There it is...the dark pattern at work already....yep. this Fediverse integration is losing me🤦‍♂️this is how you lose trust guys....this is how you get blocked by 80% of Fedi, even if you have good intentions because this is shady as hell...please fix this before it gets any worse. You're killing the feature before it launches.🤬

Well a few things 🙂 A dark pattern would be if we didn't keep explaining what happens to people's data when they federate and their data is shared across the internet where we can't promise deletion, retention, usage, etc.

We're committed to making this very transparent with users and our research shows that most people have very little understanding that if their posts end up on another server, they could be reposted or modified and they could suffer from harassment without the level of control we promise to people on Threads.

Thanks, @darnell. We did discuss a quiz actually (cc: @pcottle who had this idea) but it's not clear how that would work exactly. We'll mull this over a bit and see if there's any give there as it ties in with certain privacy obligations we have.

So, @mosseri @pcottle, I have a Fediverse question. I have my own instance that has already been reviewed and approved for federation (https://social.beaware.live) but, I am coming to realize that Mastodon moderation features aren't up to my standard so I'm thinking about migrating to Sharkey, possibly on a different domain. My question is, if I migrate and make a new instance with Sharkey, is there something I have to do to get re-reviewed and approved again for federation?

Hey @beaware.live, we don't have an allowlist, just a blocklist, so there's nothing special you need to do here for a new instance 🙂

Turning 30 is so bizarre to me because I never expected to be around for this long. I treated everything I do as “my last fun thing to do before I say goodbye to the world” (including the reverse engineering stuff) so I never thought about anything long term

it's official, threads is entering the fediverse! we still have a long way to go, but this is our first major step towards the interoperability commitments we made at launch.

if you enabled federation, you will also see your replies to this post in the fediverse. try it out! to find the setting, go to Profile > Account settings > Fediverse sharing to opt-in
