Storm season is upon us, and with climate change bringing us more severe and more frequent storms. Flooding is happening more often. Everytime there's flooding someone talks about the insanity of building on a flood plane. Usually with a picture of a sign announcing a development of executive homes, sat in a field of water. The thing is. The problem isn't building in flood planes. The problem is building shitty buildings in flood planes. Naturally the Dutch have a thing or tow to say on this 1/n

I saw someone post yesterday about Octopus energy in the UK offering money for people to not use electricity during a specific time window. Said person then went on to talk about hunting down standby devices.

There was a time when devices consumed obscene quantities of power in standby. But as of 2013, new devices sold in the EU must consume no more than 0.5W when in standby mode. So an idling device pulling the max 0.5w would need to be on for over 83 days to use a single kilowatt hour. 1/n

Wow. So fosstodon instance actually enforced an English language only policy. Wtf. They are kicking someone off for using Irish. What bat shit crazy fucked up colonial anglocentric bollocks is that.

Am amazed. That someone would even think about such a policy in the first place. Yikes. That someone else would go so far as to flag posts for it. That's up there with the instances that enforce a single topic. Wtf.

Am really appreciative of the good instance admin of v.st.

Burning man produces 100kt of CO2 emissions. Bug number right?

Except that's across 80k people. So 1.25t per person. That's less than a return NYC - LHR flight. Per person.

Yes that is more than the emissions per person for someone from poorer countries such as the global south. But in the grand scheme of things. 1.25t of emissions per individual is not as high as you'd think. Drive a typical car 35km round trip to work every day, that's about a ton. 1/?

Gender inspecific form of Sir or Ma´am?

As in "you sir are a genius" or "you ma'am are a genius"

What do we use for NB's?

Ok. Fun for you. (I worked out the solution, your challenge is to work out what the cause is).

Machine a is connected to machine b, via a direct ethernet cable. On machine a it's connected to eth5. On b its eth0. A is assigned 192.168.1.1, and b is assigned .2. There is no ping. Communication doesn't seem to work.

Running tcpdump on machine a causes ping to work. But only while tcpdump is running. Tcpdump on b makes no difference.

What's the cause of this ?

Looks like .NL has reached a point where it has so much Solar that on sunny days the price goes negative. But not enough grid scale storage, so the sun goes down and we start burning dinosaur farts again.

@jon If I was to try to get from the Pyrenees, to the Belgian border, by train, with a bike, and an interrail pass, exactly how masochistic is this likely to end up being ? I'm not in a rush. And may ride a few bits?

A friend of mine is a Doctor. On the train this morning on their way to work the call comes out. "Do we have any doctors on board?".

Finally. Friend grabs their bag and makes way through the train. Only to find 14 other doctors had done the same thing...

Guess that route is popular with medical staff on their way to work...

Why is it so hard to find a 600mm X 400mm X 200mm (or near enough) white plastic storage box with no holes in it (i.e. handles). Lots in black. Or clear. But none in white, or a light grey. :(

The North sea is weird.

English: North sea, location relative to England? East.
Dutch: Noordzee, location relative to the Netherlands? West.
Norwegian: Nordsjøen, location relative to Norway? South west.
Danish: Nordsøen, location relative to Denmark? West.
German: Nordsee, location relative to Germany. West.

There is no country that borders the North sea for which the North sea is North of their coast.

Why the fuck is it the North sea? North of what ?!?!?

A semi productive day. Had breakfast in a nice lunchroom. Picked up a few things at some shops, met with a couple of friends for a chat, went to the DIY store to buy a couple more items. Came home. Watched quali. Took a nap. Just woke up. Now pondering food.

Changed the angle on my solar panel and output jumped by over 3 times. Still not getting even half the theoretical max output. But it's a lot better than it was. Have charged a battery for my tools from it. Now charging some usb power banks. Think I need to make a better stand for the panel tho.

Bicycles are incredibly efficient. But velomobiles take it to another level. The rider of this velo just did 400km in 16 hours and 15 minutes. Am impressive feat.

Ok. Unix nerds. Tell me your most obscure, interesting, or downright weird abuse of pipes. Bonus points for using tee and named pipes. Please if possible give the whole command (redact file names if necessary).

I'm teaching some people about what you can do on the UNIX command line and I need more examples.

Am i being dumb, or is there no direct train from Claremont ferrand to Beziers in June? Have had this route recommended by multiple people as very pretty. But can't seem to get any journey planner to give me a time for it.

In a reply today someone threw a statistic at me. My first thought was "that can't be right at all". In the modern world we get a lot of stats thrown at us, and it's a really useful skill to be able to look at a stat, and without much effort work out if it is plausible.

I'm not talking about checking it's accurate. Just plausible. Could it be true? Or is it out by several orders of magnitude?

Let's look at the stat from today and work out if it's at all plausible. 1/n
