i'm at a talk about post referendum australia by cherie sibosado

cherie was a kimberley delegate signatory of the uluru statement from the heart

some signatories have since died and didn't see the referendum, perhaps a blessing

the referendum here in broome was...hard. the kimberley has 40% indigenous population, cf australia's 3% overall.

in WA, the political warfare for the no vote came in the wake of a few big political things, indigenousleaders exhausted from a slew of recent events

campaigning in derby on voting day, cherie called it by 10am: this town is going to be a no. derby is the town down the road, the previous regional centre. a white woman felt compelled to stand over cherie and her husband to tell them as a 6th gen australian, she's voting no

on monday cherie organised a healing and grieving gathering in broome. if we get 30, she thought, that will be awesome. over 100 showed.

cherie is making an excellent point: more recent immigrant and immigrant-descendant settler australians were and are treating aboriginal australians as less deserving than themselves. 'i started with nothing and worked up to where i am' is a common refrain. which is frankly bizarre.

south australia has put in place a state-level indigenous voice to parliament https://www.savoiceelection.sa.gov.au/

the acknowledgement of country in australia is a beautiful example of a microaggression used for good.

most settler australians rarely have to think about indigenous australians. except now they do. it's exposure therapy.

i don't think the voice referendum would have even made it as far as it had, without the years of the rest of us being forced to consider that aboriginal australians exist, several times a week.

Okay, so of course there's someone in my mentions today with the tired: "You don't ever have to respond to trolls! Just mute or block them!"

We don't owe him examples of course, but I know I'm not alone when I say those options are not always sufficient.

So if you're willing, give me an example of a situation in which blocking or muting was not enough of a response?

@samfloreani of digital rights watch telling horrifying stories of private data breaches, overreach, misuse

"also here's some info about me, that's my cat"

sauramaia,
@sauramaia@aus.social avatar

@samfloreani it's not very sexy but this is what's effective - policy reforms currently in train:

  • update the definition of 'personal information'

  • remove political party and small business exemptions

  • create a digital right of action and statutory tort for serious invasion of privacy

  • fair and reasonable test to put the onus of responsibility onto organisations

...followed by a bunch of recent political history of digital controls

private and public surveillance and deeply intertwined

sauramaia,
@sauramaia@aus.social avatar

@samfloreani marginalised communities like queers and sex workers disproportionately affected by data misuse in the hands of governments and corporations? well that's never happened before

political activism is sorely lacking technical know how!

today: community garden work at a nearby indigenous community

the broome growers and food security group come out to bidyadanga early last year and helped put in a community garden, attached to the women's and arts centres. it's looking great!

sign saying: free washers and dryers for you to use and space to yarn monday to thursday 8am - 2pm last wash at 1pm
