Re: Forum/community/UGC platforms selling data to AI/LLM companies to learn on.

I've owned and operated forums (and other spaces with UGC) since 1999. I have millions of pieces of content covering specific verticals in databases, written by people who are smart and deeply interested in those verticals. Some are from closed communities, some are live.

I went digging through my old photos and videos, and here's some of my (often blurry) favorite moments in honor of the day.

The Greatest Night in Pop is out now on Netflix, covering the one night only recording of 1985's star-studded charity single, "We Are the World." There are so many small, fun details in the interactions between the artists on the song, that were caught on camera. I enjoyed it.

Take Care of Maya is out today on Netflix, examining "a family's distressing journey within a flawed healthcare industry while exposing deep fissures in the child welfare system." It's a hard watch, especially for parents.

Simple truth: When you say "nazis welcome," more of them show up. Sooner or later, that's all your platform is known for. And when you're allowing nazis to raise funding via your platform, with you joining in the profits, that reality will come even more quickly.

There is this moment in Netflix's WHAM! documentary where Elton John is presenting George Michael with an award in 1985, and John offers this effusive praise of both him and Wham! It was a touching, validating moment for Michael, who had idolized John since he was a kid.

Photo dump from Patrick's first trip to Disneyland last month. His first ride was Haunted Mansion, and he was a big fan of Redd the pirate.

He also met Doctor Strange and Mickey Mouse and charmed his way into a free light-up toy by smiling and waving at a lady who came back a minute later and asked if he'd like it.

In the weeks leading up to watching the film American Symphony, I had been thinking about American patriotism and what it meant to me. There are times in my life where I have felt patriotism for my country. But since 2015 or so, those moments have felt few and far between.

"Managing Online Forums" is 16 years old today. I started writing it 5 years before that. At first, I didn't know I had a book. Pitching it myself, I signed with a small independent press, and then they dropped me. I got an agent (rest in peace, Neil), and literally every single publisher said no, except for 1. And even that one only came back after several months of having it in a file.

Elon Musk claiming he'll get rid of Twitter's blocking feature is silly, but it doesn't have anything to do with Apple's app store guidelines. A lot of well-meaning folks are misreading the guidelines, believing that if you allow user-generated content in an app, you have to give users the ability to block other users.

You can now block OpenAI's web crawler from using your website to train the models used by ChatGPT.

This should have happened sooner. It is also not retroactive. Whatever they already have - they are keeping, for now.

For the time being, I've decided to block them from my own writing as well as the online communities that I manage.

3 of the 4 members of my team at CNN have found work. One more to go!

The last member is experienced in community management and moderation, with time spent in the news, language learning, and gaming industries. He's led teams, managed volunteers, and dealt with external and internal communities. He's done all of the things that come with community work.

This Stack Overflow/OpenAI news is an absolute disaster and a dark day in the history of online communities.

It's hard to read this as anything other than Stack Overflow being desperate for cash. Reports are already surfacing about how badly they handled it, and I expect that will only worsen.

Netflix just released their Global Top 10 for January 29-February 4, and the NUMBER ONE ENGLISH FILM IN THE WORLD is The Greatest Night in Pop, with nearly 20 million hours viewed.

It was in the top 10 in 68 countries, and was the #1 film in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal and Sweden. It has also been well-reviewed, with a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Congrats to everyone involved, including the Netflix doc team (and my wife)!

I give away strategy ideas all the time. Not just in public, but for free on 1-to-1 calls and in messages. Once upon a time, I worried more about people taking my ideas. But as I've stacked the years, I've come to realize that there isn't much point in regarding your ideas as magical because someone probably already had that idea. Ideas are pretty cheap.

Ultimately, if you can execute, that's what matters.
