Video and 3D post-production folks:

If someone wanted to make or purchase a video workstation for post-production work (video effects in particular, possibly 3D work as part of that general workflow) on Linux, is that still a viable thing at present? It seems like it's iffy, but entirely because of OS and driver support problems.

@etherdiver @ajroach42 @romeorucha I think at some point, I was getting overwhelmed by my feed more than managing it (oops) so unfollowed a bunch of folks, and said something to that effect (as in, informing folks about it), which could've been lost in the mix.

In any case, fixing because as we all know, I'm better now 🤪 😆

I used to think that creative success meant you worked towards a thing, established a certain level of success, and past that, if you're lucky, crossed over into the mainstream and either hopefully stayed there, flamed out, or got big, if not really big.

That's all horseshit. lol

It's not that this doesn't happen -- it can, and it does -- but the thing about working in the arts is that it's way stranger than you could ever possibly imagine.

My first glimpse at this in terms of being "really big" was learning, decades after the fact, about what happened to Les Paul.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

Les Paul is mostly known these days as a jazz guitarist, as well as the inventor of the "Les Paul," a type of guitar.

But not only were him and Mary Ford hugely successful for a time as pop musicians, they hit their full stride right after WWII -- doing a mix of hopped up pop music, experimentalism and sort-of-jazz.

Then?

Rock and roll happened.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

The bottom dropped out of everything.

"Great. Now what do we do."

It's not like they disappeared, they had a recording career until the early 60s, and Les Paul went on to "pioneering" (ugh, that term) eight track tape and a bunch of other things...

then he became more widely known as a jazz guitarist.

@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

You see what I'm saying here?

It's like if popular music tastes in the US went from, say, Taylor Swift (just one example), to...I don't know, free jazz, or at least, say, Laurie Anderson-like spoken musical song-monologues a la "O Superman".

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

Part of the "rules" (William Goldman: "There are no rules.") of the arts and entertainment biz is that anything -- and i mean, anything -- can change overnight, and does often enough to make note of it, and at least, keep that in mind.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

So, yes, there's the "music business," and there's rules or at least standards of practice, very loosely defined, and so on -- but the main rule is "hope you like chaos, lol" and similar aphorisms that happen to be also true.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

Also, you can always just say "fuck the rules, or whatever" and do what you want to.

That's always good.

While I'm thinking about this: I've learned a ton of useful information about working in the arts from listening to, and studying, comics.

Not just because of craft or even stage presence (although definitely that too), but because the best comics tend to be a bit ahead of the curve, even in their own profession.

Liberating Theory -- 1986

https://archive.org/details/liberatingtheory00albe

"Each idealized monist theory targets different "domination relations" as the "motor force of history." Not surprisingly, as they each find a different essential tension, their respective proponents criticize one another harshly.

The idealized marxist looks first to economic and class relations to explain not only economic, but also sexual, racial, political and all other types of domination.

1/n

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

Likewise, the idealized feminist looks primarily to gender, the idealized nationalist to culture, and the idealized anarchist to the state. Of course, only a few activists actually assert that everything, everywhere is always economy-based, state-based, gender-based, or culture-based--and nothing more. These ideal types are caricatures.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

But most adherents of each perspective do claim that their particular concepts of structure and power are at least the central determinants of oppression and social change."

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

This book radicalized my entire view of what it means to be on the left in society.

It's easy to fall into a singular view of the world, when you're on the left. It's not that people feel that nothing else is valid outside of their belief systems, but at times, it becomes difficult to ascertain whatever forms of leeway and tolerance exist, and no one "flavor" or ideology has a corner on becoming overly sectarian or dogmatic in their beliefs.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

"Monism" is basically just another cop in your head, in other words.

Embrace a more pluralist approach, and a world of possibilities opens up.

The problem with federated alternatives to centralized services (and also one of the main problems with centralized services which lead people to look for an alternative) is Discovery.

Etsy and Twitch and YouTube provide an audience, supposedly. With the right pitch (and the right advertising dollars) you can get your own slice of that audience. (For as long as the algorithm graces you, and as long as you're willing to stomach the other things your viewers will be algorithmically suggested.)

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

@ajroach42 There's also something that looks like "Independent creators who try to co-exist on both are...even more stressed, as it turns out."

My advice for young careerists: practice making the sounds which other people interpret as thinking. You can buy yourself a lot of time by making those noises instead of answering questions from your boss.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

@Binder

Corollary: if your boss refuses to accept even seeming compliance in service to top level work parameters, find another job, if at all possible
