Mom always used Great-great-great Aunt Becky's 1850's Tulip quilt as holiday decor. I own the finished quilt and another top with the identical pattern. (Rebecka Shaul, 1852, Herkimer County, NY)

Mariner's Compass, a and classic. The key to assembling this veneer was to built it in quadrants, against the inside of a carpenters square.

One of four medallions for the project I'm currently piecing. This is a traditional , made up of 8 diamonds. I used English Paper Piecing, where you print your pattern on freezer paper and iron the template pieces to the back of the fabric. This stabilizes the bias edges of the diamonds and lets you hand-stitch them together with precision.

"Carpenter's Wheel" is a traditional block built on a central "Lemoyne Star" of 8 diamonds. Making designs was much easier in wood than fabric, where all your seams come together at Y-shaped intersections that are very frustrating to sew.

This was made for an Instagram quilt swap in 2021, and it went off to California. In exchange, I got a lovely "Orange Peel" quilt made by someone in Italy - very satisfying. This block is the traditional "Columbia Star", and much of the fabric is "Sturbridge Village" by Judie Rothermel. (I sure wish I'd bought more of that green border!)

Here's the block again, but when it's applied to a keepsake box, you get a 6-point star where the corners meet in 3D, instead of an 8-pointer on the wall art.

If we've offset the geometry correctly to compensate for the kerf width, all the veneer shapes fit together without gaps.
