Yeah I've just put an emergency captcha on my guestbook form (thanks )! If I can't style it to match my site I'll have to find another way - but seems more spammers than usual are finding it lately...

@sarajw Oh no, this is why we can‘t have nice and simple old-web things 😭

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@sarajw Yes, but it would be so nice to not have to fight these fights! I keep dreaming of that wonderful world … 🥴

@sarajw Haha, you‘re right, thanks for the earwormy reminder!

Just given away the last (apart from some kept for sentimental reasons) of the baby/toddler clothes that the kids grew out of.

After spending tons of energy sorting it out for a school flea market where there were a lot more sellers than buyers, I was pretty frustrated. Thankfully Kleinanzeigen (German Craigslist/Gumtree thing) has been a winner.

A few people came to pick out things they liked best, and now the rest has gone to midwives' supplies, to give to new parents who can't afford much.

@sarajw It feels so good to clean out these things, I think. We cleaned our kid‘s room this summer as a whole-fanily activity and I think it helped all of us move on and accept that some phases of her young life have definitely passed – and focus on who she is now!

Flashback to that time when I was in a hotel and my key wouldn’t work so I started knocking on the door only to realize I was on the wrong floor knocking on some random man’s door at 7am.

(He was very nice in spite of my faux pas)

@Alice Happened to our family just this Monday 😂 The elevator stopped a floor early and because the receptionist told us the door was a bit tricky to unlock, we tried everything to open that wrong door – no one opened, gladly …

Is there some kind of dribbble/behance equivalent portfolio platform for interface designers to show non-visual design or non-graphic design oriented work?

With projects & essays like these on interface exploration?

https://a9.io/glue-comic/

Where folks come up with novel UI metaphors, conventions, design concepts, patterns, affordances & write extensively on it?

Where they can experiment and showcase prototypes of novel UI concepts, patterns, conventions, paradigms supplemented with essays

@impactology Not as fun as Dribbble and not a portfolio platform, but as a reader this has given me interesting new ideas and food for thought in the past along the lines you describe: https://interfacecritique.net

@impactology It’s been a while and I no longer have access to the library I put these in, but I can try 😅 Especially in times like now where big corps optimize all the UIs to squeeze out every last bit of attention, I find it helpful to understand computing from different perspectives, e.g. laid out in the editorial of vol 1: programmatic, genealogies, philosophies, projects, politics. https://interfacecritique.net/journal/volume-1/editorial/

Some other articles I enjoyed:

@impactology There are at least two more articles I remember liking a lot, but can't find them. Maybe they're in the 2016 book. Note to self: don't build a library for a company that you will leave, build it for yourself 😬

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@impactology You should write an article for them, I'm sure it would be a great fit! (And I need to start reading newer editions again, I have put it aside for a while now …)

peter,
@peter@gassner.io avatar

@impactology Judging from your posts I've read on here so far, I think that is more than enough of a credential – thoughts like yours are what I'd expect to be published there :) I recommend to get in touch with them!

@impactology Which is why I'm glad this was part of our IxD curriculum. Even though many aspects of this large field require depth of knowledge, I think it's important to keep a breadth of knowledge as well, lest we reduce ourselves to tunnel vision and create shiny stuff that doesn't work because it doesn't respect our full human condition.

Modern Apple UIs are an example of that: all the interdisciplinary knowledge has been lost and their designers forgot where it came from and why …

@impactology See, one more thread that is very credential-ly :) One of the reasons I admire people like Bret Victor is that they can build the bridges between history and theory and praxis and show us how things could be done – this is such a difficult feat to do! But that's not sustainable, so the way forward must be interdisciplinary, imo. Which also means that our field must bring new research questions to the humanities … If only we had it as easy as Chemistry ;P https://xkcd.com/2552/

@impactology Ooh, that sounds interesting, good luck!!
