I honestly don’t understand why so many people use Chrome when there are so many options!

I thought ridge vents were all the rage these days. I installed ridge vents and then put up Reflectix Reflective Roll Insulation from the soffits up to 12-18 inches from the ridge. It reduced the heat in the attic by a noticeable amount and wasn’t too expensive or difficult to install. I also blew in additional insulation. I plan on adding additional venting in the soffits in the future. My experience is that fans fail, require maintenance, use energy, and tend to only cool the attic off in certain areas if not well planned out with supporting architecture and venting.

I like it, it shows someone put some effort into it!

Apple's Crafty Game: Playing by the Rules, but Not Really (lemmy.world)

In a sleek, minimalist boardroom at Apple Campus 2, Aka “Apple Park,” Apple’s top executives, all uniformly dressed in black turtlenecks, are gathered. They’re surrounded by the aura of their ‘Reality Distortion Field’ generator, as designed by and once used to enhance the persuasive power of Apple’s co-founder,...

For me it is Youtube, Lemmy, Verity or Mastodon. Sometimes it is Hacker News or Slashdot.

When I start a personal project I create a readme file that has a ToDo section and a Change Log section. Anything I think of that I might want to do I put under ToDo, break it into small chunks and prioritize it. When a task is completed under the ToDo section, I move it to the Change Log section. Easy to maintain, track progress, and documents both a Road Map and Changes all in one place. It also has a section for references to shared assets that need attribution. Actually to keep it simple the same document usually also has an about section, an installation section, and a usage section.

After looking at other’s lists I think I am missing a good document server. Emby isn’t the best music and photo server so I could look at improving that, but it has been good enough for those purposes that I haven’t felt like going to the trouble of installing anything else.

My ad blocker was working so well I didn’t even realize I had it installed and blocking ads on YouTube. I don’t mind watching a few ads as long as it doesn’t get out of hand.

If I had to speculate and GUESS, based on information I know now and if I give the CTO the benefit of the doubt and assume he was competent (contrary to what I saw), I would say they were having trouble canceling the contract with the third party consulting firm we were hired through. I also think they might have been quietly moving their operations out of state to another infrastructure originally belonging to another company they bought or merged with that had their own IT team and wanted us kept out of the loop. Hiring us might have been a way to reduce our compensation and get us under an NDA regarding the move. When hiring us failed they were able to re-negotiate the terms of the contract with the consulting firm for half of what it was. Again, just a guess.

Home Networking (lemmy.world)

Maybe not the prettiest, but a little cleaner than it was when it began. If I had it to do over, I might use a small 9.5" rack if such a thing existed. Originally I had the Netgear and patch cables in a Square-D circuit breaker box but it seemed unnecessary and a bit cramped with no air flow. I then added the Firewalla and moved...

Yes, WHY do I write all my SQL statements In all CAPS and why isn’t there a better SQL editor, and why hasn’t SQL evolved more than it has?

Siding Rain Screen Detail

I am replacing the siding on one wall of my house. I am going all out with it and including a rain screen in the design. It will consist of the sheathing, ice and water shield on sheathing, 2" Polystyrene Board Insulation, furring strips, and finally Hardie Panel siding. There will be a top and bottom bug shield (Cor-A-Vent)....

Try it out for a week, most schools will let you do that. If you like what you see, you like the other students, and you like the instructor, then try it for 3 months and reevaluate then. I recommend trying many different martial arts. Just don’t let them give you a hard sell and sign you into a 1 year contract! Whatever you do, don’t choose just one martial art and do only it for the rest of your life!

Looking for mounting ideas

I have three extra solar panels from a pack of 10 I ordered. I don’t have room for them to fit with my other 7 panels and am looking for unique ideas on where to put them. I could throw them up on my east facing roof, or perhaps on a large playhouse in the back yard. I could lean them up against a south wall, or mount them to...

This changes everything! (DIY HVAC) (youtu.be)

Will Prowse just posted a video on his DIY Solar Panel YouTube Chanel on installing a Mini-split HVAC system. He goes through the steps of installing one similar to one I installed in 2014. I paid around $678 for the unit with the intention of installing everything and then having a HVAC company charge the lines. I got busy and...

Tools for designing and documenting solar and power system.

If your intention is to supply electricity back to the grid, it is advisable to consult your electric company and local permitting offices (such as city, county, or provincial authorities) to determine the necessary documentation. Requirements may vary, with some entities having stringent specifications for plan submissions,...

What school is this? I would think this design would lend itself to someone getting hurt or even killed, hopefully it only rotates clockwise. The only point I can see for this is that once you leave through this door, you can't go back in... or keep people from sneaking in through this door. Ok, it makes more sense when I think of it that way.

Similar situation. I realized my desktop that I constantly upgrade every few years was always going to be faster and more powerful than older or salvaged hardware. I now just keep it on all the time and run VMs on it as needed. Just one physical machine to maintain now! I run Aster on it so it acts as three physical machines. It is my gaming machine, my parteners gaming machine, file server, development server, database server, emulator pedestal, Emby server, Blue Iris server, and my work computer.

Best Consumer Hybrid Inverter? (signaturesolar.com)

Currently the best hybrid inverter has got to be the EG4 18KPV Inverter with the Sol-Ark 15K coming in second only due to the $2,600 price difference. Both of these inverters can do it all. They are relatively easy to install, can be used with a small system and can scale up to handle a 200 amp system with as little as three...

Why are you comfortable working with electrical systems?

Some people are terrified by electricity. I am guessing few in this community fall into that category. What makes you comfortable working with solar systems? For me, my father was an electrical engineer and I learned a lot from watching and helping him run new power and phone outlets. There wasn't anything he was scared of...

Din Rail Ampere Meters

Are there any Din Rail Ampere Meters that don't require AC power to run? I currently have a shunt in my system that monitors the DC power coming in from my panels. I am about to upgrade my inverter to a smarter one and I will no longer need the shunt. But when looking around, I found some Din Rail ampere meters for AC and...
