Ugh. I’m really tired of Apple’s keynotes nowadays. They feel so overproduced and heavy with marketing fluff. Just get on with it, already.

Really?

Sorry, but no.

RockyC,

@cdfinder Agreed. While the thinness is indeed marvelous mechanical engineering, that’s not going to make me want to upgrade. Odd that they led with that instead of their new M4.

Yesterday I installed Debian with Mate in a virtualbox just because I was bored. It felt great.

I am probably just old and stuck to ancient visual ui paradigms but and are way better looking and more comfortable to use than Gnome or KDE.

Gnome feels unfinished. Feels like trying to use a computer with a tablet interface. Feels like I am being treated as dumb. (1/2)

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@caiocgo I feel you on Cinnamon. It’s not flashy and doesn’t overwhelm you with options. It’s simple, easy to use, and predictable.

Now that I’ve gotten deeper into Linux and understand things a lot better, I’ve switched to KDE for its deeper customization options, but I still recommend for ANYONE who just wants OOTB simplicity and ease of use.

GNOME is GNOME, and lots of people like it, but it’s not for me anymore. Not sure where they are going withth their desktop.

Room temperature take: Episode 1 is still not a very good movie.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@oomoepoo It’s not. I really wish that George was able to get Irvin Kershner or someone more competent than himself to direct the movie. All of the characters were poorly developed, and I didn’t CARE about any of them. George spent too much time on podracing and space battles and not enough time on the story and characters. That whole story could have been rolled into the first 30 minutes of Episode Two.

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@oomoepoo It doesn’t advance the story at all. It serves no purpose to the plot other than to show that Anakin has good reflexes and is tenacious.

Hey Linux peeps, I have a tech support question:

I tried installing the proprietary Nvidia driver on this old MacBook that I am installing Ultramarine Linux (Fedora) on, but it nosedived on a reboot, so I removed it, but now SDDM is showing distorted image on a reboot. Once the desktop loads, everything is normal, but SDDM does this.

Any thoughts on how to fix SDDM?

They just came today & don’t even have OSes yet, but I have already named these two “Chopper” and “Mixer” while it’s still May the 4th. They are for digital signage at a local restaurant, where Boil already serves.

They join Appo, Cody, Echo, Fives, Fox, Hardcase, Hevy, Hunter, Jesse, Omega, Rex, Tech, and Wolffe in my “regiment” of computers that I manage, all named after clones from Clone Wars.

And this is apparently my 5,000th post on Mastodon!

I could sit here and throw out superlatives, but they can’t accurately describe what I just experienced. The absolute quality and attention to detail paid to EVERYTHING is just incredible.

Bravo to EVERYONE involved in the project. Y’all are just some amazingly talented people.

So Google Fiber has finally made its way to my neighborhood, and while I was hopeful that competition to AT&T would bring prices down, I suspect that the $70/month price floor of Google Fiber will only encourage AT&T to RAISE prices to match.

AT&T’s cheapest plan is $55/month for 500Mbps service with a $10/month discount if you let them suck money directly from your bank account every month, something that MANY folks who live paycheck to paycheck can’t afford.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/fcc-makes-last-plea-to-congress-as-broadband-discount-program-runs-out-of-cash/

RockyC,
@RockyC@fosstodon.org avatar

@cdp1337 You are correct. The $45 fee is for auto-pay, but AT&T boosted the speed to 500Mbps. It’s nice, but I’d rather a lower price tier for people on the struggle bus.

I understand that networks and equipment are expensive and require maintenance, and that the value proposition is WAY better than it used to be, but the price floor is still too high for many people.
