I went out to look at watches, and I saw some beautiful Tissot PRXs. They are pretty but far from perfect. Especially the quartz ones seem hit and miss (miss really) when it comes to hitting the markers.
Then I saw some Citizen Tsuyosas in various colours, which are also very beautiful! I was impressed.
Then I saw the Grand Seiko range next to Rolex and Omega and GOOD GOD! How can humans manufacture something as perfect as a Grand Seiko. 🤯 #horology#watchesofmastodon
@gpowerf Grand Seiko has an incredible history and makes unique watches on par with the greatest no doubt about it: opinionated japanese design that strongly contrasts with what the Swiss brands offer, top-notch finition and a few tricks literally no one else can do. It’s also very easy to be lost in their giant lineup of collections and models 😅
Having a Spring Drive one and a Quartz one in my collection already, it is only natural that my 3rd #GrandSeiko would be a Hi-beats automatic. When I saw the radial snowy dial, the 44GS case and the blue GMT hand, I knew that the SBGJ201 aka “Mt Iwate” was the one. It’s not the first watch that can handle timezones in my collection but definitely the first regular GMT. #watches#watchesofmastodon
I've recently gotten into #watches and #space at the same time. They do tend to be related, but I never expected interest in one to create interest in another.
All that to say, all the cool gears in mechanical watches are awesome. But, I also got a Casio G-SHOCK that syncs with the radio broadcast of the atomic clock every night. Its really fascinating technology, at least to me!
Microsoft really spent $68.7B acquiring Activision only to realize their gaming division is now too big and costly so they’re doing layoffs every quarter 🤦🏾♂️
@carnage4life it’s not a realization, it’s the plan all along. Microsoft spent money to kill competition and acquire their IPs. They couldn’t care less about the people working at the studios.
@carnage4life@frew Microsoft literally said 8 months ago that they were happy with Hi-Fi Rush’s success and planned to invest in the company. It’s not a matter of profit. Their brain-dead corporate speech about IP consolidation is all about not making ENOUGH profit under the silly and unrealistic assumption that everything must be Call of Duty-level of profit.
@frew@carnage4life “it’s also been a tough 8 months” and whose fault is that? Who are the ones in charge and supposedly responsible for it? Why are they not impacted at all? Did you go to the same school of tone-deaf public statements as Mike Ybarra? https://mastodon.online/@ppn/112406490095250937
I just bought my 2nd #GrandSeiko. Will talk about it and explain the choices I made once I actually get my hands on the box. The only thing I will tease is that this reference is very plain and simple, and probably not one I would have considered 3 months ago before I had owned the very fancy SBGA259/Golden Snowflake. #watches#watchesofmastodon
Reference is SBGP005. I was looking for a good everyday watch. I had 3 criteria:
can work both in casual and formal if needed, 44GS case and incredible finish are classy but sunburst dial with no extra pattern is relatively simple for a #GrandSeiko
blue dial, blue was the one glaringly missing color in my collection so far
convenience, date is a must and 9F85 quartz rated at +-10s/year means that I don’t have to babysit it, battery swap after 3 years is trivial #watches#watchesofmastodon
The #GrandSeiko SBGP005 has basically taken the place of both my SBGA259 which I find a bit too fancy for everyday and my #Citizen E650 S086728 which I don’t wear often anymore because it’s too heavy, too big (42.5mm) and a bit too complicated. The SBGP005 is 40.5mm, has one date complication and is steel instead of titanium so it is definitely heavier than SBGA259 but still nowhere near as heavy as the massive Citizen. #watches#watchesofmastodon
@r_df_ng Grand Seiko is normally a bit over-budget for what I was willing to put for an everyday convenient watch. So I was initially considering something like a smaller quartz Citizen or a Longines VHP. But then I got lucky, was offered a very very good deal for this one and went back to the idea of GS.
Comparing the side view of the #GrandSeiko SBGA259 and SBGP005, unsurprisingly the case of the watch with quartz movement is much slimmer than the one with Spring Drive. But due to titanium instead of steel the bigger case is still lighter. #watches#watchesofmastodon
I don’t know how controversial my opinion is but I find the modern #Rolex Air King extremely unappealing. It has lost a lot of the traits from the original looking more like a weird downgraded mix between an Explorer and a Milgauss. And it doesn’t even live up to its name anymore as its design is inspired by a car and has almost nothing to do with airplanes/pilots. #watches#watchesofmastodon
@Ruttalex07 I have seen it IRL and I still disagree that it is a simple dial. It's very busy with a clumsy amount of "5" markers. When you put it side by side with an Explorer that has just 3/6/9, it honestly looks like a messy version of it. Almost nothing in the modern Air-king makes sense. It is not even related to airplane/pilot anymore since it is designed after a car.
@Ruttalex07 In a modern lineup with Oyster perpetual, Datejust, Air-king and Explorer, I would chose any watch except the Air-king. It is literally the only one who has currently zero identity design-wise. I feel like the Air-king has never really managed to find its proper identity. As much as I like vintage Air-king from 50s-70s, it is hard to deny that even then they were very close to late Speedking and Oyster Perpetual. I don't understand what Rolex is trying to achieve at this point.
