@fox I’ve been thinking about this a lot. It would be incredible to claw this space back for the web, but I feel like I don’t have nearly enough resources to understand why the current status quo is so entrenched.
@fox that’s similar to my understanding, like 1. Even square space has a learning curve and not a clear value add 2. For many fb just is the internet so “having a website” isn’t even like a conceptual space
My GPG key expired at 10:10 UTC today, 12 hours after finding out @mwl had all remaining copies of his PGP & GPG book destroyed. If there is a god of encryption, I invoked and angered it yesterday.
Found an amazing art supply store in Sodermalm, bought some Hosho at a pretty good price. Printed some legopress relief, and that smooth finish is amazing
Also bought a wider, harder brayer. So I’m printing Schminke water based Lino inks about 1:1 with retarder on the smooth side of Hosho with a baren. Really happy with the results, will be playing for this week I think!
@danhon@PaulGrahamRaven when I first moved to Stockholm I assumed the rail system was like the Swiss one until Swedes started laughing really hard at that idea
@ross I wrote a sort of … companion response to your manifesto for client-side apps, combined with the static database ideas related to it. https://nikolas.ws/soft-apps/
I swear, so much complexity of my life right now comes from me wanting to be able to graphically draw out an interconnected hypergraph but also have a convenient textual representation of said hypergraph
I'm sure this makes zero sense to people. But ugh. It's so frustrating to have the ideas in your brain and just not be able to really tease them out in a useful way for others
Signed,
trying to figure out how to map "do the platform engineering thing more better" into strategy and architecture
create a dir of .html files, each one is singular resource or concept or whatever.
write your plain text description of what the thing is. eg: /sam-vimes.html => Sam Vimes is the Captain of the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork
Create <a> links between the resources, like: City Watch of <a href=/ankh-morport.html>Ankh Morpork. So far just making a hypertext website. Easy!
@hazelweakly 4. To the <a>, add a property which describes the type of relationship – bonus points of its a uri but it can be whatever: <a property="ex:livesIn" href="/ankh-morpork.html">Ankh Morpork</a>
5. Write out all the things and their relationships like this. You have a hypertext document with plain text and dense links.
6. This is RDFa microformat data! Scrape it out of the HTML and convert it to JSON-LD – with something like this! https://gist.github.com/nikolaswise/d500a4bf7d76134274377b8b47226301
2/??
@hazelweakly I've been using this for writing documentation, enriching text with autolinks, keeping text strings fresh across docs, and managing redirects. Not a ton of visualizing yet, but this has really motivated me to get some sample code up and write a longer explainer of how to use this for good.
I can't know this for sure, but even though I've seen magpies harass hooded crows, I think magpies would get mad at me for harassing hooded crows. The whole "nobody messes with my brother but me" thing.
One of the things my brilliant wife @analog_ashley works on is opening up the world of programming to students who never imagined themselves coding, via discipline-specific coding classes (e.g., coding for biologists!).
But it can be a double-edged sword: discipline-specific coding is a path to needed skills, but can be perceived as "less real" vs CS.
Today she's presenting phenomenal work on this complicated topic at #sigcse2024 and the paper is open to read!
I know I'm a long-form writer, but I just accidentally a 6k word article and had to cut it short and make it into a part one of three because I was getting too long winded
and this is the abbreviated version?
WHY AM I LIKE THIS
(...why yes this is indeed a shill update informing you that a new poast is coming soon to a feed near you 👀)
@baldur have you looked in to short run riso? I don’t think anyone in my community does books as long as yours, but im curious about how the math might work. What would be a workable amount of capital for a short print run?
@hazelweakly thank you! I’ll keep you posted - right now the entire team is working full time on a project on contract and their 750 hours in. It’s quite the change of pace for me, slow and relaxed
