Lots of problems that used to exist in this area no longer do.
Used to be that the de facto standard office format was doc/xls/ppt, now both MS Office and LibreOffice support both ODF and OOXML both of which are open standards.
Used to be that internal software was mostly written for the Windows API, now it is mostly written for web browsers (between which there are no longer any significant differences in terms of standards compatibility).
The world really is slowly getting better. I would like to help accelerate this, but don’t really have any ideas where to start.
Of course they are not equally good, no question about it. They are still both (technically) open standards and the main point is that they are both supported by both pieces of software, i.e. the practical difference between them is mainly in the UI, you don’t need to get the other one just to read files created by one of them.
I didn’t think I needed “protection” from anything on the Internet at all when I was a minor.
My stance has not changed merely because I am no longer personally affected. I still think that it is completely stupid to want to keep any information at all from young people in the first place.
I’m curious how software can be created and evolve over time. I’m afraid that at some point, we’ll realize there are issues with the software we’re using that can only be remedied by massive changes or a complete rewrite....
That was well below 18 for most of the time I have used the Internet. People born on that day were toddlers when I started to seriously use the Internet.
I could nowadays enter my real DOB and get through all checks but I usually still pick something in the 1970s or 1980s.
Power to young people. Politicians who propose things like this, may you lose all elections.
If you are a teenager, I am so sorry for my fellow adults who think we have any business deciding how you guys live your lives. I assure you we are not all like this.
My original plans were to travel to Niagara Falls. That seemed like the coolest place there would be totality at.
I am so glad I (due to circumstances I neither thought nor hoped would happen) am typing this message from Mexico City Airport instead while waiting for boarding to start for my flight back to Europe. It was perfectly sunny where I watched it.
The seats are assigned. People have been standing in line for 15 minutes now. Why on earth would anyone want to stand there, when they could just sit and wait until the line clears?...
Yup. White person from Austria here and while my life is far from perfect, I like having 5 weeks of paid vacation, free healthcare and education, not relying on cars, and many other things I wouldn’t have anymore if I migrated to the US. Maybe Trump should run on a platform of implementing those things in the US.
2004: The Internet is going to lead us into a utopian future of free communication where we exchange ideas with each other without corporate media being gatekeepers telling us what to read, write and think!
2024: Hi, I’m Meta and everyone gets their information from my platforms and I can decide what ideas to allow there. What do you mean we weren’t supposed to have that anymore by now, whoever told you that kind of nonsense.
I am too young to remember that. Of course browsers are now free (at least as in beer, many also as in speech) again and that is a good thing. In my childhood, computers were pretty much synonymous with Windows and the web was mostly unusable without Flash Player and it’s a good thing that that has changed. Still, we don’t live in the utopian society I imagined the Internet would lead to.

I don’t think this is an accurate description of the debate.
My understanding of the “TERF” position is that they say that if it is excessively easy to declare oneself as trans, this can be misused by men wanting to get access to spaces reserved for women. Whether one agrees with that point or not, I do not think it is completely illegitimate.
I usually don’t say anything about this topic at all on the Internet and I am right now reminded of why. I am already starting to regret stating even my relative neutrality on it.
