prole,

That’s why we went from an app with incredible HBO shows and movies, to Max which is full of Discovery channel “reality” TV garbage.

prole, (edited )

Still happens.

Animal Well was coded by one guy, and it was ~35mb on release (I think it’s above 100 at this point after a few updates, but still). The game is massive and pretty complex. And it’s the size of an SNES ROM.

Dwarf Fortress has to be one of the most complex simulations ever created, developed by two brothers and given out for free for several decades. The game, prior to adding actual graphics, DF was ~100mb and the Steam version is still remarkably compact.

I am consistently amazed by people’s ingenuity with this stuff.

prole,

This has kind of come around full circle… Video games went from what you described to literally just not letting you start the game until you approved every EULA that popped up before the main menu.

They got us so used to just clicking OK because we knew the only alternative was not playing the game at all.

Now they have several types of EULAs at the start of a game, and usually the "data sharing’ one is separated out and not needed to be approved in order to start the game (probably thanks the GDPR if I had to guess off hand). But people have gotten so conditioned to the idea of “just click OK over and over so I can start playing” that they don’t realize there’s two separate EULAs there, and only one is required to be accepted to play the game.

And I would take it as a bad sign when the people who are supposed to be the most tech savvy in the building can’t be bothered to take 3 seconds to change that.

prole,

Hmm, how indeed. Maybe try some trick like holding the word in front of a mirror and see what happens?

Texas professors want to use abortion ban to punish students for "consensual sexual intercourse" (www.salon.com)

“Along with their anger about abortion, they grouse about not being allowed to punish students “for being homosexual or transgender.” They also argue they should be able to penalize teaching assistants for “cross-dressing,” by which they appear to mean allowing trans women to wear skirts.”

prole,

Or not cutting the hair around your temples, or wearing clothing with mixed fabric or, I dunno, eating shrimp.

prole,

Christians that aren’t sociopaths, who actually read the Bible (aka, actually comprehend it), typically don’t stay Christian very long.

prole,

These people are fascists. They would not be fascists if they ever believed for a moment that they wouldn’t be part of the “in” group.

Of course anyone who knows anything about history knows how foolish this is.

This stuff about the price reductions after 4 years of blatant gouging is really freaking me out

I mean, that’s 4 years of our lives taken! 4 years of opportunities that were more challenging because they wanted a number on a computer to go up! 4 years of feeling worse than necessary about my finances and management of them and general personhood because i felt like i couldn’t afford anything because everything was...

95% of all dollars in existence were “minted” (digitally, ofc) in the last couple of years.

No way this is true. Anyway, the act of printing money isn’t the problem here.

prole, (edited )

95%, 20%… whats a 400%+ difference amongst friends on the internet, right?

Texas Supreme Court rejects challenge to state's abortion law over medical exceptions (apnews.com)

The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a closely watched challenge to the state’s restrictive abortion ban, ruling against a group of women who had serious pregnancy complications and became the first in the U.S. to testify in court about being denied abortions since Roe v. Wade was overturned....

prole,

mean, so long as you define “hating women” to mean “opposing abortion”

I do. Next question.

prole, (edited )

I can only speak for myself, but me getting a Steam Deck was step one in the process where eventually, about a year or so ago, I switched to Linux on my laptop, and I don’t have a single regret.

I will never use Windows again when it’s my choice.

prole,

Again, only one data point but you basically just described me exactly

prole,

Oh, all the time when it involves things that aren’t centered around him. In those cases he will usually take on the opinion of the last person that he spoke to (that knew how to butter him up first)…

prole, (edited )

They could have claimed that a dozen or so years ago, yet for some reason they kept terrorizing Gazans while being almost entirely immune to any type of “conventional” (and proportionate… Which lol because this isn’t a word the Israeli government is familiar with) response. Also even “conventional” is a stretch given the apartheid reality makes it nearly impossible for Palestinians to even formulate a “proper” response.

It’s almost like 10/7 was out of complete desperation for an untenable situation where these people see there friends and family murdered by the IDF for no reason, or have family in The West Bank where settlers from New Jersey who have never been out of the US are literally storming Palestinian villages with AR-15s in the middle of the night and forcing them to leave so they can literally steal their property.

I am by no means justifying the events of 10/7, just like I would never justify the events of 9/11. But I would be ignorant and foolish not to learn anything from the event about how decades of policy like this creates terrorists and they will fight back when you corner them for literal decades.

Anyone old enough to remember 9/11 and didn’t just read Bin Laden’s “manifesto” or whatever you want to call it last year, we remember when it happened and, to many of us it make complete sense. Shit, Obama almost lost in 08 because he was seen with some black preacher once or twice who had a recording of an old sermon where he (correctly) said 9/11 was our “chickens coming home to roost”.

prole,

True, if the Israeli government has shown us anything, all they really want is peace, right? Not the land. Not complete control of the people in an open-air prison. They’ll just stop all that if they, “no longer feel threatened.”

You cannot be this naive.

prole, (edited )

God if that’s all it takes… Stick each of these fuckers in a tiny room with 11 of their peers and FORCE them to listen to nothing but cold hard facts for hours a day, for weeks, and then discuss them in person until they can all unanimously agree on our collective reality…

Maybe it’s doable? God, I hate the idea of “re-education,” it has such an icky, authoritarian connotation. But it’s literally what these people need. Except in this case it isn’t about inundating them with propaganda, it’s literally just reality and irrefutable facts.

prole, (edited )

Also forcing them to communicate with real people in real life makes a HUGE difference. Combine those two things and you have a potentially powerful force of deprogramming.

It’s almost like forcing the Germans to walk through the camps after they were liberated… Except hopefully before it gets to that point.

prole,

If that’s what actually happened, I wonder if those things stick when he re-enters civilian life to go back to having Fox News blaring 24/7.

prole,

Ah yes, totally the views of a neutral, third party company that’s just trying to compete with Twitter.

prole,

Yeah, and I guess the trans people that end up dead in the balance will just be considered sacrifical lambs then?

It’s ok though, we’ll make sure to use the correct pronouns at their wakes.

prole, (edited )

No, they know that Trump supporters are the types of people to actually listen to and heed these calls.

This is stochastic terrorism straight up… Or is just flat out terrorism, they’re not really hiding it. This is the spokesperson of a “social media platform” (lol I know I know) saying this, not just some random casual Fox News watching R voter.

And he knows exactly who he’s talking to. It’s a clear attempt to mobilize.

Goddamn people must really be this stupid. I guess we just need to experience this pain first hand like Germany before we fully grasp what we are allowing to take hold of our government.

But even looking at them these days, it seems like 80-100 years is all it takes for everyone to start forgetting…

Edit: Came back after some thinking and realizing that the communications director for Truth Social probably literally is just some random Fox News watching R. Just not casual I guess.

prole,

It’s kind of wild actually. When Trump talks about this case being “fixed,” and the judge as being “corrupt,” he’s telling us exactly what’s going on in his other trial with Trump appointee and person with no prior trial experience (if I recall correctly) before being appointed to her seat on (looks at notes) huh, the “United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.”

Wait a second…

prole,

Will every reader also know the finer nuances of the 3 downward arrows, one of them referring to Stalin’s authoritarianism?

Yeah it seemed like you were implying (or actually just saying) that one of the arrows refers to Stalin’s authoritarianism. Which is a bad thing, right? Do we agree on that? And I have it as my profile pic… So I dunno how else I was supposed to take your comment?

And to be clear, again, it is not true that one of the arrows refers to Stalin in any way.

prole, (edited )

Bruh, you brought Stalin up?

I’m so confused by what you’re trying to say.
