Trump coming out for crypto while Biden's SEC tries to regulate it out of existence will be the tipping point in Silicon Valley VCs shedding the pretense of being liberal and going all in on MAGA.

A bunch of them have taken baby steps but now it's on.

Tesla shareholders should rejoice. The Biden administration is planning on increasing tariffs on Chinese EVs from 25% to 100% which is as good as banning them.

Similar tariff hikes are planned for solar panels.

Fining AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile less than $4M each on average for falsely advertising their data plans as unlimited seems like a slap on the wrist.

I’m confident they made way more than that from the consumers they tricked into purchasing those plans.

Maybe they’d have been fined more than that if it was a lawsuit about misleading shareholders instead. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Scammers tried to trick execs at WPP to send them money by pretending to be the CEO on a Microsoft Teams call using voice cloning and deepfakes from public YouTube videos.

We now have to ask coworkers to show us their hands on video calls to prove they aren’t AI. 😫

Apple execs tried ChatGPT last year and came to the conclusion Siri is antiquated.

A functional digital assistant that can actually understand conversations and complete tasks would be a good reason for users to buy Android devices instead of iPhones. So they’ve panicked.

They also plan to tout on-device AI as more private than cloud-based AI. The question is if it will be as useful? 🤔

I continue to be fascinated by the fact that when Jack Dorsey looks back at his time at Twitter, his only regret is that it was technically possible for him to ban the Nazis so people nagged him to do so.

So now his ideal social network is one where the moderators can’t ban Nazis.

Every earnings call, WB’s CEO confirms that the things we thought were bad ideas were actually bad ideas.

A game where the Suicide Squad kill Superman, Batman and the rest of the Justice League is such a terrible. Who wants to play Captain Boomerang killing Batman? Who? 🤷🏾‍♂️

The gaming industry slowdown continues. Roblox stock is down -30% in pre-market trading after missing Q1 expectations ($801M in revenue vs $918M expected) and cutting revenue estimates for the year from $4.28B to $4.1B.

The gaming industry is suffering from a post-COVID & post-ATT hangover. There are too many sources of entertainment competing for people’s attention and acquiring new mobile users is worse now than it was a few years ago thanks to Apple’s ATT.

The streaming wars were a zero interest rate phenomenon as it was unsustainable having so many services chasing after subscribers while losing money.

Paramount is now looking for a buyer. Disney+, Hulu & Max are now a bundle. It’s going to be Netflix and 2-3 bundles at the end.

Microsoft really spent $68.7B acquiring Activision only to realize their gaming division is now too big and costly so they’re doing layoffs every quarter 🤦🏾‍♂️

This feels like the first ad that is a tone deaf miss from Apple. An ad showing beautiful tools of human creativity being crushed to be replaced by the newest and thinnest gadget feels antithetical to Apple.

I’d expect this from an AI company not Apple.

It must be tough to hit financial difficulties because the US government says the products you make are too good to be sold to Chinese companies.

De-globalization is going to hit more and more companies as it spreads from chips to AI.

This is an angle I didn’t expect. Instead of Tesla being investigated for misleading consumers by naming its features AutoPilot and Full Self Driving, it’s being investigated by prosecutors for misleading investors.

That actually has more teeth in America given that while consumer protections are week, the US doesn’t play around when you screw investors. Just ask Elizabeth Holmes or Martin Shkreli.

Last week, a Nigerian PM that I mentor mentioned layoffs happening at Microsoft in Nigeria but I didn’t expect them to shut down the entire development center and lay off everyone.

It’s not surprising given the layoffs across the industry but it is disappointing.

Microsoft shutting down multiple Bethesda game studios including the makers of the critically acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush is depressing on two fronts.

First, having a hit game isn’t enough to survive the gaming apocalypse and secondly it’s now layoff season every quarter in big tech.

It's a real tragedy that founders can now be stained by the fact they used to have an NFT startup (e.g. Rabbit R1 founders) but VCs who funded the biggest scams are still walking around with no repercussions or damage to their reputations.

Imagine being the CEO of an EV company that depends on government subsidies from Democrats for your success.

Then imagine going out of your way to piss off liberals by going full right wing tech bro.

Now liberals don’t like you but at least Republicans will hook you up. Right?

AI voiced audiobooks have been a boon to indie creators by giving them access to the audiobook market without having to paying for studio time for human narrators.

It means there’s now even more content for readers that needs filtering and narrators are losing gigs. This is what #disruption looks like. Two steps forward and one step back.

I recently asked a friend with an EV if range anxiety is still an issue. His response is that solvency anxiety is a bigger issue. He raised Fisker and Lucid as two examples of companies that might expire before your car does.

Tesla now gives similar vibes.

The issue with Tesla is less that the company runs out of money but instead the ownership experience degrades far worse than you signed up for. Concrete examples that owners are already experiencing are resale values, repair costs and insurance prices being worse than expected.

The company disinvesting in its charging network and new cars is a sign things will get worse not better.
