Why are rail companies so poor at understanding passenger requirements? This four car sprinter has a total bike space for 2 bikes. There are 5 bikes on it. There also aren't enough seats. Lots of people standing. More trains. Better trains.

@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@wmd OV fiets serve a very different niche to those who take their bike on a train...

quixoticgeek,

@wmd quite

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@wmd I do sometimes wonder if the people who run trains have ever actually used a train...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@jon excellent. Am looking forward to it. Just hope I sleep ok in the tent tonight.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@jon all being well I'll be about half hour early. I'm in desperate need of some breakfast. So will have to find something in the station.

So wtf are these hunebedden that I've been talking about all day? Giant's beds. They rock!

Sorry, autocarrot. They are rocks. Specifically they are neolithic tombs that date from the time of the funnel beaker people. There are loads of them across the north of the Netherlands, into Germany, Denmark and into the Baltic nations. Where did the rocks come from? Scandinavia. Brought to the Netherlands by ice in an ice age 150k years ago.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@holly yep! Big soil covered mound with just the top stones poking up. They also used to have bodies and grave goods. But those have been long pillaged.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

The fact these rocks came all the way from Scandinavia, transported here by glacier, highlights how the Netherlands is made up of the moraine of glaciers from iceages.

The same ridge of sand and gravel that gives us the Utrechtse heuvelrug and the Veluwe, also gives us the gravel pits that line the A14 in east Anglia. All of it delivered here by ice.

Hunebedden found: 7
Kilometres cycled: 55km
Am now back at the campsite. Time to have a shower. And put in some dry socks. The rest of me is dry. My feet, less so.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@twobiscuits I'll post photos once I've eaten.

I am very wet. I'm not certain my waterproof jacket is waterproof any more. Had some sand which I had to walk. But else it's been lovely, even with the rain. Have found a cafe and am warming up a little with a drink, and also drying out. There's no massive rush.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@MikeFromLFE mostly I'd like my glasses to stop fogging up...

Somewhat later than planned. I've started cooking dinner.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@haayman no it's definitely dinner. Mince beef and potato hotpot.

Hunebedden found: 4.
Total number of people on this campsite: me
Kilometres ridden: 22

Rain is definitely easing up. Am gonna go in search of WiFi passwords and toilet roll, then head for a bike ride.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

Correction. There is also a caravan which is occupied. Not sure by how many people tho.

Tent is up. Rain has stopped. Sun is out. Just drying out a bit and having some food before I head out for another ride. There's more hunebedden to hunt

Got to the station early enough that I could get the (slower sprinter) 10 mins before my planned train. Which gets me in 7 minutes earlier. But more importantly has level access and a more sensible bike space. The ICM of the Intercity service sucks.

Potatoes taking ages to cook. Very hungry.

@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

Turns out I was hungry enough to eat the full pot. I have a belly full of hot tasty food. Now to wash up, and then crawl into my nice warm sleeping bag

Looks like things have settled down to a constant ~3mm/hr until 1830. i have half hour to go to get to the campsite.

Yesterday I washed my hair before I left. Stuck it in a pong tail, and headed out. Did 55km of cycling, some of it in the rain. Then slept in a tent. Did another 15km this morning. Now sat in the train I'm trying to remove the worst of the knots. It's unsurprisingly rather tangled...

Crawled into my tent. Then realised I've left the chocolate bar I want to eat on my bike. And I need to pee...

The hunebedden are the rocks. Here's the roll. A roll cloud moving across Drenthe.

quixoticgeek, to random
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

Today wasn't all about the hunebedden. It was also about enjoying beautiful countryside. The rain sucked, but what came after was so beautiful. It was worth the wet feet, and the muddy bike, as a price to pay in return for the beautiful performance that followed. Drenthe, you are beautiful.

I'm genuinely surprised how few people there are on this campsite. Sure it's May, and we've not exactly had a warm spring, but still.

When I got to the 5th hunebedden yesterday I found that the lens hood was missing from my camera lens. I know I'd had it at the previous hunebed. So had obviously lost it somewhere between taking the photos there, and where I was. This morning I went back to the last hunebed I was at on the way to the campsite. And found my lens hood sat on the ground where I had packed up my camera. Phew.

Right. Enough procrastinating. There's hunebedden to hunt!
