It’s well past time to move your service’s status messaging off of Twitter and onto its own infrastructure.

Post to Twitter, too, if you must, but it’s no longer tenable for that platform to be your main outlet.

(My email service is currently having a rough day…)

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

Also, I can’t currently log in to anything that forces email as a second (or even primary) factor for authentication (I would nearly never choose email if given the choice), because I dare to use something that’s not Google or Microsoft to host my mail.

This is also trash; please stop.

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

I don’t want to have to reevaluate my mail provider, but this kind of thing… ugh…

"thanks for reaching out. We will provide periodic updates regarding this service degradation here on Twitter. If you’d prefer, you can also file a ticket with our support team and we can update you once it’s been resolved.”

Turdsite link.

What is the oldest thing you own?

sean, (edited )
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@benjedwards this is a bottle of Bass King’s Ale from 1902. I’ve tasted another bottle from this same batch, but this one is mine.

More info: http://www.mpeterson.co.uk/kings.htm

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@benjedwards It was a very small sample; we split the bottle with probably 50 people. It was leather and tobacco, molasses and treacle, caramel and sherry. Surprisingly interesting and wasn't nearly as "off" as I imagined it would be.

It feels like we—as a society—should do a better job of I before diving too much deeper into AI.

We do a real dumb thing with in . Most generic pizza places here put the pepperoni (which is unusually large diameter discs) between the sauce and the cheese.

Not only does this totally miss the opportunity of making your pepperoni extra delicious when it crisps up in the oven heat, but it creates an entirely stupid layer with nearly zero shear strength so all of your toppings slide off each time you pick up a hot slice.

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@kboyd definitely avoiding the generic slippery carpet of “pepperoni” is a good strategy.

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@iuculano Yeah; sorry for overly-grumpy reply. Deleting.

I have no idea what kind of traction it will get, but as a person who uses both and regularly, sounds pretty great.

I can’t help but notice that the core idea of “allow mixing high-performance compiled code with easy-to-read-and-maintain logic/glue code” is close to how @rasmus describes early (where he expected the heavy lifting to happen in compiled space, but wanted to do the “easier” parts in a friendlier dialect/environment).

I think I have this figured out, but… what do you think this means?
This is on instructions for the wall rail that holds IKEA cabinets. (We get the American version here, so it’s inches… but how many?)

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@grmpyprogrammer I thought so too. But why 6/8 instead of 3/4? Maybe because someone bolted on the imperial measurements? Maybe.

But then below that (on the same page) there’s this. Does this change your mind?

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@grmpyprogrammer You are travelling along the same path I took. (-;

When in doubt: consult upstream, right? So I looked up the European instructions… except this model doesn’t exist in the market I chose (ch/en came up pretty easily, so I went with that).

Guessed around how to find something similar and behold this looks the same even though it’s for a differently-named product, and… 2cm it is. So yes, it must actually be 0.75”.

Cursed indeed.

Don’t be this developer:

[utility-machine:~] # toolname help
Usage: toolname [OPTIONS] COMMAND [ARGS]...
Try ‘toolname -h' for help.

Error: No such command 'help'.
sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@GuillaumeRossolini The rest of the arguments for this tool are positional like that. Someone could have implemented help in less time than it took me to be annoyed by its absence.

Does anyone collect dust? I mean literally, a dust collection

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@benjedwards there’s a quirky independently-run museum on a farm in the northeast kingdom of Vermont called “The Museum of Everyday Life” where they had an exhibit on dust, years ago. There are still some items in their permanent collection. People sent in all kinds of specimens from their own collections. Everything from moon dust to dust from the top of a ceiling fan in a restaurant.

A key mechanic in factory type games is all about evolving the tech tree enough to make the game less annoying.

“If I suffer through the next 4 hours of tediously moving inventory across the map, I’ll earn a wheelbarrow with 4 extra inventory slots!”

I mean, they can still be fun and all, but “make the game less boring” as an objective makes it hard to get into new plays.

Anyone have any info on how they make the music sound so good in ? (The selections are nostalgically delicious, but there’s also some sort of remastering magic going on. And I’d love to read about it.)

I have been resisting the urge to post this since seeing it yesterday.

Going to leave this here without further comment.

The accounting firm I use is called “AF Accounting” (after the initials of the founder).

I feel like they really missed the opportunity of appealing to younger generations by not calling themselves “Accounting AF”.

I will admit there was a time when I would’ve been “what’s the big deal about not having moderation tools.” Then I started to catch glimpses of what happened to friends of mine online. I feel fucking stupid for not understanding.

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@grmpyprogrammer There’s the naïvety of “we shouldn’t need this; we should be better than this.” Sadly, we do and we’re not. Plenty of feeling stupid to go around about those kinds of thoughts from the past.

In 2023, “Fusion 360 is supported on Apple M1 and M2 System Architecture (including Pro and Max) running Rosetta 2” is a great unintentional nudge to try out other software.

Are we calling that “Pulling a Loom” or “Doing ChatGPT style sessions” now? I’ve lost track.

Ice/slippery levels in platforming games isn’t a good trope.

sean,
@sean@scoat.es avatar

@afilina Sure; always exceptions. As a trope, though (where it's in far too many places because "turn down the friction variable" is an easy modification) it's a boring one.
