Some bozo on the internet. I used to be a real clown, but only for children’s charities. Used to be a Bike MS team captain. Right now I'm seeking a charity that works with my physical limitations. (But I still love my bike.)

Don’t mind the name, it’s been mine for decades, I'm kind of stuck with it.

Be safe out there!

I had a near miss during this morning's ride - less than 100 feet from my home.

My back door faces the residential street that enters my development. On the other side is the parking lot of a strip mall. When riding, I always use the parking lot of the strip mall and the street light it provides as safer than trying to enter traffic from my own street - but people use our street as a way to avoid that street light when driving to the mall.

As I was coming out of the parking lot into my home street an asshole made a left into the parking lot - but into the left side of the road, where I riding up to the intersection.

Didn’t even see me till the last second. I slammed on the brakes, he missed me by inches and then I fell over…

And, of course, he kept going.

It was the closest thing I’ve had to a serious accident in years and now that the adrenaline has faded my scrapped up knee (and my bad back) are stiffening nicely...

Fortunately, the bike seems fine. My knee saved it.

How to know your DVD player is too old:

  1. All the DVDs are playing in sepia tone. (Not kidding.)
  2. You still own a DVD player.

I have to say, I don't even remember how old this thing was, but the Mrs felt kind of judged when she wanted to watch her Pride and Prejudice tonight.

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@Stacky We do have a lot of DVDs, although most are kid-oriented.

I solved the problem by pulling the DVD player (which, I discovered, still used component video, not HDMI) and replaced it by hooking up the playstation that's been in the basement for a year now.

thinking of maybe getting rid of my Vox SDC-1 Mini. it's a fun little thing to have at my desk to noodle around with in spare moments, but maybe the mandolin will take that role. Or just a normal guitar.

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@gzt Meanwhile, I'm just sitting here, thinking about how I gave up my keyboard lessons when I got to the one where I was supposed to play "When the Saints Come Marching In" with hands reversed and I realized I couldn't get the pinky of my left hand to move independently of my 3rd finger - and I'm left-handed, so...

;-)

Seriously, if you have the guitar, why ditch it? Stuff it in a closet so you can rediscover it when you get bored of the mandolin.

Today’s looking like a great day to ride out to Purcelleville for barbecue and ice cream. Mid-80s, sunny, light breeze.

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@wiredog That looks amazing...

Our local BBQ place closed a while back. It was literally the first place I wanted to visit when I was recovered enough to leave my house.

We're heading to NC for a week or so in mid-May to visit my brother-the-hippie. Imagonna make him take me out for bbq every day we're there.

so for a while the grocery store was being extremely annoying with their theft detection -- basically, if you put your own reusable grocery bag in the bagging area, they'd be like HEY YOU LITTLE THIEVING SHIT, STOP IT, and call over the attendant to verify you didn't try to steal anything. combined with the city's mandate to bring your own bags, it made self-checkout a trying experience. but the last couple times, not a peep!

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@gzt Boy that sounds stupid.

Our local market asks you if you brought your own bags before you begin, not how well that works because I never remember.

I enjoy almost everything about photography except sensor cleaning, which I do not enjoy even one little bit.

And before you tell me to use film, I enjoy keeping dust out of film holders even less.

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@mattblaze How often do you clean your sensor? How do you know it's time to do so? (honest questions, I have no idea.)

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@mattblaze Interesting. I've never even tried to clean mine over many cameras and many years, primarily out of sheer terror that I will destroy the sensor.

Tik Tok is totally out of control.

Oh wait, this is Facebook? But they’re American!

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@jimgon So, the report I heard was that Meta actually asked the users for permission to install the software. Is that not true?

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@gzt @jimgon IIRC, this sounds like the press is trying to get clicks out of tying an old class action suit to Tik Tok - we already knew that Meta had been sued for paying teens to install a package that let Meta track all their actions. The only new thing here is that the press has tied that to TikTok - but this program would have collected everything not just Tik Tok and SnapChat.

Just went and ordered a new mirrorless camera to replace my 10+ years old Olympus PN-2 and Nikon D5300.

I spent a week researching, got advice on reddit, then waited a week to make sure I really wanted to do it.

The gating function was that I'm taking some family to Longwood Gardens in April and I want to have the best camera possible for taking pictures of dragonflies and waterlilies.

Now I'm twitching as I wait for delivery.

Also, the adapter so I can still use my 35mm prime and my 18-400 zoom. (People keep insisting the adapter won't change the focal length or aperture of the lenses. That makes no sense to me but that's what they're saying...)

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@wiredog It's tempting, I've seen you get some nice results with yours. Unfortunately it seems job #1 will be finding a camera shop willing to do a firmware update on my Tamron 18-400 lens. Boy was that frustrating. Put it on the Z fc and the camera just says "error".

@wiredog Is it time again for the press to discover that oppressed people want to defend themselves?

I just saw something that gun sales to blacks rose 45% last year.

@wiredog @jimgon I knew about the Pink Pistols but I couldn't remember the name.

So, here's a new one. I just received an empty shipping envelope. The post office happily tracked it, and confirmed I received it. Origin is apparently a printing company in Minnesota.

But it's an empty bag. The adhesive strip is still in place, so it's not a case of something falling out - it doesn't seem like anything was ever there.

And I can't even figure out what was supposed to be in it. I'm not expecting any packages...

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@gedvondur @devtrash @gzt It might be the age of the account that's important? Mine is 17 years old. I have a lot more karma, but I haven't done any moderating since my health issues started.

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@Stacky @gzt Stacky, that might be the nicest thing you've ever said about me...

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@wiredog @jimgon @Stacky @gzt Definitely. I went for a bike ride today. Towards the end I heard a new noise from the bike. A loud "tick... tick... tick..." that was in sync with my pedaling.

A few seconds later I realized the noise was coming from my knee, not the bike...

obvioustroll,
@obvioustroll@hulvr.com avatar

@wiredog @jimgon @Stacky @gzt Yeah... it was like that earlier, but Friday and Saturday were sunny although the temp barely got over 40. I reminded myself I still had a bunch of cold-weather commuting gear and pulled it all out.
