First of all, thanks for making this thread, I think it is important to discuss these issues in the open, rather than developing grudges.
I think what you are mainly talking about are the comments by @Nevar and @TheAnonymouseJoker which are relatively aggressive. We could probably consider them violations against rule 2 (“Be respectful. Everyone should feel welcome here”), which we havent enforced that much so far. So enforcing that rule more strictly could already be a step in the right direction, though I am unsure where to draw the line (suggestions welcome).
That said, I think it is important to allow everyone to voice their opinion, especially if they disagree. If everyone agrees from the start, that doesnt make for an interesting discussion. This is also why I dislike the idea of fact checkers, because it likely means that one side gets excluded from the discussion, and Lemmy turns into an echo-chamber.
On the technical side, we are working on a feature that will let users block communities (so you dont see their posts anymore). That should be useful for people who simply dont care about politics (or other topics).
We migrated the instance to Digitalocean manually. OVH said that it would take them about a week to get the servers in that location running again. When I checked yesterday, even the admin interface itself was broken. And so far I havent received any direct communication from them, let alone a replacement server.
One thing you should consider is that all Lemmy instances and communities are moderated by volunteers in their free time. It is important that we make their job as easy as possible, so they dont get overworked, and can focus on other tasks. If we removed the slur filter, it would cause a lot of extra work for them, as they would have to decide in each case if the slur usage is justified or not.
Like we said many times before, removing the slur filter is not up for debate, not unless someone comes up with a better alternative. But we are always open to discuss adding or removing certain terms.
If this is a deal breaker for you then thats okay, I’m sure there are many other platforms where you can use these terms.
“Tankism” isnt a thing, do you mean Marxism-Leninism? In general, you can criticise anything you want, as long as it is based on facts and not on baseless insulting.
Recently there have been some discussions about the political stances of the Lemmy developers and site admins. To clear up some misconceptions: Lemmy is run by a team of people with different ideologies, including anti-capitalist, communist, anarchist, and others. While @dessalines and I are communists, we take decisions...
There are more important things than making numbers go up. Just the existance of the slur filter makes right-wingers upset, and stops them from even considering to use Lemmy. That makes our job much easier because we dont have to deal with them.
Besides @dessalines and me who work on Lemmy full time, there are many people who contribute to Lemmy without any financial reward. Those include translators, community moderators, programmers and others. Without them, Lemmy wouldn’t be what it is today....
I have never heard of it before, and with 10k downloads it seems extremely small. Matrix has way more than that and is fully open source and federated, so I would just use that.
Would it be impossible to federate with similar projects like lotide? I know mastodon federates with a bunch of different activitypub microblogging projects.
Do you know what the status of their federation is? It looks like their instances narwhal.city and dev.narwhal.city are federating, but I dont see any info if that is already stable, and compliant wit the ActivityPub standard. In our case, we are working on becoming standard compliant, and will probably finish that within a month or so (see issue #1220](github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/1220).
On another note, I saw a bunch of posts on their site from dev.goldandblack.xyz which seems to be an anarcho-capitalist instance. I’m not sure if that is linked to the lotide developers or not, but its very contrary to the Lemmy userbase which seems mostly anti-capitalist.

The problem is that you as average user have no way to confirm that the app on your phone is actually compiled from the published source code. In that regard it would help if Signal was distributed through F-Droid, which compiles directly from source, but the Signal developers have explicitly forbidden that.
