people who pop on social media to act super cavalier about nuclear waste always give me pause. the track record speaks for itself — we don’t live in a hypothetical society, we live in a world that can’t even produce frying pans without killing bystanders, natural disasters are not predictable, and advanced civ is itself in jeopardy.

fine to debate the finer points and possibilities of nuclear but the weird guy condescending attitude that its dumb or wrong to be cautious has got to go

The word "pseduoscientific" isn't as bad as it sounds if you decenter science as a place of truth (or if you also understand science to be a mutable and adapting means of discovery).

Something incapable with the scientific method isn't "false" or "not true".

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@jalcine a great deal of current medical science is pseudoscience imo because capital has decided which studies get done and why so many times that you can’t separate out profit motives from standards of care etc

Interesting article. though McDowell's “The sun is a powerful enemy” is a strange way to express our predicament.

human systems may be both dependent on—and vulnerable to— all that the sun has to give...

but the real adversaries are right here - extractive industrialisation & agriculture, cutting down the forests, burning all the fossil fuel...

@kategenevieve I agree. And lol this guy

I'm headed to Homer for the this weekend. Will anyone else from here be there? (the conference, specifically; I'll honk and wave at Homer Mastodon, generally, but will be busy and sleepy I think)

reply guying is when you don’t take the time to sit with a stranger’s ideas long enough to understand them and offer respectful counterpoints or ideas. Instead you assume they must be dangerously incorrect and you must correct them. Ironically in regard to this thread, reply guys are often older white men who haven’t examined their own cult indoctrinations. they aren’t used to being confronted about it since our entire society is built around not hurting their feelings https://zirk.us/@McPatrick/112451962450329227

I used to think ignorance drove injustice but now I think it’s denial — the human capacity to create and believe in stories collectively is our greatest blessing and deepest curse

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@Ponygirl yeah, and what we think we do know

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

we tend to sideline actual cults and death cults from the mainstream of modern society but maybe they are its purest form. maybe cults aren’t abnormal for humans, but in fact are the norm. maybe there are precious few of us who aren’t wrapped up in one or more ourselves

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

“why can’t they see that cult leader is an abusive fraud!” uh karen why can’t you see capitalist & gendered white supremacy is keeping you married to an asshole etc etc

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@Wen @paninid contempt is just learned from stories told to us and that we tell, the primary emotion is insecurity right

seachanger, (edited )
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

I was raised as a white girl by a single working mom in the US in the 1980-90s, which means I was indoctrinated into the cult of never fucking pretty/worthy enough because we have things to sell you that you cannot afford; the cult of your value is determined by white men; the cult of tv can replace community; the cult of whiteness doesn’t exist; the cult of your wild intricacies as a complex human being are less important than your appearance and future marriage and children

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

I mean it’s right there in the word culture right! we just never think cult behavior applies to our own selves! but what if that is legit what defines us — our ability to believe the mythology and stories all around us as objective truth/reality, and to do so unconsciously that we are always confused as to how others could be so “ignorant”

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@McPatrick that’s neither what I said nor a respectful manner of replying, muting thanks

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@niboe good questions I think most of us wrestle with right? forming community with people who have shared values is pretty important, sometimes easier said than done

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@plantarum and it seems like the more threatened we feel (ie autonomic nervous system engaged) the harder it is to be flexible with our beliefs. which to me basically explain fascism — terrified people hardened around a fearful worldview

I feel like Joseph should be a little more concerned. Celebrities from Cardi B to Macklemore are publicly criticizing his policies with the latter putting out a wildly popular Hind's Hall with the lyrics "The blood is on your hands, Biden, we can see it all. And fuck no, I'm not votin' for you in the fall"
