Yeah, I’d say it’s the power for the pump, including the extra power required to push the water through a decent enough filter for human consumption. They might also be using UV-light filtration of some kind in the process that needs it’s own power as well.

Okay, I’ll bite. I think she did her job well here. I don’t think her job should exist. I guarantee, whether intentionally or not, that she has wielded her power to make a minority’s day shittier during her career, when they didn’t deserve it. Giving that sort of power to a person, giving them that control over other people, almost always leads to corruption. A few people shining through is the exception, not the rule. Victoria police ran a scare campaign in the media last year about the decriminalisation of public intoxication. How it would cause an outbreak of other crimes, and make their job harder. But no such thing has happened. Even if you don’t believe the police should stop existing, it’s undeniable that they’ve systematically lobbied for more and more powers, which disproportionately affect minorities and the poor. Reducing those powers and shrinking the force has more benefits than not doing so or allowing their power and sizes to continue to balloon.

Edit: To be clear, the decriminalisation was directly off the back of the Royal Commission into an indigenous woman, Aunty Tanya Day’s death in custody. She was arrested for public intoxication after she fell asleep drunk on a train. Think of all the drunk footy fans you’ve seen snoozing on a train home before.

Downvotes are disabled on my instance and I think it helps a decent amount of what you’re saying. Only seeing how many others agree with someone does still lend a decent amount to the discussion I think. It’s way starker to see someone still on 1 when the person they’re arguing with is on 10 in my opinion.

I saw that article. I could believe that a majority support it, but something feels hinky with their polling to come up with that 80% figure. It just doesn’t line up with my anecdotal experiences at all. Most people I’ve talked to about this (Melbourne) are either ambivalent or against DST. Almost all of the people working in mental health I’ve met are against it due to the increase in suicides. Same with most of the Queensland expats I’ve met, though that might be related to actually experiencing living it for the first time. Obviously all of this is anecdotal, but it just does not seem to compute with that article’s figures of overwhelming support. I should be clear that support for permanent DST was split amongst the people I’ve talked too, but the adjustments have been pretty much universally hated.

For an example same-sex marriage has overwhelming support in Australia these days, 75% as of last year. And I have met way, way more people against DST than against same-sex marriage.

Sorry, you’re right the science isn’t anecdotal, I didn’t mean to imply that. I was referring to the anecdotal nature of my “polling” of people in the mental health field. They all personally detested it because of the wealth of scientific evidence that you mention. The poll (in the article) just doesn’t line up with my experiences in Victoria. I could see there being a majority, as I probably do run more in circles that don’t approve of it. But an overwhelming 89% majority here? 1 in 10 opposing doesn’t seem like even close to accurate data. Unless it just happens that everyone I know is part of a vocal 11% of DST-haters.

While I don’t disagree that MLs online cause harm, it would be remiss of me not to point out that the root of the issue is decades of intergenerational indoctrination during the cold war that anything democratically socialist was directly equivalent to autocratic communism. There is a deep, cultural cognitive dissonance that occurs in the US about things like socialised medicine and welfare that I just don’t think tankies online influence as much as you think they do.

Why? I don’t need to do it that often, and I kind of enjoy the flow. It’s not exactly long or complex either. Not everything needs to be automated, I think all the detritus clogging up the web these days is evidence enough of that. I already use a custom iso with a bunch of preferred packages and things like the docker repo added.

I don’t really see it this way. Fernwood, a women only gym, is allowed to exist. I don’t really see it as problematic for a discriminated class to seek to foster a space free from those who perpetuate that discrimination. Men-only spaces have existed for quite literally most of civilised history. I don’t think it sets a precedent for protected classes to be discriminated against as “art” because men aren’t a class that needs protecting (from discrimination about their status as men). This whole case just feels like a hissy fit.

Note for any other trans women in the audience: Fernwood as a company is trans-inclusive.

While you may agree with this particular case of discrimination it is not a good idea to open an opportunity for more discrimination in the future - keep in mind it may not always be the type you agree with.

I think this sort of slippery slope argument is a cop out. I agree, there are plenty of situations where discrimination based on gender would not provide a substantive benefit to society. For example, a women’s only supermarket would be ridiculous. This conversation, and the article, is specifically discussing the realm of art exhibitions, and a marginalised groups right to have an exhibit be an exclusive place. I am a woman, and you’re right that it does give me a bias here. As an example though, I’m white, and I would be perfectly okay being excluded from an exhibit that was set aside for Indigenous Australians. I think the cultural significance of art can be really important, while also generally not causing a person harm to miss out on.

They also only allow women patrons, so men are not charged for a service that is not equally provided.

In the example I just gave I’d personally be fine paying regardless for say, the admission to a whole gallery with just one exhibit inaccessible to me. I do see how this could be a problem though. Would it be a good enough resolution then, if that was a seperate ticket than the general admission? What if that exhibit ticket was then free though? Free as in, for anyone of that group even without a gallery ticket.

Intel Mac computers run linux great, and Asahi Linux is marching ever closer to full feature parity on Apple Silicon. The boot-loader is only locked on iPhones and iPads, their computers are nothing close to a chromebook in that regard.

And honestly nah, macOS is way less awful than Windows these days. It’s a lot less user hostile and isn’t constantly trying to sell you shit. And you can still install apps from outside the store, so it isn’t the same walled garden as their mobile devices. Windows 10 when it was first released was still better, but Windows 11 and the mess that 10 has become at current version is worse in every way. It just has the momentum of being a monopoly.

Apple didn’t make Logic originally, they bought it. Same with Final Cut. This is also a pretty short-sighted take on the history of Macs and creative apps which actually stretches back to early 90s. Windows was originally pretty terrible with all kinds of multimedia and it wasn’t until XP that they finally really even started trying.

I believe you can use a resin 3D printer to make food safe items, as it doesn’t have the same issue with surface fissures. Is that correct? I’ve been considering one to be able to print food safe items, including for storing medications.

They already beat you to this. Look at the difference between the closest and second closest rungs. One is much squatter than the other. Which is also just shit for sitting, having two different height arm rests sucks if you have chronic pain. Because yeah otherwise you could probably make a decent swag out of it.
