I dabble. Mostly in trains - H0 scale and live steam. Sometimes in games. Professionally in tech.

Short question to you people out there - does anyone of you use the DCC Ex command central or do you know someone who does?

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS I am somewhat familiar with it, I use it for decoder programming.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS I'm pretty sure it's supported by RocRail, it was last time I used the program. As far as tinkering goes, it certainly satisfies that itch. Depending on your layout size and whether you need boosters or use feedback, you may find that DCC Ex doesn't have those options.

If you have a Z21 (black), then Arcomora (www.Arcomora.com) is also something worth tinkering with.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS in my early experiments, I was able to use the Arduino digital inputs with DCC++ under RocRail as feedbacks, but I'm not sure where that's at these days. You'd have to tinker with different types of sensor modules to see what works, or home brew something.

How are you controlling your points if I may ask?

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS I meant turnouts or switches - referred to as points where I live.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS I don't think RFID is suitable for model railway detection. There's no or only experimental software support, and the hardware is expensive. Reed switches or infrared sensors are probably the way to go if you're not using current detection.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS IR detection can be realised with something like this: https://circuitdigest.com/microcontroller-projects/interfacing-ir-sensor-module-with-arduino. It integrates emitter and receiver. It should sit under the track, in between sleepers. The idea is that the passing train reflects the infrared light onto the receiver and thus trips the feedback.

I have not tried this myself, but I know there are people who have successfully used this. There are videos on YouTube about it too.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS Oh, and I'm also still in the early stages of the hobby 😁 By no means an expert and still have a lot to learn. But it's always good to exchange information and ideas.

rainynight65,

@Wintermute_BBS haha, then you have more experience than me. I had a short stint with TT in the early 90s, and then got back to it 5 years ago with H0.

If you're interested, this blog post shows how I'm using the DCC Ex. Not nearly as sophisticated as what you're planning, but it's something 😁 https://makingtracks.ah-web.org/2022/11/08/building-a-programming-box-part-2/

Mathematician, computer scientist, and WWII code breaker Alan Turing, who established the theoretical foundation for just about every modern computing device, was born in 1912. His work helped make it possible for you to read this.

The British government prosecuted him for being gay, a monstrous act that eventually led to Turing’s death by suicide. Then they waited over 60 years before issuing a pardon.

rainynight65,

@mcnees I am still incensed about the fact that he was merely pardoned, not exonerated.

The 'Honest Government Ads' by thejuicemedia are generally on point, and painfully true while also being hilarious.

This latest instalment is no different, and yet it somehow feels different. Darker, angrier, more... just more.

Hey @darmato , what are your views on tipping? Restaurants in Seattle (and I'm sure other cities) are doing "no tipping" where they add 20% to you bill. I have always hated tipping and this seem worse. I've stopped going to these restaurants, but it's getting harder to avoid them. Just raise your prices by 20% and be done with it. But people are stupid and I understand why that doesn't work.

Being in Iceland where there no tipping has been a huge eye opener.

rainynight65,

@grumpygamer @darmato Tipping as practiced in the US is very confusing for visitors. When I went to Boston on a business trip a few years ago, I couldn't make heads or tails of it, even though I researched it and asked for guidance. Especially the scenario of 'how to tip the hotel restaurant staff when the meal is billed to my room' flummoxed the crap out of me, and I'm sad to say I probably didn't do it right.
