Just saw this on eBay.

The pristine Commodore 116 expanded to 64k is one thing... but an AMSTRAD TV - in Canada?!?

Sadly the TV doesn't appear to be on the seller's listing or on any separate sale... I'd have seriously considered that more than the computer! πŸ˜‚

@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Here it is again. If the seller happens to be following on here, please give details - I've never seen one of these things before!

Amazing! 's has just been updated to fix the slowdown for the A1200:

https://whdload.de/mantis/view.php?id=4981

I've tested the slave attached and it works for the 1200, not tried the 4000 yet.

Best thing is, I used to work with "DJ Mike" - nice to see an ex-colleague of mine still helping to keep the alive! 😎

@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

And it works on the A4000 with an 060 too. Well done to my ol' desk sharing chap πŸ˜„

And now, the moment that nobody has been waiting for...

Colin The Cleaner - TURBO! 100% Assembly Edition!

https://youtu.be/CZhntG_ZUHQ

This is a manual transcode I've been doing, just for the fun of doing Z80 coding again πŸ˜„

All the gameplay is in place, the 15 levels can all be completed.

Still missing some presentational parts, the "UI" for defining keys, etc.

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

All the game's original algorithms are intact (short of any bugs I might have introduced) - which is incidentally why the ladder disappears at one point, it does that in the original release. All fixes I added to the BASIC version included.

I might add some enhancements, like being able to redo a level when stuck (at the cost of a life), etc. But it's all a 1-for-1 reimplementation so far.

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

My assembly version of Colin The Cleaner is now available to try out on itch:

https://retrotechtive.itch.io/colin-the-cleaner-turbo-edition

I consider it BETA quality. Go careful near those platform edges! (It's a bit quicker than the original πŸ˜„ )

On the , "RANDOMIZE USR nn" is the usual way to launch machine code when you don't require any parameters or return values.

But why did they use RANDOMIZE, and not GO TO or GO SUB?

Always seemed a bit of an odd choice - anyone know the history of this? πŸ€”

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

@peter That's definitely the case for return values, but why specifically did they use the RANDOMIZE keyword for this? It seems such an odd choice! Was it their way of saying "throw the result to the winds!"? πŸ˜„

I've been gut-punched by the demise of the . It was the first processor I coded directly on, and was the CPU in my first ever owned computer. I'm actually writing code on it right now, and it really does feel like losing a part of my personal timeline.

Goodbye old friend, your absence will be felt.

Just played Dune 2 on the for the first time.

Second mission, and my base was overwhelmed by seemingly expertly coordinated multiple squads of three, while I was desperately clicking on one guy at a time. Also, my troops just stand about next to the warzone, whistling tunes and doing nowt without my intervention. "This Guard button does nooothing."

I can see why this was influential, but really the controls make it totally frustrating IMO. Gimme lasso selection for a start! 😭

@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

I can make vehicles follow my spice harvester, but seemingly nothing else. Bug or feature? Is there a secret squad keyboard shortcut I know nothing about, like C&C for example? Yelp!

I know I really should prefer ARM given that it was designed by My People, but I just can't help it:
My favorite processor is 32bit x86

Great video from Userlandia, about a visit to the UK with tours of some of the best retro machine exhibitions:

Do any fans know why games sometimes run oddly slow on an Amiga 4000 with an 060 in it? BFG9060 with fast RAM too.

I've tried disabling caches, doesn't seem to make any difference.

Wiz Quest for the Magic Lantern and Magicland Dizzy both do this - if I boot from the disk instead of using Workbench, they work fine.

@glc thanks, I didn't know there was a bug reporter on their site - although given the inactivity on this particular issue perhaps it's not always that valuable.πŸ˜‚ At least the issue is not unique to my setup though.

I totally forgot I had this. With the sheer length of time between the Kickstarter and its final arrival, this package got packed away and overlooked. Until now.

Very nicely done, just need me to put the SD card in there with the games on it.

Incredible progress on the version of arcade:

I can't wait to see what techniques he used to achieve this.

Well, I've got the fire burning, the water flowing, the pump going... and yet the portal does not appear.

I solved this easily enough on my original '90s playthrough... So what am I missing? πŸ€”

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Not that I'm particularly looking forward to meeting Dragoth. That has to be one of the most time-consuming and repetitive boss fights of all time... (Also, all these minions that keep appearing are getting a little irksome too...)

But I'm gonna do it dagnammit!!

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Aside from that though, the game's been a lot of fun. Quite a bit I didn't remember at all! I wish there was a Dungeon Master III on the horizon, with the grid step mechanic intact and the unique atmosphere these games have. I still have so much love for these games 😍

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

@davespice Yep those games are very good, finished them both - they have their own atmosphere and charm for sure, but I still miss that certain something from DM that only it did.

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

@davespice Not heard of that, I suppose I'll now need to get myself a Palm Pilot πŸ˜‰

New arrival! 😍

Not tested yet, though it is claimed it works. Still likely to ned a recap in any case, and definitely a clean.
