Off to Beyond Tellerrand in Dusseldorf.

Looking forward to it, but I can see myself travelling less after this year.

@html5test — So far it’s just me and the city. Gonna wander down now 🙂

As more and more people are posting about their arrival in Düsseldorf for , FOMO is growing strong over here, as I won’t be able to attend this edition because of one of our kids’ birthday. 😢 (But also: 🥳🎂)

I would have loved to see and talk to sooo many of you! I really hope you’re having an incredible, wonderful time together! 💚 Maybe I’ll see a few of you at ?

@matthiasott — My kid’s birthday was yesterday, so I just managed to squeeze it into my schedule 😇

preface to say: I don't want to be friends with you because you hate Apple—it's among the least imaginative things to build your personality on 30 years running yet people still do it with gusto

But man, what a sad moment for a company that's built all its good will on the fusion of engineering and the humanities. The whole point of Apple products is to support your success with everything this ad so gleefully destroys

But there's a deeper irony…

@danilo — Yeah, what a bizarre sentiment. It's so needlessly sinister.

Way more excited about the Switch successor than the iPads.

paulca,

@janl — I love how where the iPads were entirely unsurprising, the next Switch will almost certainly be a massive surprise.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@janl It will be obvious, but probably not in the way we expect ☺️

Chucking an absolute rake of paper parking permits because they expired. What a waste. There is such a beautiful, simple, “build it once and it works forever” app that could handle this, but it will never be built, or at least not soon, because software procurement is so complex.

@danilo — So glad to have graduated out of it. You might say it’s the LastPass of CSS frameworks *

here's my thing about LastPass

that product looks like shit

it performs at exactly the level of integrity that you should expect from a product that looks that much like shit

some things really are that simple

@danilo What's your password manager of choice?

I'm going through various AI coding helpers for a few months now. I want to keep an open mind and understand if there's something really mind-blowingly helpful. But so far, I haven't found anything that is more than "nice to have". I think it's also a lot about the tasks that we need to solve at @getkirby Coding speed is never really an issue. That's why I don't massively profit from autocompletion help. The obstacles are always conceptual questions. Did you find anything indispensable for you?

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby — I went to a meetup about this in Dublin on Tuesday. The consensus seemed to be that the rate of improvement in models is bound to continue, and when it gets "good enough" it will be everywhere.

As I type this I'm getting definite "this year will be the year of linux on the desktop" vibes 🤣

But my limited experience seems very similar to yours.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby — I mean, it's undoubtedly useful for accelerating certain types of learning and being a sidekick, or as someone put it "everyone has an intern, even the interns” ... which is awesome.

I think the hype rests on how much better e.g. GPT4 was over GPT3 and 3.5, and the assumption that that order of magnitude in improvement is coming soon.

And then the other point is that the general purpose models get much better when trained on a specific subset of data.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @getkirby — Currently using it to put a demo together using React, which I've never learned and don't really want to learn. So a very specific use-case where I can accomplish it quickly myself.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @armstrong Yeah, it's a paradigm shift. I've been playing with Vercel's v0 today which I've largely ignored up to now because I don't use React.

It's amazing, but ... it's also chugging out a lot of boilerplate.

But I think it speaks to the ability to do impactful stuff here. It's just that it can do a lot of stuff.

I need to do some multi track audio editing on Mac - what's my best option for a one time purchase? Logic Pro?

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@_ChrisHarris I use Adobe Audition which is part of the Creative Suite.

GarageBand is also great, depending on use case.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@_ChrisHarris Ah! I would have just defaulted to Drag and Drop for GarageBand, but I guess it's the difference between designing software where “Import" is the expected first step rather than assuming any prior knowledge of editing tools.

The effective altruism cult is an inevitable, metastatic outgrowth of Silicon Valley’s infantile libertarian politics.

These guys never got past utilitarianism in their philosophical development, and effective altruism lets them invent a speculative majority their actions can benefit, at the expense of any minority they choose.

That effective altruism would become entangled with the most successful cryptocurrency criminal in the game isn’t an accident:

THEY ARE THE SAME GRIFT

@danilo — I really need to sit down and read A Theory of Justice properly. I "studied" it in university, but it really is a watershed work. You either stand before it or in front of it. There's no in between.

I used to wear a wrist brace, for pain from working on a computer all day.

It just occurred to me today that I don't even know where my wrist brace is; I haven't worn it probably since October, when I started using the MoErgo Glove80 keyboard as my main daily driver.

Keyboards like this take a lot of time to adjust to, but if you have RSI from typing (or want to avoid it), I'd definitely say it's worth a look.

paulca,
@paulca@mastodon.social avatar

@collinsworth @danilo — Adding that to a wish list I think. I got the Apple keyboard because of Touch ID, but there’s plenty of room on my desk!
