I regularly see people giving themselves goals on how many books to read in a given time. Yet never doing the same with other media like movies or music records.

Wonder why that is.

@tauli To me it's about "how many senses does a medium saturate". The more it does the less "challenging" or "stimulating" it feels to me. Reading a book requires way more cognitive work. You need to create the visuals and the audio yourself. Listening to a record takes over the audio part. Movies etc take over pretty much everything. It's something I consume to tune out, rather than actively participating in something. That's my 2 cents.

Woo hoo! Finally heard about the field trip to Höchst for the Stormy Monday jam session...

It would appear 3 of us are going in a no-smoking vehicle. Plenty of room for me and my bass. Since it's only a half hour trip by car, I'm sure I can hold out that long.

Now it's a question of which bass to bring: Long scale? Shorty? Rounds? Flats? 😜 BEAD?

It's blues, so I'm leaning towards flats on a P.

Very pleased with lessons and practice last days. I am focusing on getting more comfy with the upper part of the fretboard, and to get better at improvising within chords and such.

My question to : is there anything that helped you to get fluent improvising with other musicians? Or maybe just practice?

Also, I see that theory can get a bit overwhelming at times. How much theory is "too much theory", in your opinion?

@mewbassprr "Too much theory" is all the theory you don't associate with a certain sound. Theory is just a tool to give meaning to sounds so we can communicate on an intellectual level. Sometimes theory can make you curious: "huh, I heard about this thing called 'melodic minor' I wonder what that sounds like". It's a tool to explain music after the fact.
