Announcing crate activitypub-federation 0.4.0: Major rewrite with improvements to usability and documentation

I want to announce a new version of the activitypub-federation crate. Over the last weeks I worked on major improvements to the usability and documentation. It now includes an extensive guide on getting started to implement federation from scratch, and also an example project which can directly be deployed to a server and...

Most Fediverse data is public so its very easy to scrape. Facebook wouldnt even have to implement any federation in their own platforms if thats their only goal.

When have scammers ever cared if something is legal? And corporations like meta can pay a lot more lawyers than you.

This is the first time that people insulted me using software which I created

Its a very interesting feeling. On one hand Im proud because Lemmy has come so far. Two years ago there was only one instance dev.lemmy.ml and no federation. On the other hand disappointed, because some people are unable to appreciate how much time and work I put into this project. Its especially ironic that these attacks are...

Contributions are always welcome! You can look through the issues for anything that you might be interested to work on. Also be sure to join the dev chat on matrix. And do ask if there is anything unclear.

Instructions for lemmyBB installation, test instance available (github.com)

I have finished writing instructions for deploying lemmyBB on a production server, which you can follow at the link above. Right now the project is still in a very early stage, nevertheless main funcionality is already working. This includes browsing communities, posts and comments, writing posts/comments and registration/login....

LemmyBB, a new frontend based on phpBB

Lemmy is structured in a way that backend (database, api, federation etc) and frontend (html, css, javascript) are completely separate. This makes it possible to create other frontends which can take the place of lemmy-ui. I have long been playing with the thought of having a Lemmy frontend that looks more like a traditional...

There is no previous work on Peertube compatibility, it just happens to use Groups for its channels, which Lemmy also uses for communities. Lemmy cant handle videos, but i might look into that.

Free hosting for liberal/mainstream political instance

Lemmy.ml has long had some political conflict among the userbase, especially in communities like worldnews. This is because the instance is composed of both leftists (anarchist/communist) and liberals (those who agree with the mainstream political views in western countries). Additionally, the instance admins all belong to the...

Yhe purpose of rules and moderation is that everyone behaves well, eithoit personal insults etc. Not to decide what is true or false (thats what discussions are for).

If its really misinformation like you say, it should be no problem to debunk it with actual arguments. And if you dont like the community, you can personally block it.

And you want to ban people just because they have a different opinion. To me that sounds much more dangerous.

We dont have any site rules on those topics, so its not a reason for ban/removal on its own. There is also no rule about misinformation, because it can be very hard to determine what falls under that label.

I think if someone is clearly spreading false information, it should be easy enough for any user to debunk it using actual facts. That way mods can focus on their actual task (ensure that people behave well), instead of turning into some kind of “fact checkers”. Besides, everyone can learn something from such discussions.

I would like to add that wolfballs.com will still be included in the instance list on join-lemmy.org. Thats partly because it makes moderation of this instance easier if users can join an instance thats more appropriate for them. Plus the admin is making good contributions to Lemmy and promoting it. Also, Lemmy cant be a real alternative to Reddit if we exclude such a large part of the userbase.

Maybe in the future we can implement more fine-grained federation controls, so that we could federate only certain, non-political communities with wolfballs. For now, every instance admin can decide whether to federate with it or not, and users consider that as a factor when choosing an instance.

Statement on Politics of Lemmy.ml

Recently there have been some discussions about the political stances of the Lemmy developers and site admins. To clear up some misconceptions: Lemmy is run by a team of people with different ideologies, including anti-capitalist, communist, anarchist, and others. While @dessalines and I are communists, we take decisions...

I dont know if the slur filter for lemmy.ml is posted publicly anywhere, but its just insults which no one would use in normal conversation. Also, each instance can define their own filter, or disable it completely.

I see your problem but I dont think this can be fixed with any rule change or Lemmy feature. It would be possible to let people access posts after they are removed by a mod, but that wont help if your account gets banned. Or if your account gets hacked and deleted. Or if the instance goes down permanently for some reason.

If you are worried about your content disappearing, you should keep backups. For example with an API client which regularly downloads everything to a local file. There is also a feature request for a functionality to export an archive with user data. Even better would be an external service like reveddit.com which reads content from the API and stores it.

I suggest you create a new post to discuss this problem, then more people can give their ideas and opinions.
