the financials of Beehaw as of June 2023 (and how you can help our website stay up and be more reliable) (opencollective.com)

hey folks, here's another meta-post. this one isn't specifically in response to the massive surge of users, but the surge is fortuitously timed because i've been intending to give a good idea of what our financial stability is like. as a reminder, we're 100%-user funded. everything you donate to us specifically goes to the...

Digitalocean is pretty expensive. For example on hetzner.com you can get 8 vCPU for 15 euros per month. OVH should be similar. So thats really affordable if you have hundreds or thousands of users and a couple of donors.

I really recommend you to use Borg Backup instead. It has incremental encryption which is really useful, and generally does its job well.

You should select both. This is improved in 0.17.3, "undetermined" is automatically always enabled. You need to wait for beehaw to be updated.

Bad gateway is probably because there are so many users now. About the missing mod actions I suggest you open an issue (or maybe there is already one).

There are a few other big instances which are not listed because they don't federate. However none of them can be considered general purpose. I hope this migration wave will lead to new instances being created.

However lemmy.ml also used to be more general purpose, until it focused more on specific topics that the users care about. So maybe it's just the way Lemmy works that general purpose instances get more topic specific over time.

Make sure to checkout a tag like 0.17.2 in both repos. We are currently removing websocket support, so its already gone from the backend. In the frontend this is not finished yet.

US Secret Service claims it can recover stolen crypto and advises using cash for privacy (coinpaper.com)

"The blockchain provides us with an amazing opportunity to track the flow of money", an agency head said in an AMA session on Reddit. The US Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency primarily charged with protecting US political leaders, but it’s also tasked with safeguarding the financial system and fighting...

Luckily police in my country doesnt have time to go around stealing bikes.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

most adults know that second hand bikes are routinely stolen and resold for cash, and buying one without clear provenance is a risky endeavor,

If police come after you because you bought a used bike, you already live in a police state. Most of the world isn't like that.

That community only allows posting in English, and you probably tried to comment with the default language which is "undetermined". In this case it should really be able to select English as default language, as its the only option.

nutomic,
@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

This happens if a community specifies a set of allowed languages, and you are trying to post in a different one. It sounds like the UX and error messages should definitely be improved though. To reproduce this issue, can you say which community you tried to post in and what languages you had enabled at the time?

There is an open issue, contributions welcome!

Its the same for posts or comments, you need to paste the url in the search bar of your instance. For this you should copy the url from the colorful fedilink icon.

The difference is, the moderators moderation action will federate to other instances, but the instance admins will not.

Unless the admin and community are on the same instance, then admin actions will federate. Not so easy to explain...

There is a pull request up for groups in Mastodon, but it hasnt been updated in a long time. It is also completely incompatible with Lemmy.

We dont have any site rules on those topics, so its not a reason for ban/removal on its own. There is also no rule about misinformation, because it can be very hard to determine what falls under that label.

I think if someone is clearly spreading false information, it should be easy enough for any user to debunk it using actual facts. That way mods can focus on their actual task (ensure that people behave well), instead of turning into some kind of “fact checkers”. Besides, everyone can learn something from such discussions.

@nutomic@lemmy.ml avatar

I would prefer something that focuses on the community, and not just on two of the instance admins. But its a good suggestion anyway.

The question about the flagship instance is a difficult one. I guess we would have to talk to the admins of such an instance, and see if we get along with them.

At the same time, I dont think it should be necessary to have a single flagship instance, because that leads to centralization. Maybe there could be multiple such instances in the future?

Without checking, its probably under, 100 MB. The main thing that matters for disk usage are image uploads, which can take a lot of space over time.

One thing you should consider is that all Lemmy instances and communities are moderated by volunteers in their free time. It is important that we make their job as easy as possible, so they dont get overworked, and can focus on other tasks. If we removed the slur filter, it would cause a lot of extra work for them, as they would have to decide in each case if the slur usage is justified or not.

Like we said many times before, removing the slur filter is not up for debate, not unless someone comes up with a better alternative. But we are always open to discuss adding or removing certain terms.

If this is a deal breaker for you then thats okay, I’m sure there are many other platforms where you can use these terms.

“Tankism” isnt a thing, do you mean Marxism-Leninism? In general, you can criticise anything you want, as long as it is based on facts and not on baseless insulting.

Statement on Politics of Lemmy.ml

Recently there have been some discussions about the political stances of the Lemmy developers and site admins. To clear up some misconceptions: Lemmy is run by a team of people with different ideologies, including anti-capitalist, communist, anarchist, and others. While @dessalines and I are communists, we take decisions...

There are more important things than making numbers go up. Just the existance of the slur filter makes right-wingers upset, and stops them from even considering to use Lemmy. That makes our job much easier because we dont have to deal with them.

The age of Signal has come

Recent intrusive changes in the privacy policy of WhatsApp (including the sharing of never before seen amounts of unencrypted user data with the parent company Facebook) have prompted a mass exodus of WhatsApp users to the secure and open-source alternative Signal. I have been hoping for a change like this for years. I wrote a...

The problem is that you as average user have no way to confirm that the app on your phone is actually compiled from the published source code. In that regard it would help if Signal was distributed through F-Droid, which compiles directly from source, but the Signal developers have explicitly forbidden that.
