    @schwa I didn’t think I was a churro person. Then I had a fresh-baked churro, somehow both soft and crispy, with bits of baked apple among the sugar and such. I’m a churro person now.

    I've been trying to think of every mixed RTL/LTR edge case I can, and finally feeling good about it

    if you like to write in both directions within the same note, 1.6 will provide the smoothest experience I have seen — will be in the next beta soon

    @kepano incredible. As someone who regularly has to mix English and Farsi, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see writing programs take this need seriously. 🙏

    @schwa that’s really lovely.

    @schwa are those 2×4s and 2×3s? Or… 1×4s and 1×2s? Or… what?

    @schwa Oof. Do I know the pain of uncooperative lengths.

    Looks like a great design.

    @schwa My entire approach to spilled/dripped wood glue changed upon watching my brother-in-law, a professional woodworker, operate.

    Me: Frantically wipes up beads and drops of wood glue the moment they appear, smearing and making a sticky filmy mess.

    Him: Leaves them alone. Lets them try. Effortlessly chips them off after they’ve dried. 🤯

    reefdog,
    @reefdog@mastodon.social avatar

    @schwa …though I’m not sure how that helps with glue on skin. Probably not at all.

    @schwa Huh. Haven't seen the show yet, but read the first book a while back and it certainly wasn't stupid. Had some truly fascinating ideas. It was, however, such dry reading that I didn't find continuing pleasant.

    Apparently books two and three pick up, and it's also more captivating the more you know (or want to learn) about recent Chinese history.

    My crowd (some having read the books, some not) has been pretty bullish on the show, so I was looking forward to it. YMMV.

    I think one of my least-favorite recurrent post genres is, “you’re bad or stupid if you live in a place I hate”.

    reefdog,
    @reefdog@mastodon.social avatar

    @MattHodges I had a friendship fracture over incorrigible victim-blaming after the Feb 2021 Texas snowpocalypse / grid failure. The most bad-faith incredulity about why we couldn’t handle sustained temperatures common in the north, premised on political distaste for the state. This by a very paper-intelligent person. 😕

    reefdog,
    @reefdog@mastodon.social avatar

    @MattHodges (of course, there were political and policy impacts on the grid failure. this was not that. this was “lol it’s barely below zero, does nobody there have a coat?” sort of grave-dancing. “infrastructure exists to mitigate this, haven’t you heard?” Etc.)

    @schwa Not that we should take moral cues from action films, but I'm having trouble thinking of a single one where a baddy takes a hostage as a human shield and the hero shoots the hostage to get to the baddy, and I'm also having trouble imagining the audience saying "well yes of course, what other option existed”

    I didn't appreciate that zeppelins carried passengers within their envelope—I figured everybody went in the gondola, and thought they just couldn’t carry many people. But, no, the gondola was just for the pilot. This setup reduced drag and could carry nearly 100 people at about 80 mph.

    Bring back airships! They're as fast as U.S. trains, but don't require tracks, and are really efficient means of travel.

    reefdog,
    @reefdog@mastodon.social avatar

    @waldoj I would really like to know if they could replace some amount of long-haul trucking.

    Do you use SVG to create favicons for your websites or web apps?

    Got links to big sites that use SVG favicons? Reply with examples!

    reefdog,
    @reefdog@mastodon.social avatar

    @jensimmons For https://pilot.philanthropydatacommons.org/, not only did we use an SVG favicon, we used @argyleink's "adaptive favicon” technique¹ to ensure the icon was legible in light and dark themes! See the source here: https://github.com/PhilanthropyDataCommons/data-viewer/blob/main/public/icon.svg?short_path=133f5fe

    @cloudcannon Just a heads up: not having a link to your website in your Mastodon profile meant people — like me, just now! — who discover you via via Mastodon have to pop over to a browser, search for you, and hope they land in the right spot.

    Considering I was very interested in learning about your service, that's not a great speed bump!

    Feels like there are a lot of things going unsaid in the Gatsby.js community right now 😬
