle.
