I’m honestly surprised it took them this long to start doing this. It always seemed weird that they were allowing adblock users to get away with it.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I wouldn't trust my security on a free piece of software running on an raspberry pi. You would be best using a regular off the shelf alarm system, I'm sure you can still get ones that aren't Internet enabled

In my experience, any open source camera software is unreliable and clunky. To be honest though, a lot of cloud solutions seem quite bad too. What I'm talking about though is an old fashioned alarm system that has no Internet capability and just has a pin pad, a backup battery and a siren.

You can get wireless ones. You have to be careful though as cheap wireless ones can be insecure. It's very much a get what you pay for type scenario

Yes you are the only person in the entire world who finds it creepy

Voat was born out of several questionable subs being banned from reddit so naturally the userbase was into very questionable things. That's why they failed so hard

Everything needs to generate some sort of value - I imagine a lemmy instance would generate value for you in the form of learning, or maybe the sense of accomplishment from maintaining a community. That differs from how centralised social media generates value in the form of data or money which is usually at odds with the userbase.

True, but the amount of instances will probably scale too. You can have premium instances that cost a monthly fee, ones that solicit donations, maybe ones that run ads. But you'll also always have the passion project instances being ran for a specific community out of the kindness of someone's heart.

I'm of the opinion that a YouTube alternative is genuinely impossible without it being a subscription service. There's not enough money in the amount of advertising people will tolerate in order to successfully run a video streaming site at scale.

Their entire repair programme is designed to be as obtuse as possible whilst still allowing them to say they offer repair. It's like the kid in school that spends so much time cheating on an exam that they could've just studied

That's capitalism though isn't it? All electricity generation exists in order to make money

Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

I am theoretically switching over from Reddit to Lemmy. Finding myself spending more time on Lemmy than on Reddit. Maybe it's because I am limited to using the desktop and can't aimlessly browse Reddit on my iPhone. Of late, the only subreddits I cared for were on sports and their matchday threads and r/watches. I found myself...

peter,

For me, there's not enough activity on here yet and still some subreddits that haven't got equivalents here.

Next you'll be saying Disney World is a programming reference

Reddit is a VC backed startup so this was always going to happen. I am surprised it took so long, to be honest.

What video game is an absolute 100/100 in your opinion?

Portal 2

It's a drone in the shape of a classic UFO? What is the actual new technology here?

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I hope so, but I can't help but feel like they'll roll out the PR machine closer to the time and everyone will have forgotten about all this

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

I sure hope you're right

I've tried it but my cat gets scared of the footsteps behind her and tries to run away

What are some more obscure PS2 games that are absolutely fantastic? I'm looking into playing a couple on my steam deck

peter,

I might be biased since I played this as a kid, but Seek And Destroy is pretty fun.

I don't think a corporate instance is necessarily a bad thing. The purpose of federation is to give consumers choice, and if the right choice for some people is an instance managed by a corporation and the corporation makes enough money to keep it going then it's a win win, right?
