I'm a furry trans girl*. Into geeky nonsense (notably ttRPGs, game design, drawing, linguistics). Nostalgic for early-2000s Internet.
Awkward, but friendly.

DMs generally open, I'm always happy to make a new friend.

A lot of what I post has to deal with politics and/or my being a ball of issues. You've been warned.

If I upset you or otherwise screw up, let me know, and I'll try and be better going forward.

    • gender's a lot, so I'm possibly bigender or genderfluid. Still girl, I think.

This feeling is, to me, like 20% of the experience of being autistic xD

I need to slap one of our managers with a dictionary. If we need to spread some information around, apparently we need to "socialise that information". What, it needs to seize the means of production, or become accustomed to living among people? It is not a worker or a cat.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

@patterfloof

Hit them with a thesaurus while you're at it. "share". "broadcast". "publish". "spread", as you mention. "send out". "publicise". "communicate". All work depending on exact intended meaning. And those are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.

Wait, so both Deadpool and Harley Quinn are bi/pan, and they are both some of the only characters of their respective franchises that can engage in meta-commentary....is this a secret bi/pan stereotype? Does everyone believe we have the ability to engage in meta-commentary to an unseen audience and break the fourth wall on reality?!

Joscelyn turns to camera Little do they know, right? Shhh...this is just between you and me...

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

@JoscelynTransient

I mean, that's an interesting point, but I think their ability to be meta is meant to imply they are perceiving reality this way because they're mentally ill. In a "wacky" sort of way.

Which is not great both because that's a trope about mental illness that needs to go away, and because I suspect they're bi/pan because that's just character shortcut for "this character is wild and wacky".

Sorry to be a party pooper. And I say that despite liking both characters a lot. But I'm not sure I love the origins of this particular aspect of either. Even if how it's expressed does make them very cool characters.

OK, this is my last Hail Mary to try and use Godot.

I tried to install Visual Scripting as a module, because that's the only way I'll ever be able to work in Godot ( https://github.com/godotengine/godot-visual-script/tree/main ).

I didn't know how to install a module, so I followed the instruction here, i.e. copied the files to a /modules folder in the main Godot folder ( https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/contributing/development/core_and_modules/custom_modules_in_cpp.html ).

It didn't seem to have done anything. I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

I asked in the Godot Discord channel, but nobody answered me so far, and since other questions have been answered since, I doubt they will.

Alright, so there's this thing I've noticed lately.

I feel... not exactly tired, and not exactly warm (like it'd be with a fever). It's this feeling that my body contains too much warmth.

I'm very slightly sluggish, not unlike the feeling one has when groggy after too long a time not sleeping. But I am not particularly low-energy.

These are all on the VERGE of being physical sensations, but not quite literally that. And I'm describing only a crude approximation of those, sorry.

Since I've never felt quite the exact same way, and the only new factors are antidepressant and HRT, is this a thing that happens on HRT? Is it normal, is it typical, does it mean things are working in some respect?

Or is it unrelated or perhaps even I'm imagining things?

I could use some info or feedback from trans women (and NB people) on HRT, and boosts from anyone else. Thanks!

I recall saying once that trans men are just invisible past a certain point and expressed my annoyance that trans women, the way I saw it,are left on our own to struggle.

I've since changed my mind. I see more and more trans men talk about trans rights, and even better - talking about trans men's perspectives, struggles and if they felt it appropriate, sometimes their pain.

I just wanna say I'm proud of y'all that spoke up and opened up and shared. Y'all are pretty rad.

There is this thing that has been happening in popular culture that one might deem the "Midichlorian effect". It consists in analysing and dissecting something that probably doesn't gain anything from being dissected.

If your story has magic or mystical elements, it's fine to leave them as-is. Sure, if the story is ABOUT dismantling certain ideas, it's fair game.

(as usual with very long threads, rest of the thread goes unlisted.)

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

2/?
Terry Pratchett did away with a lot of fantasy tropes in his books, particularly earlier ones. And Pterry has always been cool. I want to write a thread once about how Granny Weatherwax is not just autism representation, she's the BEST autism representation.

Anyway.

Sometimes, the story is not ABOUT that sort of thing, but popular culture (and discussion of popular culture) feels this irrepressible need to apply real-world logic to things.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

3/?
I blame a lot of that on nerd culture and specifically on D&D. It's a logical effect of early D&D players trying to squeeze every opportunity from every ambiguity in the rules and exploit both game mechanics and game worlds.

It's a fun exercise, but rarely works for the STORY. Which is no, your novel will not gain anything from figuring out the physics of a Fireball spell. Get out of here.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

4/?
But this idea is not just stemming from nerds. And there's one surprisingly old (though still modern-day) variant of it, that I absolutely loathe.

I'm talking about genies and wishes. And rules lawyering the wishes. Again, it's fine if it happens as a fun nerd activity. But stories are looked at from this perspective, and just, ugh. That's insufferable.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

5/?
Let's start with the obvious - in original folklore, genies (or djinnis, however you want to spell this - yes, both are the same, frickin' say both words out loud. Stop pretending your distinctions from modern popculture have any basis in folklore.

And yes, I've seen people act like the two are different in Arabic folklore.) are just magical spirits that are effectively the slave of whoever owns a clay pot that King Solomon or whoever trapped them in.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

6/?
That is slavery imposed upon a presumably sapient creature. Like... even Disney's Aladdin acknowledges that.

Very cool and very normal that one'd expect a non-roguish characters to get MORE out of that than even originally meant for them.

Now, we don't have to go into the implications in a fun adventure story or whatever. But when a character in a story tries to squeeze more out of a djinni than the three wishes... now hold on, let's back up.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

7/?
You do know the original Aladdin story, which probably wasn't even an Arabic folk tale in the first place and was added to 1001 Nights by a Frenchman, didn't include this arbitrary limit of wishes? This sort of thing comes from Slavic folklore and various tales about the Golden Fish that is gracious enough to GRANT someone a wish when it's caught and released.

@oddtail@meow.social avatar

So sometimes ppl express this sentiment that it's hard to make friends as an adult. That you can't just walk up to a person and suggest a fun activity or say "do you wanna be friends?"

On the one hand, I like the acknowledgment that it's nice to connect to ppl in an unpretentious way.

OTOH, it's cute they think this childhood experience is even close to universal. I'm much closer to being able to tell a random person "hey, let's do shit together" than EVER as a child.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

And like, I don't wanna blow this out of proportion because at the end of the day, it's a small thing.

But in its own small way, having been able to gauge reactions as a kid to just talk to someone is a form of privilege.

I couldn't talk to adults at a local geocery store or check out a book at a school library. Making friends with other children, the vicious little sharks able to smell weakness a mile away? Get the eff out of here.

oddtail, to random
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

Yes, you've seen the CWs correctly. The two things I ramble incoherently and at length about finally met. We're doomed.

Anyway. I noticed I started using the word "like" as a filler word in my posts much, much more often since I came out as trans. I promise it's not a deliberate, forced change. I'm not trying to be stereotypical. (what'd the stereotype even BE)

But it's part of how my register shifted. I'm not fully sure why, but I think it's interesting that it happened.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

Don't get me wrong, it is part (a byproduct?) of my language changing, and obviously that's in part a choice, obviously.

But this particular word just pops up more often. Feels correct.

I think I'm trying to soften the way I speak, subconsciously, and make it flow better and be less of a brick wall of ideas. Have more personality?

(yes, all those walls of text is how I speak AFTER I started talking in a way that's less overly dense with information. I know, I know. LOL)

Internet hivemind, help a trans gal out <3

Looking to buy a wig that ships to Europe, as close as possible to this ref photo. Shape is important, color secondary - black preferable, any dark color that seems natural is OK. Thick fringe, possibly longer than in photo a big plus.

Price's a BIG factor, so looking for the best possible quality/price ratio. I'm willing to pay more if quality is amazing, though. Both real hair and a very convincing fake are OK.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

Extra details:

  • I have a big head, so a wig for a smaller one might be a problem and look weird.
  • I don't have a set budget, but I'm looking for what will serve as my "real" hair in the foreseeable future, so it has to look reasonably convincing.
  • I ask the Internet instead of Googling because it's hard to verify quality by browsing on the Internet, so I'm relying on others' experience.
  • Euro sellers = not having to wait too long and easier return, but not a must.

I'll admit I have thin skin, and at the end of the day I'm not like, personally outraged, but I'll admit the dismissive attitude a lot of Gen-Zers have towards Millenials on social media (primarily TikTok, because it skews young) still annoys me.

I didn't enjoy being bullied when I was 11 and I don't particularly enjoy attempts of 20-year-olds at bullying when I'm 36. Even if the attempts are not directed at like, me specifically.

Plus, they lack skill.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

And like, I'm genuinely too old to care beyond occasionally rolling my eyes and giving an exasperated sigh.

But honestly, what the eff did Millenials do to Gen Z as a generation. I don't get it. And vindictively, I kinda can't help but anticipate the moment Gen Alpha or whatever is old enough to make fun of Gen Z, who will be completely unprepared for it.

But knowing the cultural punching bag Millenials are, chances are Alpha will just make fun of us, too xD

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

Interestingly, I never saw that dynamic between Gen X and Millenials. Broadly speaking, Millenials were kinda in love with cultural hand-me-downs from Gen X and had more of a "adoring younger sibling" attitude. I mean generally, of course there were exceptions.

And like, Gen X got off easy. I know they were shat on by Boomers, but ever since those shifted their attention to Millenials, Gen X are effectively free from this nonsense.

I don't get it.

oddtail,
@oddtail@meow.social avatar

And like... Boomers are the generation with the most power in the West currently, yeah.

But Gen X are a big part of what ruined the politics and the environment and the economy. They are literally the yuppie generation, the generation that was "fuck the system" when they were 15 and corporate climbers when they were 30.

What's the biggest contribution of Millenials as a generation to the shape of the world? Recording videos on our phones wrong, apparently.
