I once read an excellent article or blog post or something about the different temperament of people who prefer to care and maintain things, from those who like to build new things from scratch.

But try as I might, I am unable to find it again. For some reason, I associate something about a squirrel with this and maybe @chx shared it somewhere?

There was a pile of stuffed toys covered in dust, and just taking up space in our spare room.

I was considering putting them in the bin. Instead, I took them to the local laundromat, and chucked 'em in a washing machine. I just went to pick them up.

As I was walking across the street carrying my laundry basket filled with fluffy owls and tigers, I was spotted by three young girls.

Their eyes grew wide, they gasped, and ooohed and aahed.

After I got safely to the other side of the street, I stopped and asked them, "Do you want to say hello? They gathered around, astounded.

"Who do they belong to?" one of them enquired.

"They're mine. They were just sitting in a corner covered in dust, so I decided to come here and wash them." I replied.

They all just looked at me for a bit. And back at the toys, then back at me.

Then another just blurted out "Can we have them?"

How could I possibly say no?

So the polyester menagerie have now been re-homed, not binned.

Good outcome I'd say.

And I'm still grinning from ear to ear.

One of the hardest and most valuable things you can do as a company is the following:

  1. Have a fully up to date org chart
  2. Have a diagram that is not the org chart that accurately reflects how work flows through the company
  3. Have an up to date and accurate diagram and explanation of what the company does and how it does it (architecture, revenue funnels, business value streams, code-bases)

Scaling decision making is impossible without a shared context to build alignment off of.
