If you're a serious hobbyist I strongly recommend Landr as a source for great feedback on your tracks. You can hire a professional for a relatively modest (depending on your budget) amount to give very insightful and actionable feedback on your stuff.

I've used a guy called Franz Matthews on there on every track I've released one I've got a good draft together and the changes suggested have always added a really professional touch.

@s I don't mean to counter your experiences, but my standing rule is "Don't trust any 'professional feedback' service, because they're usually scams or at least way overpriced", tbh

Shakti (John Mcglaughlin's band which last released an album in like 75 or something) recorded a new album last year and did a tiny desk?

@ajroach42 Did not know this. I remember them from back when.

LB:

"While Big Tech sites like Spotify claim they’re “democratizing” culture, they instead demand artists engage in double the labor to make a fraction of what they would have made under the old model. That labor amounts to constant self-promotion in the form of cheap trend-following, ever-changing posting strategies, and the nagging feeling that what you are really doing with your time is marketing, not art."

This is exactly what I keep going on about. smh

I don't think "10,000 hours to get good at something" is a universal rule, but it's a good rule of thumb.

poiseunderchaos,
@poiseunderchaos@sonomu.club avatar

What do I mean by this? It's possible to just take to something, that's all. It doesn't always happen, but it can.

That doesn't mean that you can skip out on the hard parts, though! It's not necessarily an advantage -- if anything, the risk is that you'll get lazy because you're good, faster. So then what?

"My novels, Empathy (1992) and The Mere Future (2009), in particular are not middlebrow literary novels, but rather use associative thinking, collage, wordplay, juxtaposition of materials, and other long-recognized methods of art practice to convey ideas so complex that derivative conventional narrative constructions would not do these ideas justice. In other words, some ideas have to be formally replicated, instead of being described. They have to be evoked."

The only way to address that is to de-platform them, and if needed, de-platform the ones who keep enabling them as well, on "free speech" grounds or whatever convenient cover happens to be around.

In contrast, autonomy is about the right to leave. There's been struggles around this for years on here, but the ability to take the code (or use someone else's modified code) to have more local access, defederation, even an instance that is just one user -- those are all actual things.

Unlike corporate social media, you can just make a space with friends here, and have that be it.

Now, there's limits to that as well -- doing that doesn't mean that people might not be fucked up towards you for doing that, and there's definitely examples of that on here. In a way, everybody who isn't just a user of .social, waiting for the partnership with whatever post-Meta horrors await, is in that category -- but still, as much as some people want this to be a kinder, gentler silo,

it's not designed to be "a twitter alternative" or whatever.

it's designed for federation, quite literally. in other words: autonomy and mutual aid.

I think we're still struggling with autonomy, tbh. White people especially have a hard time with the idea of it -- "Black people have their own community interests that don't center mine? Oh, the horror" -- but that doesn't change how things are designed, either.
